Week 4 - @ UC Davis

Coach Hill (per Garside, SE): "We've still got a lot to clean up for us to be the team I know we can be...stupid mistakes...you clean those things up, we've got a chance to be a good team, a really good team."
It's conference play now, no better time to clean it up at the 1-2 UC Davis Aggies. Davis, predicted last in the BSC, was just beat 45-22 by Wyoming in Laramie.

BSC schedule makers may have done WSU a favor with this first scheduled conference game, followed with a BYE week, considering Wildcats are healing some typical injuries & still beset with some miscues & turn-overs (not the cherry or apple baked kind)! Wildcats showed some improvement vs. Sacramento St., but still leave fans frustrated with the mental muffs & poor kicking (field goals) game.

Predictions on the Weber State W/L's have held so far for me, with a W forecast here but not by a big margin...on the road & my confidence is diminishing. 24-17 Wildcats, win #2. :)

UC Davis might be down to their 3rd string QB for the game Saturday, their starter was taken off the field Saturday on a stretcher with a leg injury in the 4th quarter, the 2nd string QB has been out with an injury.

I don't know anything about UC-D this year but I do find it very intriguing that on the official WSU football roster there have been several additions this morning. http://www.weberstatesports.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=8600&SPID=3468&SPSID=39323

Would Jordan Preator be eligible this season? or next?

I hope he should be able to go right away. Would really help out immediately. Our DB's and Safety's are really banged up. Cool that he decided to come to Weber. I'm not sure, but I think his brother is currently injured. Then again, who knows. We really never get much of a report. Also, Sam Liaga and Luke Latteier are both on the roster as RS Fresh. Latteier participated in Spring Ball and had a decent spring and Liaga verbally committed to Weber in 15' before he graduated that spring. He never got an offer from these schools, but was receiving interest from Some PAC-12 and MW Schools.

So, I have a thought. Helam Heimuli doesn't seem to be getting a lot of time as a SR. Why not turn him around and see if he can play DE or maybe even LB. We are thin at those positions. Maybe also play Brady May at LB and have Heimuli play DE. There is talent on the offensive side of the ball that isn't getting a shot. Most of those guys have played both sides in their careers.

The key to this game is who's defense shows up to play, and who's makes the least mistakes.

Both offenses should be able to move the ball, UC Davis' defense is susceptible to the run, (ours is too). But we have seen "improvements" in the passing game and our own running game is solid. If we can limit turnovers we can walk out of Davis with a win. It would really be nice to go into our bye and then two game home stand with another win.

Over on the Davis board they are predicting an easy win for them. Thier only concern seems to be our QB. They fear that Clarks mobility may expose their D. Their weaknesses on D sound very similar to ours. This could be a very interesting game. :coffee:

To me this game could go either way. I definitely think we have the edge. We are deeper and have more athletes. However, it is all about game preparation. Weber definitely needs to be prepared for Scott and the Davis passing attack. I think we will continue to improve our run defense and force them to beat us through the air. I don't understand why a Davis fan thinks this is a gimmie. Southern Oregon really put a scare into them. Davis couldn't slow them down. The NAIA team put up more yards then Davis but turned the ball over 4 times. What has been keeping Davis in games has been timely TOs. If the Cats can hang onto the ball then I think Weber wins. If not, well, it'll be a long night in Davis.

I'm getting sick of hearing about the Sac St. game. Sac, could very likely get a win this week in the Potato Cellar. That was the best Jody Sears defense I have seen in 5 years of watching him. Sac can really limit the run and is forcing teams to throw the ball. No matter, Weber should have won 31-0. Does that mean that Weber is good? No, but better than advertised. Hopefully, Davis thinks that Weber isn't very good because of the Sac St.

