Week 1 Grade

After week 1 I would rate the team an overall B-.

Offense started really slow before looking good in the 2nd half. I felt Barron played really well for a true freshman and made some really nice throws. Barron definitely looks the part of the QB of present and future!! The offensive line was spotty; they did well against the pass rush but with the exception of the big Josh Davis run they didn’t block well in the running game most of the time. The receivers all did well and the running backs looked explosive when they had decent blocking.

The defense was just okay from my perspective. We didn’t generate a consistent pass rush or stop the run very well, but we came up with stops/turnovers in key spots. The secondary was decent except I felt Collins (2) was beat multiple times and the long touchdown pass was atrocious because of poor tackling!! If ISU didn’t turn the ball over so much it would’ve been much closer but again Weber held at key moments.

Special teams were decent except for the penalties and the one muffed punt.

Overall a decent start against a team we should’ve knocked around so I’m happy. However, going forward there is much improvement to be made in my opinion with the offensive line, secondary, pass rush, and especially the penalties. This could be a truly great team and hopefully they keep improving every practice and week. Go Cats!!!

I’m probably an easier grader.

Offense: A- over 600 yards of offense. Barron threw over 300 yards with 4 TDs 0 interceptions. Rushing game broke some long runs as game went on. Couple of fumbles and a very slow start, but great overall. Kudos to Hammer for exposing mismatches in the secondary. There were a lot of penalties though.

Defense: B- The missed tackle on 70 yard TD was bad. They played soft coverage a while and Idaho State moved the ball for 400 yards of offense, but they forced the turnovers when needed.

Special Teams: C- Muffed punt and missed chip shot field goal.

Overall would be a B. They won big after a rusty 1st quarter. I would almost give a B+ for covering the spread on the road, but a lot of penalties and a couple of fumbles and some mistakes on special teams. First games can be tricky, but the Wildcats did what was needed while still having a lot to clean up on.

Offense A. The offense of the past two seasons never puts up anything close to 49 points tonight.

Defense B. Pass coverage not great 1st Q but pretty solid the rest of the way. Opposite for the Run defense, not great in the 2nd half. The timely forced turnovers were huge.

Special Teams C. Missed an easy FG, muffed a punt return.

Overall B. Not bad at all for a team that hadn't played in over 400 days.

Hooray, Hooray-great news today. Weber State finally has a quarterback! No, I correct myself, they have two quarterbacks that are better than anything we had last year. Bronson Barron has real talent. He moves adequately, he throws with authority and accuracy, especially accurate in the downfield passes. He is going to help Weber win a lot of games in the future. And Johnson ain't bad either.

My evaluation of the team is that they played almost perfectly for a quarter and a half, from the second half of the second quarter thru the third quarter. The first quarter can be explained with first game to adjust to new personnel and offense and a 435 day layoff since they last played. The fourth quarter was played with second and third stringers and we still managed to put points up. All in all, I think Weber will be better than any of Hill's teams to date.

Having said that, I see lots of room for a better performance in our next game with two weeks off to make adjustments and improvements before they play Davis. I think our starting cornerbacks left a lot to be desired, both Collins and Heckerd. Heckerd had to pass interference calls on him in the first quarter. And both cornerbacks let ISU complete a long pass for a touchdown. Lets hope that coaches get them more tuned up for Davis. And secondly, our offensive line could have run blocked better. Our OL coach will get that fixed I think.

All in all Weber scored more than I expected and could have easily put up high 50's to 60 something points on ISU. The defense wasn't quite up to Weber's recent standards but I bet they get better fast. ISU never sustained a drive of any significance but we have to learn to not give up the long passes. I have to give the ISU QB credit, he was very good in throwing the deep pass, very strong armed guy. Weber is good and I predict that they have the depth and quality to take them all the way this year. Did you see that North Dakota State got hammered yesterday?

10 ranked teams lost yesterday, including 6 of the top 12 and the 1 (NDSU) and 3 (SDSU) ranked teams. Expect Weber to be ranked 2 behind JMU, with an outside shot at 1.
