signpost article about some students discussing the idea of changing our name from weber state univ to weber univ. i dont agree with any of the story; i dont think i would like the name.

the article's arguments as to why weber univ is better than weber state univ:

1. could help attract more potential students, as well as show that WSU is more than a commuter school.

catcat reponse: i cant think of a single reason why that could be the case. also, weber's purpose per the baord of regents is infact to be a commuter school. there is nothing wrong with that. you can be both. it doesnt have to be commuter only. examples of our mission - note the campuses around such as davis, roy....etc. did u know when complete, the davis campus will facilitate 12,000 students? pretty cool.

2. we won’t be mistaken as a community college or a smaller college. We will be known as a university.

ccr: why would we be mistaken as a junior college? university is already in the name. its not Weber CC or Weber JC or even Weber College. is there a 2 yr college with "state" in the name? Im struggling to think of one.

We are currently known as a univ had have been since 1991. As for "smaller college" what does that mean? If you mean athletics well we are a smaller college in our bball conference and having FCS is "smaller" than FBS.

3. The perceptions that Weber State University had could be greatly changed just by dropping the ‘state.’”

ccr: please provide a reason or example as to why this could be the case? i would just say students showing up to a game and having school pride would do the trick. usu has the most college plates in utah yet utah, uvu, weber and byu all have most students i believe. my point is usu fans love their school more than the rest or it could just be that usu doenst have the commuter aspect that weber, uvu, utah and byu have being large schools in the biggest cities. if you want college town atmosphere you go to usu or suu.

4. if WSU dropped the “state,” not only would the school’s amount of students increase, but funding would as well.

ccr: i dont get that. one could make a better argument by adding "state" to a school's name that it could get student increase and more funding.

5. “I always thought dropping the ‘state’ would be beneficial. I talked to students and alumni about it, and just about all of them gave me a positive response.”

ccr: do most people on this forum agree they like weber univ better than weber state univ? i would think not. but then again ive never asked anyone this question before. it is an interesting question. i am interested to know of a survey or poll.

6. Hall found that many schools that are not named after their states have dropped “state” from their name and have had good results.

ccr: there are still many more that have not removed "state" from their name. i do not agree with this point but i do not think it is a reason for us to change our name. but you could point out we have had a lot of name changes over the years. this was not discussed in the article.

weber normal college
weber college
weber state college
weber state university

7. Somebody out of state might see Weber State and categorize it with a lot of the other local colleges. But Weber University, even with a small change over time, could become anything with 10 or 15 years

ccr: what does this mean? we dont want to be compared to utah, usu, uvu? does this mean would be pretending to have become a private school and with the name change we could become more prestigious over time?

8. In how the school is portrayed with having the ‘state’ in the name, I believe it will have an impact on the sports teams, because people will view us not just as a small program without the ‘state’ in the name.”

ccr: i will go ahead and make the obvious rebuttal.

LSU
ohio state
boise state
florida state
penn state
michigan state
colorado state
utah state

9. Other schools have done it. Couple schools that I found were Troy, North Texas, Memphis, a couple schools back east.

ccr: minus john calipary's time at memphis, those are not schools weber should look to for future goals or aspiriations.

10. There is a really strong upside there as far as the potential to get a lot more private donations.”

ccr: there is no reason to think this. in fact, i think you could make a stronger arguement to change a school's name from "something univ" to "something state univ".

Overall i thought it was an intersting article as it made me write this long post about it. personally, i like the current name and dont really like the sound of the proposed name change. i did also enjoy the conclusion of the article which is pasted below. i am a big fan of anyone that loves weber and wants to see it move forward to bigger and better things.

"
Although there has been no official talk about actually changing the university’s name, it has been discussed, and Hall said it is something WSU students should think about.

“We’re great, but we could be even better,” he said during the student senate meeting. “My goal is to get the school to do some real research and to see this on a ballot. I would love to speak in front of a board of trustees or anyone else who may have a say.”

"

As an active alum and a long time contributor to the school, long time fan, etc I think a name change is idiotic. As catcat pointed out, none of the arguments listed by the student hold any water at all. There are plenty of University's out there that have the word state in them with no State affiliation ie. Wichita State. This has never been talked about in the Alumni Assoc. meetings. And I am sure that most would agree to keep the word "state" in the name of the University.

In the late 70s, some brain cramp wanted to change our mascot from a Wildcat to a Peacock. Can you imagine if both changes happened? I love this: The WU (Weber University) Cocks!!

Hmm,

Now that I think about it. I see where he is coming from.

There is a reason why UVU isn't UVSU and Purdue didn't pick the name Purdue State.

The schools listed by catcat are all named after their home state besides Boise which is named after a capital city and known as a football program that happens to have a college. Do you think Boise State would stand a chance if the University of Idaho wasn't 300 miles away? Even the schools named after their home state would drop "state" if the name wasn't already taken by another institution. Wouldn't Michigan State jump on the chance to be Michigan?

