Week 4: Sac State vs Menlo

Menlo (1-2, 0-0) comes into Sac off of a road win. Menlo was crushed by Southern Oregon (remember those guys?) the week prior. Aside from that there isn’t a whole lot to be found on these guys. Their website if pretty awful and there wasn’t much info to be found on the interwebs.

Menlo stats: http://menloathletics.com/stats/2014-15/Football/TeamSeasonStats9-6-14.htm

I couldn’t find any game notes so I have no idea what Menlo runs out of on either side of the ball. Menlo averages 334 ypg on offense and allows 512 ypg on defense. A lot of different players have rushing attempts and receptions, and they have played 3 different quarterbacks. Their offensive line has no one over 300 pounds. Menlo’s defensive line has no one over 285 pounds and their leading tackler has 28 tackles 3 games into the season.

This game should be total annihilation and an easy win for the Hornets. Hopefully the Hornets end this one quick and Sears empties the bench early in the 3rd quarter. If this game is even remotely close then Hornet fans can keep their heads in the sand.

Go Hornets!!!

The win was at recent D-II call-up Simon Fraser, the first Canadian school in the NCAA.

I thought Menlo was D-III, but apparently, they're NAIA, and not a very good one at that. It seems like they're playing the NAIA version of a bodybag schedule. SOU is one of those NAIA/NCAA D-II crossovers, as are Dixie State (10/25) and Azusa Pacific (11/15). But to get your butts beat AT HOME and win on the road is a VERY easy way to lose your fanbase. Menlo better get that fixed QUICK.

Just not so quick as to get a win this week.

Menlo is an 87 year old college with a grand total of 750 students with a full athletic program. The entire y student body, faculty and then some would fit into Hornet Gym. The first time the Hornets and Oaks are meeting in football. Guessing the Oaks are pumped to come to the big campus up the road with 30,000 students.

Go Hornets!!!

Have to agree with SD on this....shouldn't and can't be close.

This is a week to clean up all the mistakes we made in the first few games then get our 2's and 3's in to give them reps and get the 1's rested for conference play.

Go Hornets!!!

If the Hornets can't draw 7,000 for Weber State, I don't see us bringing in more than that for Menlo even if there is a fireworks show after the game; I'm betting it's around 5,000 - I'm passing this one up too.
Maybe our baseball coach got this game for us, since he's a graduate of Menlo.

Odd that people who care enough about the program to participate on this board pick and choose what home games to attend, (or don't attend at all) then criticize the attendance.

Last week the attendance was low, because of the, holy bowl, hot weather, and Weber State doesn't travel good. I expect a crow of 9,999. Also I will be there with my kid.

Tuned in just in time for a WR reverse pass that set up a Menlo TD late in the 3rd qtr. Pathetic to think this defense is not disciplined enough to not get burned by a WR/RB toss pass. :ohno:

Hennie just took one to the house. :thumb:

45-14 End of 3rd.

Sears empties the bench in the 4th. Hornets recover a muffed punt and Kniffin leads a drive for a TD. 52-14 late 4th.

"Is the pinkies up a new thing for the Hornets?" J Ross. Yeah only new since like 2006. :dunce: :ohno:

Pailake Aiono done for 6 weeks, Nick Payne done for the season.

Kellermann pounds one in. 59-14 late 4th. Bench players are cleaning house.

Game ends on an INT. Hornets go 3-1, 1st time since 1999. 59-14 final.
15 penalties by the Hornets. :ohno:

Congrats to our Hornets for a huge win and a 3-1 start to our season.

164 points in 4 games. Amazing!!

8 different players scoring touchdowns tonight. That is a TEAM!!

Best of luck at Idaho State next Saturday in the Big Sky opener.

Have a great week of practice and preparation . Behind u all the way .

Go Sac State!!!!

Overall the Hornets did what they were supposed to do. Offense went down and scored. A lot of different players played. Always wonder about delay of games especially since we do not really huddle. Will need to put some points up vs. Idaho State, they are better than when we last played them.

Defense does well, got the turnovers. Menlo was able to move ball very little. Again a lot of different players were playing.

Special Teams: KO coverage got a little better. Big return to the house was good, punt coverage was good. Special teams unit has gotten a turnover every game this year. Something had to be said about that.cornish hits another FG. The bad punt snap looked like it was going to be a fake? If it wasn't that was the worse snap ever.

15 Penalties. Number one thing that needs to be fixed or we will lose a tight game somewhere down the line.

Was hoping to watch the replay on VOD but it doesn’t look like it’s up. Don’t have anything else to add as OH23 covered it. No breakdown this week, everyone gets an A as they did what they needed to do against inferior competition. Good to see special teams continue to make a difference. The Hornets have some good momentum as they head into BSC play.

Good effort last night by the Hornets! I think that they took advantage of the opportunities that this type of game is supposed to provide. I was disappointed with the number of penalties, hopefully they can clean it up or it will cost us down the line. Great to see a lot of the reserves get to play and do well. I'm sorry that McDade didn't get at least one series to see what he can do.

I was impressed with the enthusiastic support the starters gave the reserves from the sideline. This team seems to be very close and supportive of each other. It's great to have players of such good character and mentality, they are easy to root for. Coach Sears and staff have done an excellent job keeping this team together after all the off season distractions which could have been a disaster for the program. I don't know what he is doing but the players seem to have bought in, the team looks more unified than ever!

One thing I noticed watching the end of the game is that the quality of the production is significantly improved from years past.

I agree, the resolution is much sharper. Must have gotten new camera's.
