I have always wondered why Universities not named after the state, have the word "State" in there name? Of course a small University with 2,500 students that nobody had ever heard of might benefit from having "State" in their name, because its a way to establish some small identity and avoid being confused with for-profit degree mills. I feel we are way beyond this.
It's widely known that when it comes to branding, shorter is better. Many people don't realize that there are many state universities that have elected not to have "State" officially in there name and others have actually dropped it from there name.
Troy, Auburn, Clemson, Lamar, Purdue, Utah Valley, OLD Dominion, Rutgers, Stony Brook, Binghamton, Temple and George Mason are all public Universities, that do not have "State" in there name.
I wonder how big of a deal dropping "State" from our name would be? I know we have changed our name quite a few times in our history. Troy and Memphis have both done so and apparently students at Middle Tennessee State are waging a campaign to get their name changed.

I have asked several people about this and I most have agreed that Weber University sounds better then Weber State University. I would love to know what you guys think about this?
