Weber State Football's Second Scrimmage

8/18 - Stewart Stadium - This morning, Weber State’s football team held a scrimmage at Stewart Stadium. The game was about 80 plays, and good things were happening on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Mike Hoke passed the ball very well again, completing about 20 of his 26 passes. Hoke also had an 80-yard run from the one yard line on the first play of the game, then later threw a 15-yard pass for touchdown on the same drive. Hoke also went on later to complete a full drive going 6 for 6 passing. The second drive of the game had similar results as the first, as there was 50 yard run, exploiting the defense. After the drive, coaches were audible in their demand for a tougher defense, and they got it. The next two drives resulted in no first downs and forced punts.

One thing I was looking for during the scrimmage was how the ratio of pass and running plays would be on the offensive end. Coach Mac was a run up the middle guy, but today the play distribution was pretty even, with about 45% running plays and 55% passing plays.

While the starters always tend to shine, there were highlights had by many. Quarterback Ben Maraz connected with Jarret Gooden for a spectacular 80-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Shaun McClain kicked a very impressive 51-yard field goal after missing his first attempt. (Too bad there are no do-overs in a game situation). One of the most exciting plays was a one-handed catch by Jordan Clemente from Mike Hoke for a 20-yard touchdown.

Running Back Josh Booker was back in action and looking good running down the field. Booker came back from sitting out last scrimmage due a concussion. Running back CJ Tuckett did not play again due to injury. I spoke briefly with Head Athletic Trainer, Joel Bass, about his condition, and he reported that Tuckett is about 80% healed, and sat out today to prevent further injury. Bass also said that defensive end, Trevor Pletcher, is still recovering from a sprained ankle, and will back to action in a few days.

The Wildcats will have another scrimmage next Wednesday August 22 at 7:00pm that will open to the public and media. The season starts September 1st as Weber takes on Fresno State. Weber’s first home game will be September 15th at 6:00pm and can be heard on 88.1 Weber FM.

Prob need to keep Hoke healthy most of all - sounds like he could be in for a big year:
