Weber vs NAU part 2

All this talk about Weber vs UNC, and nothing about the game before Wildcats/Bears when Weber takes on Northern Arizona.

As Coach Rahe says, One Game at a time.

The Lumberjacks are deffinitely a better team than when we played them before, Cameron Jones is playing very well right now, as well as is the rest of the team. Weber cannot overlook the Lumberjacks, the Cats cant get caught looking past the Jacks to Saturdays game, the Lumberjacks are a team that can make them pay for it.

Here is to winning the FIRST game this weekend.

GO WILDCATS

NAU is becoming a very dangerous team.

They aren't gonna win the sky this season, but they have a team that is meshing right now, and will come back as a potential conference contender next season. They'd love to come into the dee and pull an upset.

NAU was getting hot winning 5 in a row, then their 2nd leading scorer broke his hand that was a big blow to the jacks. even still they are as we all know a well coached team and we all saw what almost happened in greeley on sunday.

This game is huge for several reasons. Obviously we need the win. Getting to 16-8 looks nice. Also Fridays game will carry over to the UNC game. With the win on Friday, more fans will come in Saturday because if the win on Friday. We need to win these two games straight up! Friday and Saturday are both huge games. Looking forward to both games!

Jones is averaging 22.7 points a game over the past 11 games, 19.8 per game in conference play, and 18.5 per game overall. He is second in the conference in both overall and conference points per game. So does Weber focus on slowing Jones, or let Jones get his points and focus on limiting the rest of the Jacks? With Platt out, NAU's only other double digit scorer is Johannsen at 11.0 per game. The Jacks are 8-6 when Jones is the team's high scorer, and 3-5 when he is not the team's high scorer. Looks like Weber better focus on slowing Jones. And, does this game have added incentive for Lillard, who could use the game to show Jones and everyone else he is the best player in the conference?

The Lumberjacks have been playing much better since their first meeting with Weber State. They've shown they're a bit improved on the road this year with 4 wins and a few other close games. Cameron Jones is having a great year. He doesn't play above the rim and is far from flashy but always seems to get 18-24 points per game. Apart from the whooping put on by the Grizzlies over the course of the last 10 minutes of that game, NAU's recent games have all been well played. Gabe Rogers and DeAngelo Jones have shown the ability to step up and have big scoring nights. That's the good.

The bad - free throw shooting is awful. Painful. Especially the post players. Turnovers are problematic at times. NAU's two point guards seem reasonably solid with the ball and have positive assist to turnover ratios on the season but neither are much of a scoring threat. Nick Larson - NAU's only senior - doesn't have gaudy numbers to speak of but seems to fit the role as their glue guy. The three point shooting the last few seasons hasn't been up to snuff compared to past teams. NAU will hit a few but it's not a primary weapon like in the past. It would have been nice to see what a healthy Eric Platt could've done this year (missed lots of time with shin splints before breaking his hand) but it wasn't to be.

Looking forward to tomorrow night on bigskytv.org.

GO Jacks!

Mt. Jack...I've got NAU pegged as contenders next season, if not before. They have really come along and under Adras will continue to. Its too bad that the good people of Flagstaff (I really like that area) don't come out and support the Jacks more. They have good solid teams, that always compete.

I really like the play of Rogers, he is a dark horse to get Freshman of the Year, in my opinion. Larsen is a tough player and I like the big, even though I just forgot his name (Johannson?). He is one of the best bigs in sky this year, to bad he can't shot FT's like Landry for Jack fans.

For Weber I think the Cats have got to do the same things that they did in the first contest. Weber has a lot of speed. They need to use it and run a lot. Get a bunch of buckets in transition. Also, put Session on Jones. Jones will have a really difficult time scoring with session around him the entire game. As always, the keys to victory for weber are:

1. Rebounding...limit the jacks second chance opportunities
2. The offense has to stay fluid. Good ball movement, hard screens, and getting to the hoop (drawing fouls and getting high percentage shots)
3. The CATS have to be the aggressor and come out playing D from the opening tip to the last buzzer.
4. Get the the FT line.

From NAU's site:

“We’re going to face two teams that are going to penetrate a lot, I would think,” said Head Coach Mike Adras of the weekend games against Weber State and Idaho State. “I don’t know why Weber would change their approach. They won pretty easily and it worked pretty well for them. You have to keep doing it until the other team stops you.”

The 25 point loss to Weber State was the largest to a Big Sky opponent since NAU lost at Portland State by 26 points during the 1999-00 season (101-75). It was the largest Big Sky Conference loss at home since the Lumberjacks lost to Weber State by 37 points (101-64) to conclude the 1995-96 season.

“They really attacked us well off the dribble,” said Adras of the last meeting. “Obviously that was their game plan, was to beat us off the dribble. They did that frequently, unfortunately.”

Wow! With Lillard and Session flying all over the court, stealing the ball, hitting threes, and throwing down nasty dunks, that was an exciting game. This could be the best duo Weber has had since Eddie and Harold were running the hardwood. Next year is going to be a very fun year with these two a year older and a year better. :D

imagine if they can replicate that play against unc!!!

I'll start out by saying I really hope that Weber State fans appreciate what they have. Lillard and Session look as if they could turn out to be special. Harold Arceneaux/Rodney Stuckey type, rarity in the Big Sky Conference kind of special.

Weber's team speed is stupendous and creates utter havoc on defense. If you beat Northern Colorado tonight it's smooth sailing to host the tournament.

The good: NAU didn't quit. Weber St didn't beat NAU by 25 this time around. Keeping the fouls to a minimum. Cameron Jones. All hope is not lost as it looks like the 5th and 6th position for the conference tourney are wide open still.

The bad: The turnovers....oh, the turnovers. NAU's two point guards - a true freshman and a jc transfer - had a tough game last night with limited points and lotsa turnovers. Going on a momentum-shifting big run at the start of the 2nd half only to give it right back to Weber with a big run of their own.

It was fun, though. Hope to see you Wildcats come Big Sky tourney time.

MTJack