When you say the name of a college with state in it's name, not named after a state or major city, people sometimes categorize as a "you name it, insert name here________ state". To many people who don't know how great we are, this makes us piers with the following institutions which have on average 5 k students.

Williston State
Adams State
Minot State
Garden State
Dickinson State
Metro State
Prairie State
Columbus State
Savannah State
Bluefield State
Mayville State
Weber State
Bemidji State
Bowie State
Nichols State
Emporia State
Henderson State
Montclair State
Rogers State

There are hundreds of them; the list goes on and on. Almost everyone has a very small student population and makes little attempt to build a brand other than generic insert random name here ____ state university. Look these schools up, most of them are tiny.

Notice how Boise and Witchita are not on the list. This is because they are both named after major cities. Notice that no matter how many BCS games Boise goes to or Final Four appearances Witchita has, their name still carries little national, or even local, prestige.

By dropping state, when someone says "hey, checkout Weber's MBA program!" You actually process Weber in your mind as a one of a kind, unique institution with it's own brand. Suddenly our piers become the following:

Radford
Temple
Auburn
Langston
Purdue
Towson
Weber
Citadel
Clemson
Marshall
Troy
Oakland (Michigan)
Rutgers
Longwood
Miami (Ohio)
Winthrop
Lamar

Notice how even the universities you have never heard of at least process in your mind as a one of a kind institution and not generic state university. Everyone of these schools is public, and as a whole represent the pier institutions of Weber in my opinion much more than the previous list.

Has anyone ever heard of Wayne State University? Well you should have, the school has a 300 million dollar endowment with almost 30,000 students. It has the largest, by head count, medical school in the nation.

What's the reason you have never heard of them? Because socially they often get categorized with the same group of colleges as Bemidji State with 4920 students as do we.

We change our name all the time. If we didn't we would still be named Weber Stake Academy. Historically, we have always been Weber, it's the state that was added to build credibility which is no longer needed.

Other programs are just like us, they want an attractive schedule that isn't full of "random" garbage teams that are an embarrassment to play, let alone lose to on the road. It's not terribly embarrassing to lose @ Mercer, Bellmont, Davidson, Gonzaga or Depaul. These programs actually have individual identities, besides random state university. But could you imagine losing @ Mercer State, or Bellmont State? People would say, "why the hell are we losing to crappy random teams or even playing them?"

Let's wake up and face it, fans don't get any more excited when the schedule says Webber State than they do when it says Nicoles State. It's just a random noname game to them. Programs want to play road games that are sexy. Mid or high major teams and fans think, "wow, great schedule but why are we playing @Webber State. Wait where the hell is Webber State anyways?" Just like they would if they saw Minot State.

Now if you play at Lamar, Drexel, or Auburn (All programs we out attend and could be considered more successful than), no one bats an eye. Why?? Because these school/programs have an individual perceived identity. Schools that insert state in their name like we did in the 60's when it was cool, basically say, "hey guys, we are small and unknown but don't worry, we added state so atleast you know we are state funded and not online-for/profit. No need to research us and form an individual opinion, just group us with all the other 1000 random you-name-it state universities with 4,300 students." There are literally hundreds but we have 8 times the success/program support and student enrollment as 95% of them. Of course, obviously this doesn't apply if you are named after a major city or the state you are located in since people have heard of the location.

I have said it before and will say it again, we are WEber!!! Not Webber State or whatever. We are a proud, one of a kind program/university, with a long basketball tradition that deserves more respect than our name affords. A schedule which reads Southern Miss, @Weber, @ Purdue, @ NDSU looks much more exciting than Southern Miss, @ Weber State, @ Purdue, @NDSU. I can't process Webber State as anything more than a random schedule filler and I went there for hell sakes. Until we drop state and become the one of a kind university simply known as "Weber", we will always be no different than playing any other random fill in the blank state team. As a result, we will continue to lack the brand recognition which is required to build a sold nonconference schedule.

I'm curious to see if anyone's opinion has changed? We have considered this 22 years ago, as mentioned in this article:

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/317879/WEBER-WILL-NOT-DROP-STATE-FROM-ITS-NAME.html

Now is a good time to ask, are we happy with the experience at Weber State and the economic development the college has generated in the last 22 years, or do we want more? Also, are we happy with how we are perceived as an opponent in sports?

I don't see what we have to lose.

"It's not good to lose to a State that's not a State," said ESPN announcer, after Portland State beats Washington State.

This needs to be done so we can promote Weber University as a world class University and not just another local college. I really think Weber has a chance to be the Purdue,Auburn or Clemson of the conference and really take off.

I still have not given up on this, but I would like more support and an invite to speak in front of the powers that be. My academic paper is much more compelling, but here is a link to the article:
