Visiting SLO Thread

So, someone asked what to do around Pismo Beach/SLO..

As a local, I would be happy to help out any EWU fans who are making the trip south.

He asked about Pismo Beach- so, we'll start there.

I'll also do one for SLO..

Pismo Beach is a really old school beach town- Which usually hosts people from Fresno and Bakersfield. Bakersfield especially.. Some locals call it "Bako Beach".. Regardless, there's a reason why so many people from Bakersfield make their pilgrimage to Pismo Beach annually.. It has to do with the cooler temperatures (yes, expect the water to be cold, and expect some cool days this time of year).

You will need a wetsuit if you decide to get in the ocean, but if you do I would recommend renting a wetsuit and a boogie board.. A boogie board is a lot of fun even if you've never been in the ocean before, you can rip it up. Water temperature:

While in Pismo, if you want the Chowda.. try Splash Cafe's Sourdough breadbowl..

Otherwise, across the street is Cool Cats, a good place for a really good old fashioned style burger.

Yes, it is legal to fish off any pier in California, without a fishing license- One of the few times you don't need a license to do something in California.

Now, if getting naked on the beach is your thing - Or bringing binoculars to the beach and watching people, then Pirate's Cove near Avila beach is your thing.. One of a very few nude beaches in California:

Dinosaur Caves

So, in summary, things to do in Pismo:

1. Rent a wetsuit and boogy board, and get in the ocean.
2. Try out Splash Cafe
3. Walk the pier
4. Relax on the beach
5. Start a pick-up game of volleyball/catch football with some hotties.

Please be careful what you post on the EWU bulletin board. This train will quickly go off the rails. 8-)

Have you been to the meltdown that is eGriz lately?

Looks like your University is an amazing place. Wish I could make the trip. Definitely going to try and schedule a trip in two years.

 Good luck against Cal Poly and enjoy the barbequed tri tip beef, craft beers, and nude beach volleyball.

San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo de Tolosa - Founded 1772 (but habitated by the Chumash and Salinan indians long before that).

San Luis Obispo was one of the original "Wild West" towns.. With a very rugged history.

San Luis Obispo became large enough and connected enough to the railroad to eventually develop a Chinatown..

Here Chinatown is seen on Palm Street at Chorro Street

Ah_Louis_Store.jpg

the Ah Louis Store is still there today..

By the early 1900s, San Luis Obispo had grown to be one of the largest cities/towns in between San Francisco and Los Angeles

..continued.. San Luis Obispo history.

San Luis Obispo, although the name sounds like a Spanish Saint, is in fact named after St. Bishop of Toulouse, France. - A little piece of trivia..

Also, if you don't want people to know you're visiting, make sure to pronounce the name correctly - San (as in San Diego) Luis (as in Lewis) Obispo as in Obispo. Not San Louis (as in the king of France) Obispo.

Anyway..

Here is an interesting factoid many people even in SLO are not aware of:

San Luis Obispo was one of the only cities in California to have a Streetcar system- outside San Francisco, or Los Angeles:

Mission-and-Bear.jpg

Of course, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was one of the original California Missions..

Near the Mission, you will find Higuera Street, the main shopping street. Lots of Jewelry stores, bars, restaurants, shops etc along here.

While the above image might look old, this was taken very recently. The Fremont Theater is one of the most beautiful historic Art-Deco theaters in the nation..

Visited by many of Hollywood's original characters, and close to Hearst Castle, the theater has a huge amount of history.

San Luis Obispo is home to the World's first Motel

Of course, no visit would be complete without trying one of the 3 main competing Sandwich Delis..

A rivalry between High Street Deli (World's best Hat Pastrami as far as I'm concerned)

Guss' Grocery:
Guss2.jpg

(Has a great beer-garden!)

and on the North Side of Town, (not as close in the competition.. but still)
Lincoln Deli:

Bike-Night-at-Lincoln-Market-Deli.jpg

Although SLO is definitely part of Alta California.. it appears to be the Sandwiches and Tri-Tip/BBQ and Seafood we are known for. Good Mexican food is hard to find in SLO ironically.

Of course.. nobody can forget John Madden was a Cal Poly Alumni, and player:

JohnMaddenCalPoly.jpg

.. and that concludes the brief history of San Luis Obispo.

Mustang Stadium has been filled a lot fuller to years recently passed..

Expect the atmosphere to be high-tilt.. Sold out one would expect, but full of rabid/knowledgeable fans ;)

Cool thread. Love the history and geography. Nice work here. :thumb:

Interesting factoid about Cheney...It was the cheese capital of Washington at the turn of the last century. 1/3 of the cheese produced in Washington State came from Cheney creameries.

That's all I got for now.

Hope to visit SLO in the future.

When you do visit, you have to go up Terrace Hill to get a good view of the city.. It's a very short hike/walk up from Bishop St.

If you're in town on Thursday, the farmer's market has essentially a BBQ competition every week.

While "Santa Maria Style BBQ" might be the most famous regionally, SLO BBQ usually incorporates a sweeter, porkier type of BBQ than the beefier, saltier Santa Maria Style.

CalPolyvsEWU should be getting paid by the SLO chamber of commerce. I think I'm ready to start planning my next vacation. This is what dedication to one's craft looks like.
