I sent a email to Wanless about the games with EWU and Northern Arizona.
I wanted to see how he would respond to what I sent him.
I sent comments from this board from various people and the overall frustration of this program not being able to get over the hump. Also how this team was way to talented not to make the playoffs this year. I also asked about the schedule and why we were relagated to so many road games early on and how that stunted the growth or prospects of a winning season after the Oreagon state game. This is his reply.
Dear Footballnow ,
Thank you for your thoughts. I’m not sure that I can say anything that is going to make you feel better. We all are disappointed in where we are, but I know how hard our coaches and teams works every day to put themselves in position to win games. It’s not easy as some might suggest. As Marshall stated, we made too many errors against a football team that also has a lot of talent to win the game. The schedule has been tough, but that is a product of the conference office. We are not the only team that has played a tough schedule and we will continue to play that way in the future. We did not lose those games because they were on the road. We lost because we didn’t play well enough to win. Simple statement. You are right in that this is a talented team and like everyone in the league, we have had our share of injuries. Having been in the game for 40 years, that is going to happen. It’s a tough game and injuries happen. No one can predict when someone is going to get hurt but we have a great team of Dr’s and trainers that work extremely hard to rehabilitate them as fast as possible.
Trust me, I understand your frustration. We are all passionate about Hornet football. When you are building a program you sometimes take some hits that you can’t predict. Just remember, we are finally in a position to be frustrated. Remember a few years back when we were not even competitive. We still have a good team that works hard, cares about winning and gives great effort every time they take the field. I’m glad you are disappointed, because I know you care, but don’t’ lose perspective.
This will be a tough week at Portland State. They just beat EWU 48-23, so the Hornets will have to be ready for a great battle.
