Week 9 - Sac State @ Cal Poly (Green and Gold Game Edition)!

NO LET DOWNS! We need to blow them out so bad so we can continue to bolstered our resume for election Sunday on Nov21st!

---side note, we need to bring back the "Green and Gold" mantra of this game between the only two FCS CSU's in California. I remember when Cal Poly would wear all gold uniforms playing at Hornet Stadium and we would wear green. This needs to be a thing again as Cal Poly and UCD recently reinstated the "Battle of the Horseshoes" game with a trophy. This a natural in state rival (they recruit pretty much the same players as we do) so it'd be fun to see it happen again!

...thoughts??

This is the type of matchup where I’m hopeful the new staff shows their superiority to past regimes in that they’ll be able to keep their team motivated, focused and sharp against an opponent the players might ordinarily overlook given the difference in success to this point in the season.

Can’t overlook anyone. Can’t get too high on yourself. Gotta go out and earn another 'W'. Nobody is going to give it to them. They gotta take it.

With regard to the uniforms, I’m ok with it. Doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other. I just want the Hornets to return home with another win. But carrying on cool traditions is rarely a bad thing.

Alright, it’s time to gain some ground while we’re significantly better.
Cal Poly leads the all time series 21-17. Winning 10 of the last 12. It’s time to catch up on all these series, one season at a time lol :coffee:

Week 9 - Sac State at Cal Poly

The 7th ranked Hornets (5-2, 3-0 BSC) head down to the central coast to take on a scrappy Cal Poly (2-5, 1-3 BSC) team that has had some tough, yet very competitive games in recent weeks. After opening up BSC play with a 24-21 win at Southern Utah, the Mustangs have had a couple of close games at home but have yet to find a win. CP followed up the SUU win with a 21 point 4th quarter to force overtime against Montana State but ultimately lost, 28-34. The Mustangs then got steamrolled by the dungpilers 24-48, and followed that up by giving up a late lead at home against North Dakota to fall 26-30 in the final 3 minutes of the game.

CaL Poly runs their triple option but they have been throwing the ball more this season than in the past 5 years. CP’s offense is currently ranked 59th/8th in FCS/BSC: 26.4 ppg (65th/8th), 395.3 ypg, 252.9 rush ypg (9th/1st), 142.4 pass ypg (116th/13th). Redshirt freshman QB Jalen Hamler (51/80, 955 yds, 9 TD, 4 INT, 145 car, 412 yds, 7 TD) runs the offense with FB Duy Tran-Sampson (151 car, 687 yds, 4 TD) getting most of the carries. WRs JJ Koski (30 rec, 634 yds, 4 TD) and Quentin Harrison (15 rec, 324 yds, 4 TD) are both averaging over 21 yards a catch.

Cal Poly’s 3-4 defense has struggled mightily this season. The Mustangs are currently ranked 111th/11th in FCS/BSC: 36.1 ppg (29th), 463.4 ypg, 188.3 rush ypg (88th/10th), 275.1 pass ypg (107th/10th). LB Matt Shotwell (61 tkl, 6 TFL, 1 INT) leads the defense in tackles. In addition to struggling to stop opposing offenses, the Mustang defense does not get many sacks (5 on the year) nor force many turnovers (6 on the year) which is worst in the BSC in both categories.

CP’s K Colton Theaker (6/10 FG, 23/23 PAT) has been streaky on field goals but rock solid on extra points. Their net punting numbers (35.4 ypp, 8th BSC) are average.

This week's matchup has trap game written all over it. Historically CP has dominated the Hornets since they joined the BSC, however this year the Hornets have a new look on both sides of the ball. The Hornets can’t overlook this scrappy Mustang team, and I think this coaching staff keeps the Hornets focused and has them prepared to exact a little revenge from a season ago.

Stingers Up!

Anyone making the trip to San Luis Obispo? When I used to lived in CA, my buddy who's a Cal Poly alum would make the PCH trip down and support the fellas!

Hero Sports podcast (pretty reputable) is saying that this is a potential trap game for the Hornets. I don't think they're wrong...

...in addition, another thing to notice is the potential injuries that could amount from this game especially on the Defensive side! That's what the the Triple-Option does to a Defense so keep an eye out for that... :coffee:

A let down seems likely, given the hoopla and excitement around the last 3 weeks. Plus, playing in front of a small-ish under-enthused crowd at Poly won't help. This will be a big test - how good are Taylor and staff at keeping the players motivated and focused? On the plus side, Poly hasn't stopped anyone on D yet, can't imagine them slowing down our offense. Of course we could help them out with self-inflicted wounds...

Speaking of injuries, we have been very good at avoiding them this year. As far as I can tell, it looks like only Perryman, Gable and Garcia are missing some time. Any one know how significant the injuries are? Any others?

We are 14.5 point favorites. If we can avoid the trap game curse and win big, my god - we could be looking at a matchup of Top 5 teams at home on NOV. 2!!!!

Also, I try to sync up the Jason/steve audio with the Pluto
Broadcasts but I can never get it to work. Any tips?

They're thinking the same. With the few bloggers left on Cal Poly page to an off year, they're hoping we're over looking them because of the Weber game the following week.

They're also referencing "Troy Taylor's Defense" while @ EWU. LMAO that made my weekend. Using that as a reference on how our Defense is beatable...

Interesting side-story is that there are 2 former QBs at Cal Poly who played for Taylor (or at least using the Taylor offense) - backup Jeffrey and QB coach Graves (he won Gatorade HS POY his senior year at Folsom). They definitely have some inside knowledge about how our QBs make their base and progression reads. Of course knowing it and stopping it are 2 different things.

Why do you think Cow Poly's going to have a "smallish under-enthused crowd?" They've had something of a downer year, and now an upstart (in their minds) claiming to be #7 in the country is coming to town; it's a chance to pull the Hornets back to Earth, burst their bubble so to speak. I think they're going to show up in droves for the chance at beating a long-time rival that they think isn't as good as they are.

Sounds like a great chance for us to send a large crowd home disappointed, if you ask me....

This week will test the discipline Thompson has instilled in this defense.

Exactly for the reason you stated - a downer year. And attendance/enthusiasm doesn't usually pick as you lose more games. But hope you are right, and they fill the place looking to take down the new-look Hornets.

Looking forward to watching my first game on Pluto. Didn't have any luck with the other TV services used for our 2 FBS games.

Yes and no, I think. Graves played under Taylor a decade ago. And Jeffrey, too, was under him prior to Taylor leaving for EWU then Utah.

I’m pretty sure Coach picked up a few things and evolved from those two stints. So I don’t believe they’ll have as much intel as you might think. The stuff they’ll know is how he works and communicates with players and obviously how he tutors QB’s since that’s his specialty.

But in terms of X’s and O’s and current day philosophy, I believe a lot has changed since they last worked with him.
