Recap/Thoughts
The Hornets were on the road at Portland State and lost 29-20 as this season just went from utter disappointment to complete embarrassment. The game wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated as PSU would have won by at least 30 had they not shot themselves in the foot with penalties or gift wrapped 14 points for the Hornets. Aside from the defense doing a solid job at slowing down the Viking running attack, the performance was pretty pathetic. The offense was nonexistent and Sperbeck and the coaches were completely outcoached. The wheels have completely fallen off of the Hornet band wagon and this team is in complete regression.
Offense
The offense was nonexistent. They couldn’t move the ball at all and the play calling was questionable at best as Fleming looked terrible. Fleming was off on most of his throws and his legs were the only thing that kept a few Hornet drives alive. The Viking defense was always a step ahead in this one was the Hornet offense didn’t even look as if they cared. Game stats:
- • Fleming: 19 of 30 for 129 yards, 1 INT, 78 rushing yards on 13 carries, 2 TD’s
• Safron: 0 of 2 for 0 yards
• Hilliard: 5 carries for 58 yards
• McCowan: 5 carries for 33 yards
• Croxdale: 4 carries for 9 yards, 1 rec for -5 yards
• Reed: Nothing. I’m not sure if he played.
• Norrise: 6 catches for 27 yards
• Howard: 4 recs for 45 yards
• Carter: 3 recs for 35 yards
• Hendershott: 3 recs for 14 yards
• Chastain: 1 rec for 10 yards
• Maciel: 1 rec for 3 yards
• OL: 4 sacks allowed
• TOP: 27:27
Horrible performance by this offensive unit. PSU’s defense did a great job at containing the Hornets and the Hornets didn’t move the ball much until late in the game when it was already out of hand. Passing seemed to be a complete struggle and Sperbeck failed to take many shots deep down the field to stretch the defense. 3 bubble screen passes in a row almost caused WR Carter to almost get his head ripped off as the play calling was extremely predictable. Safron saw one series of play and was benched after nearly throwing an INT. Hilliard was completely quiet except for a 49 yard run that the Hornets failed to capitalize on. Why Hilliard only got 5 touches in this game is beyond me. Croxdale saw a lot of snaps and was largely ineffective. Sperbeck was quick to abandon the running game and rely on a QB who hadn’t played in 2 weeks. This offense wasn’t ready for this game and the coaches were clueless when it came to making in-game adjustments. The offensive performance was a complete embarrassment.
Defense
Aside from a couple of runs that went for scores, the Hornet defense did a solid job at containing the run. They held PSU to less than 200 rushing yards which is something no many teams can say. The pass defense was another matter. The secondary made PSU look like a perennial passing power as no one could defend WR Monahan with Odiase out with injury. Game stats:
- • Rushing Allowed: 150 yards on 48 attempts (3.1 ypr), 2 TD’s
• Passing Allowed: 12/25 for 271 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
• Badger: 9 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s
• Larche: 8 tackles
• Davis: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
• Smith: 4 tackles
• Coleman: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
• McMahon: 4 tackles
• Fernandez: 4 tackles
• Nash: 3 tackles, 2 TFL’s
• White: 3 tackles
• Monson: 2 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD
The Hornets did a good job at forcing 3rd and long…and then did a terrible job at forcing a punt. The Hornets continued to blitz themselves out of plays and the DL did a terrible job at containing Kavanaugh. They came close to sacking him multiple times but came up with nothing more than a whiff on too many occasions. I believe Odiase was out again so CB Marquese Smith got completely abused by Monahan all game long as he racked up catch after catch. The defense did force PSU into many FG’s and even with their inability to force punts; this unit did keep the Hornets in this game. Monson had an athletic pick six off of a pass that went off a PSU WR’s hands. The defense also recovers a fumble on the PSU 1 yard line that came from a snap that went over the head of Kavanaugh. All in all the Hornet D was responsible for 14 of the 20 points.
Special Teams
The lack of a kicking game left some more points off the board again as Sperbeck opted to go for 2 instead of PAT’s after every TD. This cost the Hornets 1 point. Also the Hornets had a couple of drives stall that could have led to a couple FG’s if there was a capable kicker on the roster. The lack if faith in Diniz to even make a PAT is pretty telling. I think Diniz still handled the kickoff duties, if it weren’t for that I think he would be shown the door. Hendershott had a couple of nice kick returns; other than that it wasn’t a good game for the ST units.
- • S. Heath: 8 punts for a 35.4 ypp avg. 2 Inside 20
• Kick Coverage: Allowed 123 yards on 3 returns (41.06 ypr)
• Punt Coverage: Allowed 104 yards on 3 returns (3.3 ypr)
• Diniz: 0/0 PAT’s, 0/0 FG’s
• Hendershott: 6 kr’s for 76 yards (12.7 ypr)
Sperbeck needs to find a kicker for next season. It should be pretty high up on the priority list. Going for 2 after every touchdown is no way to win games and they need a kicker who can get points when Hornet drives stall in scoring position.
Injuries
More Hornets went down this week. Carter almost had his head ripped off on one of the telegraphed WR bubbled screen passes. DL Castro went down with a leg injury. I think he walked off and should be ok. A few other Hornets were shaken up but I don’t think any serious injuries were sustained. I could be wrong.

The Hornets are in trouble as the offense continues to struggle to put up points. There is a good possibility this team loses out. The Hornets do have both games at home so maybe they can get it together but at this point in the season I have a hard time seeing that happen. The bottom line is it is not looking good at all and the rumblings about the program are sure to grow.
Go Hornets!
