vs SDSU?

Offensively: Start with a solid run game and short slant pass routes. They are going to start the game playing back from the line of scrimmage, and we need to make them pay for it. After we start taking some chunks and they make defensive adjustments, get some deep balls to Shaq Hill and watch their defense go to shambles.

Defensively: Load the box. Don't blitz early, and keep the ball in front of you. Only blitz after you've had some successful stops. SDSU will start trying to play catch up with our offense and this is when you lay some smacks on the QB. Make him have to think about throwing the ball and avoiding pain.

I'd like to see more of the short quick passes especially on the flats to allow our fast receivers, and rb's to crank up the yards after catch. In fact I would script the first series to go no huddle and constantly throw short to our playmakers. Orders to Vernon, NO attempts longer than 10 yards until he gets the go ahead from coaches. Wear that big D-line down and slow em down. If we get Quincy in space we know how fast he is, whether it was a hand off or short pass, he will crank up some yards. When they start "peeking" in the backfield..."touchdown Cooper Kupp, or Shaq Hill, or Cory Mitchell!
Eastern on D- It is not reasonable to think we can stop them so let Zenner have short runs but don't over commit and let him burn us for big gains. Make them the hardest 200 yards he has earned in his career. They will no doubt try to surprise us with more passes and when we start rushing some screens. Play him just like we do guys like McGee, pressure but contain.
If Zenner gets 200 yds and Vernon throws for 500+ we win. Fun game with two very different offenses.

Offense - Get our play-makers in space. :D

Defense - Bend but don't break. Keep contain on Zenner and don't let him get outside. Make him run between the tackles for his yards.

Observations from YSU and NAU games:

SDSU runs strong side 60+% with the draw as a good change up on 2nd and long downs (they pass out of this formation too). O Line has wider than normal splits, this isn't Stanford's O line and EWU D line should match up well. WR's block well but lack vertical speed. QB for SDSU runs well situationally and can make the first defender miss. Additionally, SDSU likes to go wide side of the field as Zenner kicks it outside very well. On D, SDSU is playing some younger players up front and they are a bit undersized per roster data. Play quick, not necessarily fast on D Line or LB's. Teams can't run typical cross type stunts up front on D line against SDSU, slanting the line is effective if LB's stay at home to stop cut backs, especially backside edge. SDSU O line is mobile, didn't see a lot of pulling, but they reach block well and contain edge defenders.

On D: stack up the middle, maintain edge with DE's, keep LB's off line of scrimmage, important first guy makes tackle or holds on. Bring safety into box/edge on running downs and go man coverage 80%. Bring TJ or Baines on corner blitz. EWU's deep D line will be an asset. Essentially, gameplan as if this is an option rushing attack like EWU did against Cal Poly for the first three quarters to minimize SDSU big plays on ground and make QB beat you with arm. Third downs can bring the D line pressure with spy on QB. SDSU will make some plays but making them chip away at it will create some opportunities for turnovers.

On O: EWU will be able to run behind big O line against undersized D Line and LB's. Fly sweeps to attack edge and create misdirection with play action to open up big plays down field and slow down rush. YSU ran effective reverses on overpursuing SDSU D, EWU has faster players in Hill, Bomber et al. Wheel RB's out of backfield will be effective against LB's if SDSU in man, if not man, than bombs away against zone coverages and quick runs.

EWU wins by grinding early on D and being patient for the big play on O.