Hey guys, Aggie fan here. Just wanted to clarify a few things. Our starting QB, Ben Scott, did go down with an injury late against Wyoming, but Coach Gould has stated this week that he is fine and will start on Saturday. In addition to Scott playing, we are getting starting LB and DL guys back from injuries this week. We definitely missed their presence against Wyoming. I'm not sure where you got Aggie fans saying that this was going to be an easy win. Just rechecked our thread and literally no one said that, most of us know there aren't any easy wins for us... being bad at football and everything. All anyone said was that they think the Ags can win if they stick to their game plan and limit turnovers.

Anyway, some Aggies you should watch for during the game are QB Ben Scott, RB Manu Luuga, WR Keelan Doss, WR Ramon Vargas, DE Zak Pettit, LB Russell Reeder. Who are some Wildcats we Aggie fans should be watching? Should be a fun game, it will be the first game with students back in Davis (they're on the quarter system so school just started). Hope some of you guys make it out there.

Is old Coach Biggs still hanging around the program at UC DAVIS? He was a great coach when Davis was a division 2 program but could never make the jump when Davis went to D1.

Yeah we still see Coach Biggs at games occasionally and he still shows up to practices and talks to the players. Always nice to see him around though, he's a great guy. I agree, he developed a unique game plan way back in the day and it served him very well in D2. Unfortunately, more teams started adopting similar game plans and it became tired and predictable in D1, not to mention his very localized recruiting strategies took a big hit once making the jump.

It was time for him to go by the time he retired, unfortunately the Gould era has been... not good.

IMO, these are two teams searching for an identity. On the surface, it would seem to be a toss up. This game could fall either way. A break hear or there could make all the difference. :coffee:

“You watch him on film and he can beat you with his arm. He’s the kind of guy that can beat you with his legs. He’s a lot faster than people think he is,” Gould said of Clark. “He’s another running back ... He’s got some good weapons to throw to as well. He’s well-coached. The guy doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. You can see the poise in this young man and how he just takes over the game.

  What film has he been watching? Gotta love coach speak!

shows everyone that Gould is an absolute idiot! WSU was playing one of the two bottom doormats of the Big SKY conference and could only score 7 points on offense in 58 minutes of play at home in perfect weather. Yea, Gould is right, Clark is a regular Steve Young out there on the field the way he uses his legs and arm....WTF are we talking about. This is nothing but a bunch of coaching speak. The coach is never going to say it like it is before the game so why listen to any of Gould's crap. He is just trying to justify his job because he is trying to tell people that he is playing against such a talented QB in Clark and that it will be such a tough game against WSU. It will be a tough game for the Aggies because they really suck. WSU wins 28-14 Goes 2-0 against two doormats and 0-2 against to real teams. WSU will get a week off and then get a chance to play a real team again. Then after the season Clark gets drafted into the NF because he is considered the next Steve Young because he is "faster than people think"
'?????????

Looking at 90 degrees at kickoff at Aggies

That will be nice and toasty. It's around 50 now and a high of 60 today here. Let's get two in a row and beat the Aggies. I think we should win by more than 14 but I think it will be closer to 17-14 (do we make a field goal today?) or 21-14.

Aggies can score points and will score a lot of points on WSU. Remember they put a lot of points on the board against Oregon and others. I am just hoping with Clark being our new Steve Young at QB that we should be able to out score them. Opening game day for the student body, they should be pretty trashed by the 6 pm kickoff here in Davis. Hopefully we see the freshman 30# from Oakland of WSU on the field this week at DB. He is the most talented DB we have and our DB have been getting burned so hopefully we see him on the field.
Who knows we just might see 89# Ross on the field at WR who is 6'4 instead of 3# at 5-8 Denby which they have him in the program at, I give him 5'7 at best.

Wow!

What a finish. Tied 35 - 35 we have the ball with less than a minute and a half to go. Have to punt with less than 30 seconds on the clock. They fumble the punt. We recover. One QB draw for about 7 yards. We spike the ball with 4 seconds to go, and kick a 35 yard field goal. We win 38-35. WOW!
