In addition to signees, I spoke with Barnum on Wednesday re: where his coaching staff stood. He is still trying to hire a couple of guys.

It's pretty obvious that Barnum felt that the coaches he let go were more of a liability to team chemistry than they were as an asset for coaching continuity. It seems to me, that if we look at this dispassionately we are seeing the real divide that was plaguing this team. Barnum must be well liked by the players, because as has been pointed out, it seems so few have left in the wake of a dismal season and a coaching change. The ability to attract what seems to be, on paper at least, a pretty good class also speaks to the viability of the program under Barnum. I will still be critical of his play calling that I have seen over the years, but I am willing to concede that it's possible he was acting under Burton's orders.

I think we can learn from one single position where this program will be at the end of the season. If he insists on QB by committee, there is little chance the program will succeed. If on the other hand we see a decisive decision on the QB early on (maybe not in spring) but definitely after a week of fall, we will see the true vision Barnum has for the program.

This is so true. Success in the Big Sky has always started with strong, consistent play from the quarterback position. The sooner a team can figure out a starting quarterback (Montana State for example last year), the more success they will enjoy as the year goes on. Teams still trying to decide between two (or three) at the end of October generally are preparing for the next year.
