signpost article about some students discussing the idea of changing our name from weber state univ to weber univ. i dont agree with any of the story; i dont think i would like the name.
the article's arguments as to why weber univ is better than weber state univ:
1. could help attract more potential students, as well as show that WSU is more than a commuter school.
catcat reponse: i cant think of a single reason why that could be the case. also, weber's purpose per the baord of regents is infact to be a commuter school. there is nothing wrong with that. you can be both. it doesnt have to be commuter only. examples of our mission - note the campuses around such as davis, roy....etc. did u know when complete, the davis campus will facilitate 12,000 students? pretty cool.
2. we won’t be mistaken as a community college or a smaller college. We will be known as a university.
ccr: why would we be mistaken as a junior college? university is already in the name. its not Weber CC or Weber JC or even Weber College. is there a 2 yr college with "state" in the name? Im struggling to think of one.
We are currently known as a univ had have been since 1991. As for "smaller college" what does that mean? If you mean athletics well we are a smaller college in our bball conference and having FCS is "smaller" than FBS.
3. The perceptions that Weber State University had could be greatly changed just by dropping the ‘state.’”
ccr: please provide a reason or example as to why this could be the case? i would just say students showing up to a game and having school pride would do the trick. usu has the most college plates in utah yet utah, uvu, weber and byu all have most students i believe. my point is usu fans love their school more than the rest or it could just be that usu doenst have the commuter aspect that weber, uvu, utah and byu have being large schools in the biggest cities. if you want college town atmosphere you go to usu or suu.
4. if WSU dropped the “state,” not only would the school’s amount of students increase, but funding would as well.
ccr: i dont get that. one could make a better argument by adding "state" to a school's name that it could get student increase and more funding.
5. “I always thought dropping the ‘state’ would be beneficial. I talked to students and alumni about it, and just about all of them gave me a positive response.”
ccr: do most people on this forum agree they like weber univ better than weber state univ? i would think not. but then again ive never asked anyone this question before. it is an interesting question. i am interested to know of a survey or poll.
6. Hall found that many schools that are not named after their states have dropped “state” from their name and have had good results.
ccr: there are still many more that have not removed "state" from their name. i do not agree with this point but i do not think it is a reason for us to change our name. but you could point out we have had a lot of name changes over the years. this was not discussed in the article.
weber normal college
weber college
weber state college
weber state university
7. Somebody out of state might see Weber State and categorize it with a lot of the other local colleges. But Weber University, even with a small change over time, could become anything with 10 or 15 years
ccr: what does this mean? we dont want to be compared to utah, usu, uvu? does this mean would be pretending to have become a private school and with the name change we could become more prestigious over time?
8. In how the school is portrayed with having the ‘state’ in the name, I believe it will have an impact on the sports teams, because people will view us not just as a small program without the ‘state’ in the name.”
ccr: i will go ahead and make the obvious rebuttal.
LSU
ohio state
boise state
florida state
penn state
michigan state
colorado state
utah state
9. Other schools have done it. Couple schools that I found were Troy, North Texas, Memphis, a couple schools back east.
ccr: minus john calipary's time at memphis, those are not schools weber should look to for future goals or aspiriations.
10. There is a really strong upside there as far as the potential to get a lot more private donations.”
ccr: there is no reason to think this. in fact, i think you could make a stronger arguement to change a school's name from "something univ" to "something state univ".
Overall i thought it was an intersting article as it made me write this long post about it. personally, i like the current name and dont really like the sound of the proposed name change. i did also enjoy the conclusion of the article which is pasted below. i am a big fan of anyone that loves weber and wants to see it move forward to bigger and better things.

Although there has been no official talk about actually changing the university’s name, it has been discussed, and Hall said it is something WSU students should think about.
“We’re great, but we could be even better,” he said during the student senate meeting. “My goal is to get the school to do some real research and to see this on a ballot. I would love to speak in front of a board of trustees or anyone else who may have a say.”
