What will Weber State’s first basketball recruiting class since Damian Lillard went to the Portland Trail Blazers as the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft look like?
Wildcats fans now have their first clue.
Richaud Gittens, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound high school senior from Marcos De Niza High School in Tempe, Ariz., gave Weber State a verbal commitment last week.
Rivals.com rates Gittens as a three-star recruit.
As a junior, the wing player averaged 14.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.0 assists per game, according to Max Preps.
Gittens said he made the verbal commitment to Weber State coach Randy Rahe last Friday in Ogden because he felt at home on campus and with WSU’s staff.
“They really know how to develop kids into better players,” he said.
“I can relate to them. My club coaches from the Arizona Stars, they’re really intense, they know what they’re doing. They’re hard on you, not hard because they’re mad at you but hard to make you a better player. That’s mainly why I love the Weber State coaches so much. They’re just like my club coaches. I can relate to them, I really enjoy their coaching style and just the way they do everything.”
Gittens said Lillard’s success didn’t affect his decision, he was just looking for the best fit. He had offers from Idaho State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Northern Arizona, Portland State and Grand Canyon University.
Weber State coaches are not allowed to comment on recruits until they sign a national letter of intent.
