Week 6: Sac State vs Northern Colorado

The Hornets welcome a struggling UNC (1-4) team for Homecoming this week. UNC's lone win came in the opening week against a D2 opponent. Since then UNC has lost to a D2 opponent, got rolled by a respectable Wyoming team and a top 10 ranked UNI program followed by a competitive loss at home to SUU.

Offensively the Bears struggle to run the ball but can move the ball through the air. They have had multiple QB's see action but I am not sure if that is due to injury or coaching moves. Traditionally UNC has failed to field a good OL and I think that issue persists this season as well as UNC has allowed 13 sacks.

Defensively UNC is pretty solid and statistically rank in the top half of the BSC. They field some solid LBs and their DBs have snagged quite a few INTs. I expect UNC to take advantage of any Hornet offensive mistakes.

Special teams UNC has a comparably bad kicker as the Hornets. The UNC kickoff coverage has the second lowest net yardage and their net punting is pretty even with the Hornets. Which ever unit makes the least mistakes will be a key in this game.

UNC Stats: http://www.bigskyconf.com/custompages/football/2013/stats/nc.htm

The Hornets have never lost to UNC and if the Hornets come out focused and stay away from the stupid penalties and undisciplined play should win this game. The Hornets need to capitalize on the momentum gained in Ogden and take care of business this week.

Go Hornets!

SD, did you look at the two-deep?

Ezekiel Graham and Demetrius Warren are both out and a hobbled De'Jon Coleman is listed as the number one RB with FB Brandon Kellermann backing him up.

Who's ready for 50+ Safron throws!? :)

I didn’t see that. Where is Jeff Badger when you need him.

No RB should make this game interesting. I wonder if the coaches will consider going with an empty backfield and spread the field even more? Anyone know the status of the RBs? Is Coleman close to 100%?

Looks like Castro is out on the DL. Players are starting to drop like flies. :|

Five players were hurt at Weber. Time to test the depth of this team!

Depth is what is billed as the strength of this year's Hornet team so let's bring it on. Let's see some fireworks on the field to add to those slated for the haftime Homecoming show.

Go Hornets.

I think we'll see WR Carter at RB then, at least some of the time; I think he'll be okay there - he can play.

We have a history of having successful position transfers (Jeff Schultz, Scott Towne, Garrett White a couple of times). Especially if this is a short-time proposition, I think it could pose some match-up problems for opposing defenses....

I hope not. Carter has been making his plays at WR. Makes no sense to use that speed and lack of size for dives straight into the teeth of the defense.

I'd rather go 5 wide than see Carter in the background again trying to pass block a NT or DT or DE. He'll, I don't want him tackled by those guys either... Spread 'em!!!!

I wouldn't mind going empty as a tool in the arsenal...but I think we're asking for disaster if we predicate the entire offense on that while we're waiting for RB injuries to heal.

Besides, one of the nice things about moving a WR to the backfield is that backs tend to catch balls anyway; a screen or even just a swing pass can be a great way to get him out into space.

Hornets ruined Weber's homecoming last week and UNC can certainly do the same to the Hornets.

UNC is good against the run, our 1&2 are out so that means Hornets will have to pass to move the ball. As SDHornet said, for some reason this game is always close.

This will be a real test to see if the Hornets can maintain composure and execute goals, as they should win. Lot of guys banged up and some out, gotta keep turnovers eliminated and stupid penalties out.

Hopefully 10,000+

I think we win this one, and I think we can do so convincingly. It still just irks me that this will be a "catch-up" game IMHO. Had we beat Southern, we would be using this as padding for a good run, and playoff potential.

Eh, ignore me. I'm just being a Debbie downer. I'm still upset over the lack of progression.

Predictions

Attendance: 9,850
Score: Sac State 24 - UNC 21

We always seem to just squeak by UNC when the games should be a win by a comfortable margin. With injuries mounting up for us I have a hard time seeing this game being any different. As GCM said, eliminating turnovers and minimizing penalties (discipline) will be key here.

The Hornets took care of business as they should have. The offense looked good, Safron posted another solid game and the Hornets had 0 turnovers and 1 penalty. He was solid on his throws and made some good decisions (a few throw aways when nothing was there, good decisions on the read options). Sucks the Hornets had to burn Robinsons redshirt, but it looks like he will be a gamer. Kellermann looked solid pounding away between the tackles as well. The WRs and TEs posted solid games. A drop here and there was the only blemish from them.

Defense had some hiccups on some long throws but overall kept UNC in check. UNC never got anything going on the ground but the issue for the Hornets was that Lobato had too much time to throw. The front four struggled to get pressure on some key downs. It was nice to see the elimination of the stupid penalties.

Special teams was meh. Aguilar made a short FG but missed a PAT which ended his streak of perfection on those. The kickoff coverage gave up a lot of return yards. Punting and punt coverage remained solid.

Not bad on the attendance figure, SD. Actual was 9,012.

I think we all would have been as pessimistic about the score as you were, though. I'm happy that we got past that, though the poor second half may be an issue. We don't necessarily want to run up the score on people, but it seems that we DID take the foot off the gas, so to speak....

Very entertaining game last night! I was a little apprehensive going in considering the injuries especially to the running backs but I was pleasantly surprised. Robinson, Kellerman and Hikutini.looked great. Robinson was electric, probably is the fastest guy on the team. Kellerman is the first big effective big running back we've had since Hilliard. Hikutini is a big tough receiver. This team seems to have a lot of depth that was lacking in the past. We were told that this was a great recruiting class and it sure looked like it last night. The team has shown steady improvement on both sides of the ball over the last four games. The stupid undisciplined penalties have been cleaned up and the team seems to be playing with a renewed purpose.
Great to be 2-0 and first place in the BSC, looking forward to NAU!

Highlights...if you can see anything past the shaky camera...
