Tom is a first class person. You know he broadcasted these games as a labor of love, because they couldn't have been paying him much. He will be difficult to replace.

Podcast interview with Judah Newby of 750TheGame.

The game I remember was a recent one that I actually was not listening to. 2015, the year we went to the playoffs and we were playing Idaho State at Pocatello which meant that the Idaho State's radio crew was handling the play by play duties on the Big Sky live feed. We were kicking their butts all over the place when the power went out in the press box, knocking out the power to the radio feed, but somehow the video feed kept going. The Idaho State radio crew did not seem to be a hurry and kept talking about all kinds of stuff as they evidently thought no one could hear them. One of them looked over at the PSU booth and I can still remember what they said. "Look over there. Tommy Hewitt is on his cell phone evidently broadcasting the game that way back to Portland. Maybe we should do that (laughter)". I switched over to the radio broadcast at that time and listened to the rest of his play by play, all the while thinking that he doesn't care how many are listening. If there is even only one person listening, he is going to broadcast the game to that one person, even without power in the pressbox in Pocatello, ID. Anyone wants to know the definition of dedication, that is a perfect example.

Anyone know who the replacement will be? I'm thinking they'll go with Teri Mariani who filled in a couple times on the basketball side last year. It is a simple hire and a quick fix.

One name I'm beginning to hear more, however is Mike Barrett. I don't know how interested he'd be calling PSU games, but he has said that he wouldn't mind another broadcasting job, but it has to be close to Portland. Well, we are in Portland and the games are relatively low impact. He would still be able to be the spokesman for the Diamond Project and still be in broadcasting.

I can't see him going from the NBA to the Big Sky, but stranger things have happened.

Naturally, we'd need to have Mike Rice come in for color commentary as well.

Imagine Rice on the mic watching Big Sky officials. He'd lead the league in ejections. :-)

Barrett has said that his dream job would be working the Beavers games, but Mike Parker does not seem to be leaving anytime soon. If hired by PSU, I doubt any one would think this is long term. Nowadays it seems, at least from PSU's perspective, they don't take the announcer on the road anymore, especially with the live streaming being done by the home crew. I think the Viks could provide Barrett with a great deal of flexibility along with keeping his name out there in the broadcast spectrum. It also gives the Portland fanbase someone within Portland State athletics that they can relate to, someone they know.

As far as Rice goes, I think the first game in Missoula (if he went), whether football or basketball, he would be in jail before the game was done.

New "voice of the Vikings" is Matt Richert,

Preseason Camp Opens Next Week As Vikings Prepare For Turnaround Season

https://goviks.com/news/2018/8/2/football-preseason-camp-opens-monday-as-vikings-prepare-for-turnaround-season.aspx

"Portland State returns to the airwaves this season on Rip City Radio 620 AM. New for the Viking program will be play-by-play man Matt Richert. He replaces long-time broadcaster Tom Hewitt, who retired this past year."

This is from the Hillsboro Hops website:

"Burk will again be joined in the booth by veteran sportscaster Matt Richert. Richert has called high school play-by-play for 25 years, including the last five in Hillsboro. He is the voice of Pacific University athletics, and has also called basketball play-by-play for the University of Portland. Richert received the Oregon Athletic Directors Association Sports Media Award in 2004-05."

Here's a sample of his work (I believe) from a Pacific University football video:

Sounds like a good hire. Interesting to go from UP to PSU in basketball.

Football, we're going from "to the house" to "see you on the other side". :thumb:

The official announcement from PSU.

Do we know if we are going to have a radio station cover our home and away men's basketball games this year? I believe that last year the only audio available was attached to the video feed. Every other D1 program in the NW has a radio station covering their games. We should too.
