Week 11 - Sac State at Northern Arizona

38-34 Hornet win. Wow. Hornets pull off the impossible and steal a win in Flagstaff. Like everyone else, I thought this game was in the books. Never in a million years could I imagine such a comeback happening with so little time left.

Dunniway was going to force this throw to Parker in traffic, but changed his mind mid-throw and hit Williams instead. Wow.

Loads of mistakes by the Hornets throughout this game. Penalties, turnovers, and on the game management side didn't help the cause today. Defense had their worst game of the season. They held Cookus to a meager 186 yards but could not stop Logan (210 yards) from breaking the big plays.

Fortunately none of that mattered and the Hornet pulled off the impossible. :o

There were parts of that game that were difficult to watch...but not the finish!
TBH when we went down 10, I went and sat down at my desk and started to work, thought I would check the score ands we had just scored and flipped it back on to see the onsides kick and the end of the game. Plenty to work on this week as Idalol is tough at home, but nice come back win.

Hope we can get Thomson back. And the team needs to stop reading the press about themselves, just keep grinding and working hard.

TBH the biggest surprise of the game was the Hornets inability to stop the run. Something they’ve been really good at most the season. The past 2 games they’ve slipped a lot in that regard. WSU was a bit understandable, but I didn’t think it’d happen against NAU.

Things evolved in this game where it was later easy to point to Sac State hurting themselves.

And assume the players might know that.

That being said, the team took it one play and one situation at a time
to WIN.

Congrats to our 2019 Sac State football team for what they accomplished in Flagstaff, a tough place historically for all Sac State sports teams to win.

And it is almost mid November

And we are 5-1 in the top FCS conference in the nation

and 7-3 overall.

With two huge games left in the regular season.

First off, that has to be the greatest comeback in Hornet history. Love the resiliency in this group.

But I have to ask, how do we give up 3 scores of over 50 yeads to NAU? Combined with our showing against Weber, this is starting to be a bad trend. Is it scheme? Are teams figuring us out? Do we have some personal/injury issues?

I've noticed we have been switching up our starting DBs the last couple of games. Wonder if that is injury or execution related. Also noticed that Hawkins left early holding his hand/wrist/finger, and did not return. Not good - we need him.

We need to get out of this "break-but-don't-bend" pattern we are on, or we're going to have to score 50 to win our last 2 games. Which is fine with me, a W is a W, but we need to right this ship if we want to make a run in the playoffs.

The defensive play is concerning, and I think it has a lot to do with injuries. Garcia was hurt earlier in the year and I believe he was listed as a starter, and of course Hawkins is our leading tackler so that is a big loss as well. So that's 2 starting LBs potentially out of the mix due to injuries.

Besides Thompson out, I'd say the slide more concerning is Defensive in nature.
We were dominate the first five games, now people are clipping 200+ running yds a game on the same DL. Same with pressure on the QB.

At 7-3, I am nitpicking, but we have to reinvigorate the D for a strong push.

Yes, we have to "reinvigorate the D," but I'm not so sure that's necessary to get past Idalol and the Manure Pile. DEFINITELY for whoever is on tap for the playoffs, though, and it's always better to do something sooner rather than later, but I think we can thump the next two on the list as is....
