Week 2 - Sac State @ Arizona State

The Hornets head to Tempe to face Arizona State (1-0, picked to finish 3rd in the Pac12 South) for a Friday night game in the desert. The Sun Devils crushed Kent State (picked to finish 4th in the MAC East) at home last week 30-7.

Offensively ASU spreads the ball out and gets the ball in open field to their playmakers. At QB, true freshman Jayden Daniels (15/24, 284 yd, 2 TDs, 12 car for 13 yds, 1 TD) got the nod to lead the offense this season. Daniels can extend plays with his feet and the highlights I saw showed some read-option in the mix for this offense. Daniels is surrounded by playmakers in RB Eno Benjamin (22 car fpr 102 yds, 3 rec for 32 yds, 1 TD) and WR Brandon Aiyuk (4 rec for 140 yds, 1 TD). The Sun Devil OL is loaded with size and experience (3 SRs, 2 JRs) but they did give up 5 sacks last week.

Defensively, ASU was a top defense in FBS in 2018 and kept Kent State in check all game save a garbage time TD. Kent only managed 200 yards of offense and forced 2 fumbles. It looks like ASU runs a 3 man front based on the 2-deep and return 4 of their top 5 tacklers from last season which includes LBs Merlin Robertson (7 tak) and Darien Butler (6 tak).

This will be a tough game for the Hornets as they face one of the top defenses in FBS. It’s not any easier on the other side of the ball as the Sun Devils are loaded with playmakers. We’ll see how this team responds to the challenge. I’ve got a Hornet loss in this one.

Look who got one vote in the official STATS FCS Top 25! Just 517 points away from 25th place and 3,982 points to catch North Dakota State. LOL

We can only hope that Coach Taylor's time at Utah, specifically last season when Herm Edwards took over the Sun Devils, helps him in game planning against them.

If the Hornets can keep the game within in 28, I'd consider that a success. Anything better than that is a win!

Hopefully the Hornets can muster some big plays on offense and score some points. Cause I can't really see them stopping the ASU offense all that often.

48-24?? I wouldn't be super disappointed by a performance like that.

Would love to see that score! Let’s hope for new injuries and that the Taylor Offense can show a little “spark”, even against ASU!

I don't think there is a chance here, perhaps catch them a few time like SOU caught us on deep fades for TD's. Just hope we don't sustain injuries and broken confidence going into UNC.

Game notes are posted. Looks like the same 2-deep as last week.

Think the "ors" at Obinna's spot are to keep opponents guessing with him coming back from injury - or perhaps it really will be the rotation we saw in Week 1, and not some master plan to unleash him in BSC play.

I think we'll bounce in and out of the "Receiving Votes" section a couple times this year. I'm counting on some devastating losses (to boot us out), and a surprise win or two (EWU? UM? UCD) that will get some media noob's attention and they'll throw a vote our way, regardless of our record...

The consolidated list of predictions is fairly reasonable, but the video is hilariously dismissive. I didn't expect Hornet victories in 2011 and 2012 against Pac-12 foes, maybe they'll at least hit on some big plays and put a scare into those tools so they will remember who we are!

While I think a win is POSSIBLE here, by no means do I expect ASU to beat us like we beat SOU. I think this will be a solid "close loss" that would look good in front of the committee should we have the breakout season that I seem to be the only one expecting.

Yes, I'm STILL banking on a big win at Fresneck....

I don't expect the same to happen tonight, but still fun to recall Sac's MBB win over ASU in 2015. New Sun Devil coach Bobby Hurley didn't enjoy that "cupcake".

Wishing I could watch at home tonight but I get to work. Thank goodness for smartphones and streaming radio! (And DVRs to watch it later on!)

Kadeezy trolling the ASU board like it's 2012.

Hornets had a hell of a first half and trail 3-0 at half, but are winning the yardage battle 131 to 78. Defense is playing out of their minds. Offense has moved the ball, WR need to pick it up though and help Thomson out. A couple of drops, an they are getting the RBs killed on the screens with missed blocks. Looks like Dotson took a shot in the last 1st half possession and was getting looked at by a trainer on the bench.

19-7 Final, Hornet loss. Damn good defensive showing, good pressure and they stopped the ASU rushing attack. Hornets gave up a TD (blown coverage) on a 3rd and long that would have given them the ball and a shot at the win with about 4 minutes to go. Offense came alive late and got a TD. Didn't like how the offense abandoned the run in the 2nd half but they made some plays late.

Perkinson went down with a knee injury but walked off. Hopefully he is ok. All things considered we get out of Tempe with a good showing, minimal injures and a check to cash. I'll take it. If the Hornet D plays this tough week in and week out this team will win plenty of games this year.
