Western Oregon @ Portland State - GTS

WOU is Mouse's alma mater, so I don't know what game plan to expect.

What we need to do first is prevent WOU from pulling a Chadron State on us the way they did on Montana State. In this developmental conference of ours, whoever plays a D-II opponent does so with the intent of rolling up the score and having a satisfying differential and tune-up---an ego boost. We can do that and still be gracious hosts to WOU and WOU alums.

Politics aside, this is a tune-up game for PSU. We wish WOU well but not at our expense.

We can best establish legitimacy in our own eyes by pouring it on for the first half, then easing off a bit by starting our second team in the second half. Everyone should have the opportunity to play during the fourth quarter.

I know it's a DII team, and we have a ton of guys coming in the summer, but the offense looked anything but sharp in the spring game.
 
Marty's sensible. WOU is returning nearly the whole team from last year, as I remember - and they had a good season last year. I'd be happy with a 36-17 win.
 
As shown in today's O, WOU/OCE actually leads the all-time record 11-8-1.

Starting right now, if Portland State and Western Oregon played each other for a decade---ten straight years---what would you predict that record to be? Beginning right now, I believe Portland State would win all ten, going 10-0. That would set the all-time in our favor at 18-11-1. Good for both universities.

WOU has got something to show come Aug 30th. In fact, I wonder what will be the ratio of PSU fans to WOU fans present. I can't tell if this will be a close game or a runaway but if WOU can recruit Kevin Boss types, they gotta have something going on in D-II. They have nothing to lose in this game. We, on the other hand, certainly do. D-II PSU-under-Pokey took out I-AA teams on a fairly regular basis.

We cannot afford to get "Chadroned" in this game. So we should not look past WOU. Remember Chadron State 35 Montana State 24? What this needs to be for us is a quality tune-up match (and satisfying opening game win) to us get ready to take it to UC-Davis at their place. N'est pas?

Oui. We cannot allow WOU to do to us what we did to so many I-AA schools back in the day. A loss (or even a close win) in this game and confidence in the program would reach an all-time low.
 
No help from the web re offense. They have TEs, and much of their offense last year came on passes. Their QB graduated, however, as did most of their OL same as us. We're in better shape for QBs though. For what it's worth, they brought in 25 new bodies this year. Amongst the new bodies are a couple 300 pound freshmen. This might be a game full of fumbles and missed assignments by both sides. So go first games of the season too often. After today's workout....well, we'll see.
 
You'll see mostly ace back/zone blocking sets. They'll quick motion into different formations to try to create some confusion but really they want to be a balanced offense that moves the chains and controls the clock. They will test you deep but love to throw the chain type routes. It's not designed to be a big play offense but have kids that can break big plays.
