VANDSLS TONIGHT

I must admit, I have not seen much of Idaho. They are near the top of the BSC so they aren't too shabby. We have to play better defence tonight. Thursday I saw glimpses. We got a few TOs when we needed them but holy cow our shooting and rebounding has to be better tonight.
EWU didn't crash the O boards all that much either. Maybe it's me. Has the game changed so much that everyone throws up a shot then runs backwards if it doesn't go in? I saw several opportunities for easy putbacks if only one person would follow the shot into that soft rebound zone in the paint. I saw Lillard get a lot of points from there back in the Dame days. At 6'1" he got a lot of rebounds. And who can forget those thunderous point guard jams? Anyway, thoughts in how to get past UI tonight?

You can blame that "not following your shot" thing on statistical analysis. Teams that give up more fast break points lose. It's that simple. PSU has gone the exact opposite way. They dare you to try to run on them by crashing the O boards and pressing. It was successful for them early in the season. It's a hit and miss sort of thing. The odds are against them. I'm not sure what the happy medium is. It might be when you have a guy like Bolomboy, who was a one man O board machine. However, that is not easy to find. I hope we get EWU again in Reno. I think we would be much better prepared. :coffee:

Idaho’s a good team and Sanders and Blake are all-conference talents. But they lost Callendret, their best bench player, to what looked like a knee injury Thursday night. And they have really struggled to guard the three lately, even though their defensive numbers are good for the season.

Sanders is a smooth operator, but he’s an emotional player given to “hot dog” type plays and you can get under his skin. Blake is just a skilled, athletic post player and Nate Sherwood is a solid Big Sky player anybody would like to have.

Should be a good matchup, I’d guess the winning score will be in the 80s

During the 9 game winning streak we seemed to have a confidence at the end of the game that we were in control -- even when we were down. I guess if a couple of close shots that rattled out had dropped, we might have maintained that edge. But with no Braxton in the post, we looked flustered. And no doubt Harding is in a bit of a funk. We'll see if we can get that edge back, but this team is going to have to dig really deep right now. Great crowds both nights. Really hard to see us struggle so badly.

Just a final note. Will Chapman ever live up to expectations (at least mine) offensively? I keep waiting for some consistency -- or better yet some greater determination to get to the basket. The upside on the kid seems so high.

I needed a few days to cool off. Both teams beat us. Both employed a simple 3/4 trap, switched between man and a 2-3 zone, and didn't allow much in the middle. It slowed down our team and forced us into shooting a lot of 3s. Yes, to be fair, we hit a lot of them, but when we missed there was no chance for a second chance, and our inside the arch game was totally non-existent.

To me, it is really mind boggling that teams don't play that way every single time against Randy. It really seemed as if he was directing his player to play slow. Once in the half-court, the guys would stop so as to setup the motion (I don't know if you can call it a motion offense, maybe a standing and waiting offense, but not really motion), which allowed EWU and Idaho to set up their defense? What the hell?? Why recruit speed if you aren't going to use it?

This team has overachieved but now reality has struck. Against bad teams the Cats really do shine, but against decent competition, Weber really struggles. Once again that is what we saw this weekend. Randy needs a big coach badly. Zach isn't developing and Kozak has become non-existent on the floor. Final thought, with Gittens/Cannon, this team wins two maybe three more games, they win both this past weekend. Glad that we got Trevon Ary to sit the bench and counselled out a veteran player who we knew would contribute. Smart move by our "veteran" coach.

I'm still in a funk over the whole thing. I think that I will wait until all the dust settles to add anything to what Tal has said. There have been a few things rumbling through my cerebral corpuscle, but it would sound like an old mans rumblings right now. :wtf:

Gittens? Cannon? Who are these folk you speak of?
Neither are shining stars at their respective new schools but they certainly are missed. Harding and gittens on the floor at once may be problematic with ball distribution but also that speed could of caused major havoc.
Guess we will never know.

But lets me honest, Gittens and Cannon are much better right now than bench warmers Turner and Court. Maybe not having John is the issue? Either way, terrible job by Rahe in letting those two go.
