Even though it felt like we hung on for the win, I liked the way we showed good patience on offense by crisply moving the ball around, and waiting for good open looks. Too often, in our past losses, we seem to rush things and force contested shots, ie yak up threes. We are always going to be shooting a lot of threes. That's who we are, and, when we're on, we can win a lot of games. The only time this team will dominate in the paint is against the Lewis and Clark's of the world. That's not to say we should abandon our post game. On the contrary, like a passing football team that keeps opposing defenses honest by sneaking in the occasional run, we should look to our posts for a little balance in our scoring. I hope we can build on this win and continue to focus on crisply executing our offense and spreading the ball around. I think being patient with our shot selection is the key.
Now, if we can just tweak our post defense a little. I'm no expert, by any means, but, from my humble perch, I've noticed that our posts are often out of position on defense. A pass comes in from the perimeter and more often than not, the pass is not contested effectively. Of course, our perimeter defense is not without blame part of the time. But, it seems that our posts are often not in front of their counterpart, the ball sails easily into their hands, they turn and put up a good shot. I think our posts need a little extra coaching in how to improve their footwork and their body positioning in order to gain an advantage and stop those easy shots.
