Vincent Johnson, the Portland State defensive tackle who was dismissed from the team last spring and reinstated earlier this month after a school investigation, has yet to return to practice pending an NCAA decision about his eligibility.

PSU spokesman Scott Gallagher said the athletic department has asked the NCAA to grant a waiver to make Johnson immediately eligible to play.

Gallagher said Johnson came to an agreement with the athletic department that "in the meantime he would not come to practice."

Gallagher said the school considers Johnson a member of the team, and he remains on scholarship.

Johnson said by email that he was eligible to practice but not play in games because he did not take classes he needed to pass over the summer after his losing his spot on the team.

Johnson told The Oregonian in August that PSU coach Nigel Burton dismissed him because he was missing practices to attend religious observances.

That led to an investigation by PSU's department of global diversity and inclusion. Johnson was reinstated at the conclusion of the investigation.

Asked Wednesday about Johnson's status, Burton said: "I hope whatever happens is what's best for the team."
