Their posts outplayed our posts. Our guards out-rebounded our posts. But, in all fairness to our posts, they were not given a whole lot of minutes on the floor as the coaching staff once again decided to give extended minutes to KV and the guards. We got the snot kicked out of us on the offensive boards (and defensive boards, for that matter!). Things improved as soon as we switched into a zone defense, but Murrell's obvious dislike of this strategy came back to bite us in the derierre when she abandoned it during the crucial last minute of the game. With the Vikings clinging to a one point lead and 18 seconds remaining on the clock, WSU's Freshman point guard Johnson, drove the lane and was fouled. Those foul shots proved to be the game winners. It would be easy to blame our missed shots at the very end of the game for the loss but we should never have been in such a tight situation in the first place if our coaching staff would just utilize a defense that matches it's personnel. Play to it's strength.
Coach Murrell has got to decide if defense is a priority or not. PSU's frontcourt is not the team's strength, right now. Playing man-to-man defense just exposes our weakness and forces us to score a bunch of points to overcome our defensive liabilities. We were able to do this, at home, against ISU. But shooting >50% doesn't happen very often. Until Samms comes back, we need to play ZONE ZONE ZONE!!!
