vs. NAU

Eags on a run, now 24-17. Chiverton with 2 3's. Doing a poor job converting FT's, though. Eags opening up a big lead with Chiverton with a huge block and 3 on the transition!

Well, that was probably the best game we've played this season. Eags win 80-59 over what appeared to be an utterly overmatched NAU squad. I don't know how on earth they have won more games than us this season. A few positives, we had a pretty decent FG %, a large advantage in rebounding, and had quite a few assists. Movement off of the ball was much better as well. I like how we used our size advantage and actually scored quite a few points in the paint as well. Defensively, we had a ton of blocked shots, but I really think that had a lot to do with how much taller our guys seemed to be than NAU's.

Negatives were our horrendous FT shooting. I don't know how we could be so bad at shooting those, especially Seifert, who otherwise had a great game....although if he had hit even half of his FT's we would have won by 30.

Time to go on a mid-season winning streak if we want to make the tournament, but this was a nice start.

Something I noticed was the fun our players seemed to be having this game. 20 point leads will do that for you or maybe having fun leads to 20 point lead. Regardless nice results. It does not appear we will miss Crosgile that much
NAU seemed to have too many easy steals. Lazy passes by guards were snatched away by their guards too many times.

Looks like it was a great game last night. The three seniors made a difference. Good game for Chiverton! :notworthy:

Fun game to be at. Although I was VERY disappointed with those fans who were giving Martin a hard time while he was practicing his free throws at half time. Classless in my opinion. :ohno:

Great game. It was nice to see us play real basketball where we actually worked the ball for a good shot instead of just throwing up prayers from 3, and we finally played some defense. Hopefully it continues.

I heard about this on the radio today. Why on earth would coach embarrass the kid by making him go out there by himself to shoot free throws? The rest of the team was in the locker room! The game was in hand. I feel bad for the player as well.

I don't have a problem with Hayford making his guy shoot free throws at Half Time. That player is shooting les than 50% from the stripe. That's embarrassing enough. Only 2 players on the team have decent percentages, Parker Kelly and Jeff Forbes. What I DO have a problem with is the handful of fans who would cheer when he sank one. THAT was classless.

I agree on the importance of FT but why put the kid in that position? The time to work on that is in practice. Coach put that kid on display. Everyone on the radio agreed. Bad move though the intention was good.

Completely classless by Hayford IMO. College students did what college students are going to do. Hayford is an adult and is supposed to be teaching the kid. What the hell does that teach him?! He has/had a couple of bad actors on his team, but he hasnt publicly embarassed them. But he does that to a kid who by all accounts that I have heard is a good kid? Seifert should have told him to go commit a sexual act upon himself.

I am glad that Dennis Patchin called him out on radio.

Again. I don't have a problem with it. And I wasn't talking about the students, I was talking about "grown ups" yelling at the top of their lungs when he made one. Should be ashamed of themselves.

I agree with 1990 that we dont know all of the facts, but let me ask this question: under what circumstances WOULD it be ok? And this question: does anybody (Coach included) think that shooting an extra 15 or 20 free throws at halftime is miraculously gonna make the kid a better free throw shooter after he has probably shot 500 free throws earlier this week and probably a hundred earlier that day in practice and pre-game?

I agree with superman regarding grown adults giving the kid a Bronx cheer. Shameful. But your logic escapes me how is it embarassing and shameful for the fans to do that, but it is ok for Hayford to willingly, publicly humiliate the kid. Again, let me ask a question: If that was YOUR son would it still be ok? And let me ask yet another question: Can anybody out there imagine Kryzewski (sp?), or Izzo, or Self, or Few... Let me stop. Can you imagine ANY other D1 coach doing that? I have been watching college basketball longer than most, and cant remember seeing or hearing of anything like this.

I can tell you this - after this incident, I would never, ever allow my son or grandson to go play for Jim Hayford. It will be interesting to see if this has a negative impact on recruiting because other coaches will definitely us it against us.

No reason in the world to do that to a player...none. Hope the AD has a talk with him and make sure something like this does not happen again. Bad reflection on EWU.

All - I agree with the rationale that this wasn't the time nor place for something like that, and the rest of the comments. He should have been in the locker room with the rest of the team at halftime, not out on the court shooting FT's. But does anyone seriously believe that it was Coach's intent to publicly humiliate the kid? I'm not defending Hayford's decision, it was wrong IMO, but I think that it's equally wrong to assume that Hayford meant to publicly humiliate a player. Bit of a stretch, I think.

According to coach Hayford last night on the coaches show. It was Martin Seiferth's idea to come out early and shoot FT's NOT coach's. Before we all jump to conclusions about people, why don't we wait until all the info comes out. Me included.
