Viking Tradition?

Viking Tradition, is there a such thing? We need to create something during the games and keep it going. Saw many on youtube yesterday, Notre dame does push ups for every TD, Texas A&M has the 12th man, Alabama sings "Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer" After every win. Anyone have an idea?

I like the idea of something that tracks home wins. Maybe a tradition where there's a spot in the stadium for logos of teams we've defeated and the team does something (tasteful of course) to the logo after each victory.

Another idea might involve erecting a Viking statue at the stadium or on campus that could be touched on gameday. Lots of southern schools have variations on this. I've never thought about it before, but there should be a Viking statue on campus anyway. It would be a constant symbol to students and faculty that Athletics is here to stay.

The team used to go over to the crowd to sing a song to the fans following the post game meeting following a win. That seemed to be a Walsh thing so I'm not sure if that will occur this year.

I think that was really just the players being super excited for the win. I don't think it had anything to do with coaching.

I like the statue idea, I'd also like to do the whole Red Mile thing Fresno does, they make the opposing team walk a whole mile, right through all the fan festivities while they yell and scream at them, into the stadium. There are lots of ideas out there, keep them coming!

I heard starting this last year from a friend that goes to Fresno State that the NCAA made them shorten the distance to the field. I don't know if it is true but he said it was because Oregon complained before they went there this year saying that because the walked so far that they would not have enough time in the locker room at halftime.

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin would be my vote. The pep band used to play it quite a bit at the basketball games.

Also, we can always do the Hey! Song the way they do at basketball games, but I'd like to class up the joint with some English-styled soccer crowd chants---like the snippet once recorded by Pink Floyd. We could become a college football crowd with a new twist---a soccer-style European bent. We could start a whole new trend in college football---like how the wave was invented at UW.

Imagine our crowd being like this

when the opposition is on offense.

That is a way we may well be able to garner support from the Timbers' Army. We could all learn to crowd chant together!

One thing I think PSU has always needed is a marching band. I know it won't happen anytime soon, mainly because at most colleges the marching band comes out of the athletic budget. But still it could be an additional recruiting tool and another avenue for increased attendence

The university music department apparently seeks to concentrate on higher quality Schnitzer-type entertainment, opera theater and the like. That's okay, so long as we know what we're dealing with.

You know, a collegiate band that marches may be quite a stretch to organize right away. So, I recommend---as an intermediate step---that we begin with a Band-in-the-Stands, one that doesn't need to march, but one that does provide the great band music needed for a truly American football game event. Especially, we need drummers who can really drum out that rhythmic cadence like one hears in the great Big Ten game tradition. A band provides the power, volume and dramatic impact of their music, and that is an important element of the game.

Playing for the university game day band would be great for talented, jointly-enrolled students from MHCC, CCC, PCC, ChCC, and Clark College. Volunteers from the metro area's other colleges and universities (George Fox, WSU-Vancouver, Reed, Portland, OHSU, Pacific, and Lewis and Clark) may also become interested when the Vikings begin to show some real drawing power.

We could use a great band leader with some star power of his own to attract the talented Portland collegiate musicians together and organize them into a cohesive unit. What's Doc Severson doing these days?

Great post. I almost forgot to make my monthly rant about the lack of a band. This would be another tangible means of improving the gameday experience.

By some chance does anybody in the PSU Athletic Department read our posts to get a feel for what what way the wind blows? One thing I think that JG and Mouse both have is the fingerspitzengefuhl to know what it takes to win, but they also need to know what the masses also want.

I have a feeling that somebody conveys it to them, but I would like to have some of them as members so we can relate better to each other.

Please excuse me for bringing up a semi-random thought here...

Idaho HS Girls Basketball finals this past season: the Coeur d'Alene rivalry came south for the championship... Coeur d'Alene v Lake City.

I should mention that Coeur d'Alene are Vikings, too.

Coeur d'Alene brought a drum line up, not a band. I'm not sure this is regular practice (the boys team could have been playing in their district tournament that night), but they made it look like regular procedure. Even seemed to have a version of a fight song, with the cheerleaders having a regular "dance" for it. Bass-heavy, for that matter. Unique, different, even funky in its own way... but would that take in Portland?

I suspect that, even with the vibe Timbers Army could provide, you'll not get enough support for "pointyball." Really, a marching band is a must.

It's been awhile since I've been to a PSU game but didn't they (maybe they still do) blow a Viking horn after every touchdown? I say get rid of the current Hamburgerler looking mascot and replace it with a person ala Tommy Trojan dressed in Viking battle attire (is that pc?). I guess with a spear as opposed to an axe.

My attempt at some substitute lyrics to Life in a Northern Town which melody and lyrics could serve as a game tradition of "the other PSU," Portland State University. Here's a YouTube rendition for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF9768pF6hA

Life in the Portland Town

Private Reserve did come from here
And so much microbrew'ry beer
And the flavor lasted all day
All day
And through an open window came
A sound of an northern English fame
To move through our town today
Ah -

(Chant)
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey
Life in the Portland town.
Ah hey ma ma ma

They sat on the stony bricks
To witness them all do their tricks
And everyone else came down
To listen -
He said, “In the decade of the 80s
Stalemated war did unfreeze
With Dark Horse Comedy
And Matt Groening."

(Chant)
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey
Life in the Portland town.
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey
The Viks shut them down.

The evening had turned to rain
Watch the water roll down the drain,
As we followed them down
To the station
And though they never would wave goodbye,
You could see blues written in their eyes
As the train rolled out of sight
Bye Bye.

(Chant)
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey
Life in the Portland town.
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey

Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma
Ah hey ma ma ma hey
Ah hey ma ma ma
Take it easy on yourself
Ah hey ma ma ma
(Fade)
