WEBER vs. PSU

What to expect this week... From what I have read or seen of the Vikings they have weapons and can move the ball. Unfortunately, for them, their defense looks to be fairly soft. UM was able to move the ball efficiently through the air and on the ground. However, UM was able to break open the game through the air with a mixture of 5-10 yard dumps and 10-15 yard slants and fades. Also, I think the Screen may also, finally, work against PSU. Trevyn should end the day with over 100 yards.

One thing that really worries me, is the slow start the Cats have been experiencing so far this season. The defense has given up a lot of points and yards in the first quarter. ISU got over half of their total yards and 14 of their points in the first quarter. Weber's coaches have got to do a better job of getting the team going. Wyoming and CSU both had good first quarters against the Cats. Also, the defense has got to be wary of the long pass. Weber has been burned three times in the last two games. PSU has a very strong offense.

DON'T FORGET, PSU was up 14-0 against Montana....and that says something. We are playing PSU at THEIR home field, and they would like nothing less than to beat us in front of their fans.

The long ball has haunted us so far this season, and I don't know why.....we just need the D line to get in quicker and create chaos so that the QB cannot launch the long bombs......

It should be a good game, but we should come out of this very easily with the 'W' IF everyone does their job!

GO WILDCATS!!!!

I agree with Wildcat 100, Weber should win this game pretty handily, that is, if everyone does their job. I think Weber needs to blitz more, and not put so much on the DL shoulders. Against CSU, Weber depended primarily on the DL to cause chaos in the backfield. Also "know your assignments," the LBs need to get their heads in the game quicker. They are doing well, but need to do better.

I agree with you, the LB's need to engage quicker. If we keep the same Defense as last year against PSU, we went with the 3-4, because of the deep drop by the QB. It would work this year if you had #95 at the Nose, he'd have the best shot at pressuring the QB as evidenced in Wyoming and CSU til he got hurt. If #95 didn't get in, he was drawing a double and sometime triple team block, enabling someone off the edge to release quicker. PSU might cause us to go back to a 4-3 to insure that we put 'some' pressure on the QB. If we leave him back there untouched, he'll eat up our secondary, and the LB's cannot keep up with the RB out of the backfield.

We need to be careful but not stupid, that's all. The best defense is a potent offense, time for Cameron and company to have a coming out party against Glanville's boys. GO WILDCATS!!!

I'm really worried about the defense getting off to a good start and then being consistent. Idaho State had almost 200 yards of offense in the first quarter. The D has got to start the game fired up! Also, the offense needs to be effective its first series of the halves.
I really hope that the rumors about Linehan are true and that he will be playing on Sat. One of the biggest problems, in my opinion, has been the lack of pressure on the QB, at times. As long as the D is getting to the QB then our defense is excellent, but if a QB has time he is able to eat up our secondary. Weber must put pressure on Hubel this week or he will eat us alive.

Using this week's Sagarin rating predictor scores, Weber will be favored by less than a field goal.

Go figure.

From The Sports Network:

No. 11 Weber State (1-2, 1-0) at Portland State (1-2, 0-1), 4:05 p.m.

The last time Portland State hosted Weber State in 2007, the two Big Sky teams combined for a NCAA record 141 points. The Wildcats prevailed 73-68 in 2007 and last season, kept the scoring low in a 31-21 win.

Payton Award candidates Cameron Higgins (831 yards passing, 67% completion rate, eight TDs, seven interceptions) and Trevyn Smith (347 yards rushing, 5.0 average, three TDs) anchor the explosive Wildcats' offense. All-American wide receiver Tim Toone (22 catches, 12.0 average, two TDs) adds to a Weber State unit that has averaged 416 total yards so far.

WSU's defense hasn't given up a plethora of points (23.3 average), but has allowed 373 total yards per contest. Taylor Sedillo (24 tackles, two tackles for loss) at linebacker and All-American safety Beau Hadley (16 tackles, two forced fumbles) have paced a defense that needs to make big plays against Portland State.

Portland State's offense revolves around the pass and quarterback Drew Hubel (947 yards passing, five TDs, five interceptions). Raymond Fry (19 catches, 15.9 average) is PSU's top wide receiver.

All-American fullback Bobby McClintock (112 yards rushing, 6.6 average) is the team's leading rusher, but has recorded just 17 carries.

The Viking's defense, like Weber State, allows plenty of yards (392 average), but has struggled keeping opponents' point totals down (33 average).

Linebackers Erik Pedersen (26 tackles, two tackles for loss) and Ryan Rau (19 tackles, four tackles for loss) have tried to improve a young Portland State defense, with solid efforts coming from safety Jordan Brown (17 tackles, two tackles for loss) and defensive tackle Jermaine Jacobs (16 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss).

Both these teams can score points, but Weber State is slightly better on defense and should survive this one.

WEBER STATE 38, PORTLAND STATE 24

I agree with Purpleforlife, I really would like to see the defense get off to a quick start and then stay tough throughout the entire game.

By the by, I'm trying to work out some type of viewing option somewhere on campus tomorrow. Is there another place where fans can watch the game? I'd like to get a projector if possible and put it on the big screen.
