Week 10: vs Northern Colorado

Thanks for getting this started OH. Been a long busy week for me, wasn’t able to get anything up.

Northern Colorado comes in with a 2-5 (1-4 BSC) record and on a 4-game losing streak. The Bears are a last second FG over ISU away from having no D1 wins this season. UNC has yet to win a road game this season.

Offensively UNC lines up in various single back formations typically with 3 receivers. UNC lost its starting QB a few weeks ago and rely on Regan (51/112, 736 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT) to lead the offense. He’s a scrappy QB that extends plays with his legs. The UNC OL is very young and has given up about 2 sacks a game. Their play calling is pretty run-pass balanced. UNC’s leading rusher is Riek (114 car, 404 yds, 6 TD) who is a decent back but isn’t going to break a big play. In the passing game, WR Wesley (40 rec, 705 yds, 3 TD) is a speedster that is a deep threat. The rest of the WRs/TEs have similar production and can make plays when open.

Defensively the Bears line up in a 4-3 and aren’t very good up front (last in the BSC in rush defense, 252 ypg). They give up 35 points a game and are last in the BSC in total defense (505 ypg). The UNC secondary is decent (8 INTs) and are near the top in the BSC in PBUs (28).

UNC has an above average kicker in Root that is 75% on the year and has range. Glau is averaging just under 40 yards a punt and lands 25% of them inside the 20.

The Hornet defense should dominate UNC and the DL should be able to get into the backfield early and often. Weather could be a factor as rain is predicted for earlier in the day. Hornets have a stronger ground game so rain should favor the home team. Hornets should win this regardless of who starts at QB, but I think this game will be closer than it should be. Hornets by 10, rain keeps attendance under 8k.

Hornetsports preview.

Interesting game, started fast, looked really flat rest of first half. 2nd half domination. Need to beat Cal Poly next week. Can not have a let down on the road

Word is Thomson practiced this week

He obviously didn't play today, but what's the deal? What is the extent of his injury and will he be back at all this season?? I don't think they can win either of the next two without him. Ale may eventually develop into a fair QB, but the offense is handicapped with him at the helm right now.

Not sure I agree they can't win without him, they just put up 50pts. Cal Poly just won their first game vs Portland State. Who has not won a game yet. Hornets should win! Davis not sure. They have a really good WR

Hornets dominated the 2nd half and roll to a 50-21 win. Crazily enough it was only an 8 point game with 10 minutes left in the 4th. The wheels really fell off for UNC at the end.

Defense gave up a few big plays in the 2nd quarter that let UNC take a lead, but brought the pressure and really tightened the screws in the 2nd half. When it was all said and done the Hornets forced 3 TOs including a pick 6 and had 6 sacks, most of which came late in the game.

Offensive game plan was as conservative and boring as possible. The first couple of drives comprised of 15 straight runs with the first pass from Ale being a TD to Rucker in the back of the endzone. The Hornet OL eventually wore out the UNC front and they just chewed up the clock. The Hornet RBs got a ton of carries with Dotson (16 car, 124 yds, 2 TD) having the biggest impact. Ale (13/21, 137 yds, 2 TD) had an ok night, but held onto the ball too long a couple of times that resulted in sacks (one being a sack fumble that set up UNC’s go ahead TD). UNC loaded the box that left single coverage on Lindsey, was hoping Wulff would have let Ale take a couple shots down the field given that favorable situation.

Hornets suffered a couple of injuries. Hennie got smashed at the end of the 1st half and didn’t return. Gable got his leg rolled up on late in the 4th while blocking on the TD pass to Robinson.

Hornets took care of an easy opponent at home, but next week the Hornets hit the road to face a CP team that has found an offense behind its 2nd string QB.

I'm assuming he's out for the season. Not having the read-option available and not having confidence in Ale's passing ability is going to be a lot to overcome for this offense he rest of the way.

More doom and gloom from the guy who always knows more than the coaching staff and said we would only win by 10 points last week.

It was an 8 point game with 10 minutes left in the game...

I guess I didn't realize you were predicting the "10 minutes left in the game" score. You were wrong by multiple touchdowns whether your gargantuan ego will allow you to admit it or not.

You should stick to predicting attendance numbers.

So you think throwing a 50/50 ball to a WR that is being defended by a DB half is size is a bad idea. Got it.

OMG seriously? You are the most negative person on the board. Did you discuss the turnovers the defense got that lead to points? Put those in and by my count that adds 17 points and the game would have been much closer.

OSH why don't you out yourself so we know what era this vitriolic hate filled rhetoric is coming from?

Thomson was warming up in pre game, came out in street clothes later. Also Huard calls plays, according to preseason interviews with Sears. So Wulff As OC is just a title. I kind of like the boring offensive game plan as long as the Hornets are winning.

Boring will win games against awful teams like UND and UNC. Boring will be a toss up at CP next week as that plays into CPs strengths. Boring won't get it done in the Causeway.

Cal Poly Offense is horrendous, top back is out for year and they have local QB Jake Jeffery currently starting,

337 yards rushing is pretty good, they kept two safeties back the whole game, even when they brought in more o Lineman. Looks like Hornets took what they gave them

Ale needs to run like Thomson did, he is not a pocket passer. Nice job on the running game overall by the backs, but I agree with SDH, it will need to be a balanced attack from here on out. Poly has a better run defense than Sac, so they could shut that option down early. Davis takes it to a whole new level when we play them, we might as well view them as an FBS opponent and the same intensity.

Gotta get past Poly first.

Although not as effective as teams in the recent past, I would hardly call the Cal Poly offense horrendous. They did manage to rush for 400 yards last week and despite being 1-8 they actually lead the conference in rushing. A better term would probably be predictable.

First time saying this in awhile, but Sac State just out talented Northern Colorado. Too much depth coming in waves, they were able to wear them down.

The broadcasters on Pluto were very complimentary of the Hornets and the future.
