Western Oregon game

Let's not be the next victim of the big and bad Wolves from Monmouth. Of course, I think we are whole lot better then the Pilots.

Final Score: 93-58

PSU was disgustingly better at every position except center. That said, when Morrison forced his offense, he was effective. I think he maybe had seven points, and even blocked the 7′3″ center’s shot a couple times.

Tyrell Mara dominated his position defensively. He didn’t score, but his presence was clearly felt. He’ll probably end up on the other teams’ top scorers all year, unless they are centers.

Deonte Huff and Dupree Lucas were their regular exciting selves. Lucas probably had around 20 points, and was able to hit almost every shot he took. Huff wasn’t hitting outside shots, and he missed a few highlight-reel dunks, but he made a few steals, collected a few boards and threw down one good dunk.

Dominguez was the key to the Viking offense. When he was in, everything moved very smoothly, and he created shots for everyone on the floor. However, he was in foul trouble all game, and when he was off the floor the offense was stagnant. If he can’t stay on the court during the conference season, the Viks go from legit contenders for the NCAA bid to competing for a bid to the conference tournament.

Julius Thomas backed up Morrison at center. He filled in with tenacity on defense and on the boards, and was able to cover a couple seven footers reasonably well. His shooting didn’t look great, but he won’t need to score much to help the team. This likely won’t be his role during the regular season when J.R. Moore is available.

Kyle Coston backed up Mara at the 4. As expected, he looked physically overmatched against heavier players, and was ineffective most of the game. He knocked down a few jumpers late.

There was a rotation of players which included Huff, Lucas, and Coston at the 3.

Andre Murray backed up Lucas. He had a great shooting touch and passed the ball well too. However he drew Coach Bone’s criticism for unwise decision making at times. He should receive playing time all year, and is ready to score off the bench like PSU needs.

Mickey Polis backed up Dominguez. He gave great effort, made a few long jumpers, and looked pretty good on defense. However, his ball-handling and distribution were consistently lacking, and that doesn’t bode well if Dominguez is off the floor.

Brian Curtis also saw some time and passed the ball well. He probably won’t see any time in meaningful games, as he is the 5th guard in the rotation.

Alex Tiefenthaler and Justynn Hammond aren’t eligible until January. J.R. Moore didn’t see action due to a minor knee injury.

There are plenty of reasons to believe this team can compete for the NCAA bid in March. However, it’s going to depend on the seniors, and Dominguez’s presence on the court. With 3 players who are among the best in the Big Sky at their position, there is no reason to believe this team shouldn’t be there at crunch time.

A few comments from the game tonight...

The good:

A large win against a DII team. Expected and delivered, as it should be from our program. Some things that I immediately noticed is that there are some guys on are squad that definitely hit the weight room. Mara has definitely been in the gym. The pudgy frosh from two years ago is ready to throw some weight around this year. Guys on the team seem to be well conditioned and in great shape. Much more so than their counterparts tonight.

We have a great point guard. Dominguez is really, really talented on both sides of the ball and is the leader of the offense. There was a point tonight when Murray tried to clear him out and call a play. Dominguez let him know that motion would be ran and put it in play. His defense was great and his five steals were the result of how tight he played.

Huff was stellar tonight. High energy and he shot well. That missed dunk was about the only thing that went wrong for him tonight. It amazes me how quick he is in transition sometimes.

Dupree made a couple of preseason turnovers. Shot the ball well.

Free throws. I'll take anything over 70% given the last two years.

The not so good:

Morrison was off tonight on both sides of the ball. It's an exhibition, he gets a pass. ;-)

Polis can shoot, but he doesn't look sound bringing the ball up the court. I'd like to see him face a press in some of the non-conference games to gauge how he'll do. There is a definite drop off when he is running the offense compared to Dominguez.

Dominguez fouls. When/if he gets in foul trouble, who leads the offense? Polis has some work to do and Curtis is sort of a liability on defense.

Questions:

Coston. I thought he'd come in a little stronger and meaner. You can't let a D-II post player get free throw rebounds (and there were a lot of those tonight) over you. He looks more comfortable out there than last year, but he needs to get pissed down on the block.

Who will run the offense when Dominguez is on the bench?

Murray. Shot really well, but he needs to fit into the offense more.

Well, that's about it. All in all, a good first game.

Thanks guys for the wrap on the game. I guess we'll learn a lot more when UCLA is the opponentl. (I can't believe we're playing UCLA.) Sounds like the point will be the big concern. If Dominguez is off or is in foul trouble then PSU will be in trouble. However, we can't forget that Dupree can play point in a pinch.

It was a good start to the season. I think it was a good warm up game, but it is hard to tell how good we are after a blow out like that. University of Portland must be looking forward to a Rose city Romp on their home court. I can't believe they lost to a team that would win maybe one game if they played in the Big Sky.

Within minutes of the game, it was very noticeable the Viks were more athletic then the Wolves. I was most impressed with Murray, who looks like a basketball player. Plays good defense, can shoot, a team player and overall hustles on both sides of the ball. Dominguez was a total pest on the defensive side and was a good floor leader. Biggest disappointment was Morrison, he has to learn to make quicker decisions on the offense. We are going to need that dimension to be really successful.

Morrison looked way, way, way out of sync. Hopefully it was just an off game.

Good point on the guys looking more athletic. Since we're D1 and they are D2, you'd expect that, but there was a huge difference between the two. Also, not to hammer on WOU, but they seemed poorly conditioned. There were a couple of their players that looked pretty ragged after some quick transition plays.
