Weber State @ PSU

Have we really not beaten Weber State since 2006? Yikes!

Caught Burton on the Canzano show today.

Canzano: "You need a kicker."

Well stated...

Play calling seemed to work pretty well today. How about that wildcat, appropriately used against Weber. Plinke's our new fullback.

Add --- We finally got a field goal. Kinsella kicked a 39 yarder. He's a freshman and I think will be our regular field goal kicker for the next couple years. He missed the short one - it was a very tight angle, apparently. Practice the angles! I see what Scooter means about passing. EWU ran for 300 odd yards - but they also passed for 400. Leaving aside the fact that we have apparently only average QBs, I wonder if the Pistol just doesn't lend itself to passing?

Just for the record: Kinsella made a 47 yard FG and missed a 25 yard attempt. He made all of the extra points. Seems to have better leg than Fernandez.

Call me old fashioned, but I like an old school ram it down your throat running game; and we seemed to do that yesterday.

Some notes:

- Our passing game is a dumpster fire. I only feel safe when a tight end is under center. ;-) Plinke was fun to watch in the wildcat. Keep that going since he averaged 7.9 per carry. WSU left a couple of picks on the field since we seem to make it a habit to throw into traffic.

- DJ Adams was a workhorse.

- The offensive line was really pushing WSU around yesterday.

-That fake punt in the 4th by WSU was one of the worst play calls that I've ever seen.

- FG kicking. Nail a 47 yarder, but miss from 25? What the what?

- It's frustrating how we can't seem to deliver the death blow when we have another team on the ropes. We went up 24-3 on that fumble return, then gave up the long TD pass on a blown coverage, then missed that field goal to end the half. 27-3 is a much better way to end the half than 24-10.

- I think that WSU QB will be pretty good in the future, but he's got some work to do. He seemed to deliver quite a few of his throws very low to his receivers where they probably could have had a reception.

- Not sure who is going to start under center next week, but in my opinion, we need to pick a guy and go with him. There were a couple instances where the route that was ran by the receiver and the route that Ramirez was expecting were not on the same page. Also, there was an instance where Dean was way open (and clapping so loud that I could clearly hear it) and Ramirez didn't even look his way. With Dean's size and speed, that would have gone for quite a few yards.

- On to Idaho State. Let's see if we can't get three in a row and get to .500 in conference.

Going to miss DJ Adams next year, but Tago gives promise to the future Viking backfield:

Portland State plows through Wildcats

Portland State led wire-to-wire Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field, beating Weber State 45-24 in Big Sky football.

The Vikings improved to 2-3 in the conference, while the Wildcats fell to 0-5. PSU is 5-4 overall, Weber State 1-8.

DJ Adams ran 32 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and Collin Ramirez got the call at quarterback for PSU and connected on 10 of 22 throws for 130 yards and one TD.

Thomas Carter had five catches, including a 36-yarder early in the first quarter that gave the Viks a 10-0 lead.

Adams' first TD, from 7 yards, made the score 17-7 early in the second quarter.

Then safety David edgerson ran back a fumble 28 yards for a TD and a 24-3 lead midway through the period.

Weber State closed to within 24-10 at the half, going 70 yards in six plays.

But Portland State put together an 86-yard, 13-play march and scored on another 7-yard Adams run midway through the third period to boost its edge to 31-10.

WSU scored with one minute left in the third quarter, only to have PSU running back Nate Tago cap drives of 70 and 75 yards with TD runs of 7 and 20 yards as the Vikings won going away before the announced crowd of 4,285.

The PSU defense held Weber State to 59 yards rushing on 33 attempts. The Wildcats passed for 331 yards.

Linebacker Jaycob Shoemaker led the Viking defense in tackles with 10.

PSU finished with 350 yards on the ground on 58 tries for an edge in total offense, 480 yards to 390.

Adams upped his season rushing total to 1,006 yards with his sixth 100-yard game of the year.

Next for PSU is a 2 p.m. Saturday game at Idaho State (3-6, 1-5 Big Sky).

We seem to run the ball well, so it has that going for it. I know it's probably been stated already, but are our QBs true Pistol QBs?
