Weber University?

I have always wondered why Universities not named after the state, have the word "State" in there name? Of course a small University with 2,500 students that nobody had ever heard of might benefit from having "State" in their name, because its a way to establish some small identity and avoid being confused with for-profit degree mills. I feel we are way beyond this.
It's widely known that when it comes to branding, shorter is better. Many people don't realize that there are many state universities that have elected not to have "State" officially in there name and others have actually dropped it from there name.

Troy, Auburn, Clemson, Lamar, Purdue, Utah Valley, OLD Dominion, Rutgers, Stony Brook, Binghamton, Temple and George Mason are all public Universities, that do not have "State" in there name.

I wonder how big of a deal dropping "State" from our name would be? I know we have changed our name quite a few times in our history. Troy and Memphis have both done so and apparently students at Middle Tennessee State are waging a campaign to get their name changed.

I have asked several people about this and I most have agreed that Weber University sounds better then Weber State University. I would love to know what you guys think about this?

An interesting subject...

weber has had a number of name changes. someone let me know if the order is incorrect.

1. weber stake academy, 1889
2. weber college, 1964
3. weber state college
4. weber state university, 1990

it has only been since 1990 that we have been WSU which seems weird.

i think for a school like memphis it was a good change. Memphis State to Memphis Univ sounds good and its a big city that most are familiar with.

For us, personally I like WSU better than WU. weber is named after the county so it is unfamiliar name. Most still say webber. I like the state and being a state school is cool. I wonder if we changed to WU people might think we are some private school or some online college. lol

for UVU it made sense because UVSU is long and unnecessary and it sounds like utah state.

How about we just change the name altogether? Sojourner-Lillard University.
