Sacramento State athletics director Terry Wanless, a finalist for the athletic director job at Eastern Illinois, has withdrawn his name from consideration, a Sac State spokesman said Thursday. Wanless had previously said he was interested in the position because it would move him closer to his two children.

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Barbara Burke, the deputy director of athletics and senior women’s administrator at the University of Wyoming, has been hired as the new athletic director at Eastern Illinois University.

The announcement was made by EIU President William L. Perry earlier today (March 21, 2008).
Burke becomes the ninth full-time athletic director in the Panthers 108 years of athletic competition. She will assume duties as EIU’s athletic director on July 1, replacing Ken Baker, who has served as the interim athletic director since August.
“I would like to say thank you to Dr. Perry, Dr. Nadler and the search committee for the confidence they have shown in me,” Burke said. “I count it an honor to be offered this position. I am extremely thrilled and humbled to become the next athletic director at Eastern Illinois University. I understand and appreciate the rich tradition at EIU and the role that intercollegiate athletics plays within the academic community.”
