Vernon Adams Draft Combine

Surprised nobody is talking about this. But seeing as V.A. is the only (former) eagle in the combine, I thought it was worth discussion.

I'm not the best at deciphering combine results, but his measurables outside of the three cone drill seemed less than stellar. In order to ride the Russell Wilson comparison, he needed to post some comparable results.

40 Yard dash- VA: 4.83 RW: 4.55
Vertical Jump- VA 29.5 RW: 34
Broad Jump- VA: 114 in RW: 118 in
3 cone drill- VA: 6.82 RW: 6.97

I hope he can pick up a draft pick, but I am thinking he will go to free agency.

I don't get NFL channels. Did anybody see his workout?
Ranger who or what is FA?
FA means Free Agent. Didn't see his workout but apparently the hand size seems to be an issue... VA's are very small.

He was reported as having a formal interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers during or just after the NFL Combine. Would be interesting with him being coached up by the aging Big Ben... Michael Vick was only an inch taller than VA and he was successful behind their offensive line as far as I know.

Very true, but in order to fit in the NFL at that size, the player has to exhibit extraordinary athletic ability. Speaking only from measurables, Vick's 40 time blew VAs out of the water. I know scouts see beyond the measurables, but the combine did nothing to help VA. I am more inclined to say the combine hurt Vernon's NFL chances.

I agree with RJones, I don't think the combine helped VA, but not sure it was ever going to. VA is best when making plays when things break down, making something out of nothing, and he can't show that at a place like the combine. His 40 time probably doesn't help, but i don't think anyone cares that much about a QB's 40 time. His measurements were never going to be great. He probably helped himself in the interviews because he's a very likable guy.

Will be interesting to see if/where he gets drafted. Seems like he's all over the place. I do hope someone gives him a shot...

I found some discussion on the QB workouts. There are a few people saying that Vernon Adams was one of the most accurate throwers in the group.

Hopefully scouts see beyond his measurable and focus on his strengths. I still think he is more of a CFL type player.

I think his best shot at making a roster is FA. It's going to be hard for any team to justify a draft pick with his combine performance. Then again, I'm no NFL scout. We'll have to see what happens. Wishing him the best of luck.

McShay has Vernon projected to go in the third or fourth round. That would be pretty sweet!

“I think Adams is going to be one of the most intriguing prospects leading up to the draft,” McShay said. “There is a shot he goes late on Day 2 but more likely Day 3. What a great guy to bring in and develop if you are a quarterbacks coach or coordinator to adjust to the NFL and then plug in as a backup quarterback who could move around and create and make some plays. I think he’s got a chance, more so than I expected when I initially studied his tape.”

I see VA going 7th or UDFA, but only because his measurables. If he was 3" taller and 30lbs heavier I think that upgrades him to 3-4th rounder, but that will always be his knock. Teams will look at him and say, man he can throw a ball, but he can't see the field and he's so small he'll be in a bodybag most of his career... And just because of that, he'll get passed on. I do think some team will take the chance, perhaps the Browns or Cowboys after the draft. Beyond that, he's going to have to put the work in to show he's not too small and he can play at the next level.

He really is a wildcard in the draft this year. I think the reason Vernon is getting such optimistic projections is due largely to how weak the QB class is. There is a big demand for quarterbacks on a lot of NFL teams, but there is a very shallow pool coming from the college. I'm inclined to think that his weaknesses merit UDFA, but I don't claim to know as much as many of these sports writers.

Very good points, Rjones. Shoot, if I could pick NFL talent I sure wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now... But we all watch and love the game, so we're all experts in our own minds  Another team that is going to be looking for a backup QB is Denver, I think if the gave VA a shot they'd be very pleased with it. I think he would a very good fit for Denver.

He's tough to go out and draft because he certainly doesn't look like an NFL QB. I'm not dissing his size so much as the fact he has spent a good bit of the last couple of years hurt. He'd be great at being a back-up who could come in situationally and provide a spark. The problem is finding someone willing to spend a draft pick and a healthy amount of cash to make that happen.

The intangibles are what favors him. He knows how to win. He knows how to create. And he's smart and charismatic. For these reasons, I hope he gets a shot.
