Thank goodness something other than coaching news....with that being said.. So I just got done writing that I thought Robertson would get it, but after comparing both his stats and VA's I think VA has a better than average shot at this, which shocks the heck out of me since he missed 4 games.
I find it hard to believe Arias get's it as the quality of opponents are
:twocents:

Vernon in a landslide.
Book it.
If that does happen WOW the Peyton Award Winner and the Rice Award winner for one more year coming back next year!!

I have a hard time believing it won't go to a senior.

Robertson is mostly likely to win I would think.

Robertson is a Jr Arias is the lone senior and is the leader in most FCS stat categories for QB performance too

First of all, congratulations to Coach Baldwin, his staff and of course VA. These types of nominations are valuable in a number of areas and frankly a lot of fun.

1. VA could have won it last year
2. Had an amazing game at UW to start the year
3. Beats a healthy Montana State at their place in the final moments with another amazing performance
4. Comes back early from a broken foot still in pain to help EWU beat Montana here in November

I can't imagine him not winning it after missing four games and then ending up on the list. Why would the committee put him and the other candidates through that? They are all three deserving but I think VA's been the best player in the country for two years straight and is the Payton award winner this year.

Exactly!
I think he should have won it last year, and I think the committee knows that as well. But they were probably leery of giving it to a sophomore. I think they know they screwed that up, and to make up for it, they'll give it to him this year. Not that Vernon's not deserving of it this year, but almost like a reward for two of the best back to back seasons in FCS history. AND, his stats this year more than make him worthy of it. SO it's not like the committee is going out on a limb here by giving it to him.

That's my thought.

5. Played an entire half with a broken foot to lead his team to a win versus ISU.

Should be interesting...my gut tells me it's Robertson or Arias, but at the same time if you look at the 8 games VA played in, his per-game stats are better. He was also the runner-up last year...so I think he has an outside shot to win it, depending on how the voters feel about his missing 4 games.

Did lose our only conference game when VA was out.... VA for the Payton Award ;-)

With 160 voters, I agree with others who feel VA will win it based on his work the past two years. I assume many of these people were voters last year and are aware of how amazing he's been since he came to EWU. We will never know but we may have had a different result in Pullman in 2012 if he had played. I'm not being critical of our coaches or Kyle Padron but as we've seen our QB is very special. We will see that again today.

The Walter Payton Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding offensive player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) of college football as chosen by a nationwide panel of media and college sports information directors.[1] The honor was first given in 1987 to the outstanding player in the division, but in 1995, eligibility was restricted to offensive players, as the Buck Buchanan Award for defensive players was inaugurated.

The bust was named in honor of the late National Football League (NFL) legend Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State University.[2]

Among the many schools in the division, only eight schools have won it twice: Appalachian State, Colgate, Eastern Washington, Georgia Southern, Idaho, New Hampshire, Villanova, and Eastern Illinois. In 2009, Armanti Edwards from Appalachian State became the first player to receive the award twice.[3]

Based of this definition VA will be the next to win it two times 2014 and 2015 GO EAGS !!

i think Vernon is the best player in fcs and he has a great shot of winning the award, next year. missing 4 games will be too much to overcome in the voting process.

We'd all love for Vernon to win and I'd be perfectly happy with Arias winning it. However, I suspect any Western votes get split between the two and Robertson wins by a healthy margin.

It is hard to reconcile the fact that Vernon missed 1/3 of the season. Not his fault, but it certainly has to be considered.

Yup. I am thinking all the western votes will be split between the two. Robertson probably wins by a landslide.

I think Vernon wins it. He has by far the most name recognition of any FCS player in the country. If this were FBS all the voters would be watching highlights of all the candidates and make more informed decisions. I doubt most of the voters have even seen highlights of most of these guys. So, they will either vote straight from the stats or based on who they know. They know VA.

Besides, if Vernon missing 4 games was a big deal he would have never made the top 3. Vernon Adams will be EWU's 3rd Payton Award winner this year, and he will win his second in a row in 2015.

I think one thing that weighs in his favor is the fact that he was the runner-up last year. I do agree that it has become more of a "career award", so that fact, plus his high profile status in the media might help him out.

That said, I think it's also largely a statistics award. I thought he should have won it last year, but I think the EIU Qb had slightly more passing yards, even though VA had more rushing yards, and more total offense, IIRC.

Anyway, I hope you're right, but if they're just looking at total stats rather than by game averages, It doesn't look good for VA. By no means does that mean he doesn't deserve it, though.
