Tonight is the night!! The Purple Palace will be rockin once again! Next week we welcome (rudely of course) the Aggies to town. Lets hope we can get the guys injured back and work out some bugs tonight in anticipation to the season starting. What do we look for out of the team tonight?

Starting Lineup?
Harding
Richardson
Baker
Chapman
Braxton

I don't know if we will see it, but I would like to see:

Ary-Turner
Harding
Richardson
Chapman
Braxton

I would also like to see us play big a few times, with chapman at the 3 spot.

Will it? Western St is D2, went 6-20 last season, and were picked to finish 12th in their conference this year. It's sad that they're actually charging to get into this game.

:thumb:  You make an excellent point. No, the Dee won't be rockin tonight, but hopefully next Friday it will, that is if WSUSA and Athletics takes the initiative to actually market it. There should be signs all over campus now.

As for tonight. At least Western is an NCAA team. Makes me scratch my head that we would play a D2 for an exhibition, but NAIA or lower during the season.

Well did last night answer many questions?

When the team is focused, we look to be good. There was a long stretch where the effort looked really down. Harding and Chapman look to be beasts in the Big Sky. Is Doc even close to an improvement over Cannon? I try not to let these games influence my outlook too much, but I was hoping to see a full throttle effort.

Agree.

Several players looked like they are not conditioned, which I did not expect to see. Defensively, Weber struggled to stay in front of quicker players. Chapman looked pretty good on both ends but needs consistent help to avoid a one-dimensional look. Harding looked pretty good offensively and decent defensively. Hopefully he can continue to get to the rim, get more layups to drop, and stay healthy. Weber looked tired or uninterested through much of the 2nd half. Richardson looks like he's on the verge of having a great shooting year.

My overall takeaway: that effort and execution will not get it done against the Aggies.

The first half is what I expect from a Weber State team playing a D2. The second half was ugly. I think conditioning is an issue with the Cats. Western didn't do anything different from the first to the second half. It just seemed as if Western had more pop in their game. They had more energy. Weber just seemed flat.

Full court press and suddenly a bad D2 is playing up with Weber. Defense is an issue no matter. There was very little help defense, switching wasn't happening, men couldn't stay in front of their men, and worst of all, we were caught flat footed too often. On offense, once again, we get too complacent shooting 3's. We were taller, but kept on chucking. Better ball movement, more post work, and movement without the ball needs to happen. Hell, I feel like a broken record. Aren't these the issues we complain about EVERY freaking year?

one of the things I was most impressed with last night was Harding getting 4 rebounds in the 1st half. Last year Weber's guards did not rebound very well. So it was good to see someone from the guard line getting in there and helping out on the glass.
Losing John for the season will be tough. I think Ary-Turner and Nelson will each become more of an offensive threat as they gain experience. What I was looking for out of each of them last night was an absence of mistakes. I thought both played solidly. Weber doesn't need points out of Ary-Turner at the point. The rest of the starters will generate enough offense.
I do hope Dallas is back on the floor soon and that he has improved since last year. Kozack just doesn't look like a solid back-up who can contribute a lot right now. Maybe as the season progresses.

This is a huge hope. I am just not sure he has the motor to play the post at this level of competition. This may be a good year to play some small ball when the bench gets thin. At least you know what you get effort wise from Baker.

Yes; it will be good to get Dallas back. However, you guys are off base on what Kozak has to offer. As he gets more comfortable with this team, he will contribute a lot. Against a team like we played, it is hard for big men to look good. Their post players were 6'6'' and 6'5'' guys who can shoot from the outside. I thought that Kozak did a better job defending than any of our other bigs. His offensive game is quite good. He just needs more time on the floor with his new teammates. Also Dallas has been off the floor for three months now. He will need some time to get back into the swing of things.

The thing I worried the most about was all of the guys limping off the floor. We need healthy bodies. Our depth is all freshmen and that didn't seem to work well in the second half last night. We were at our worst with three freshmen on the floor at the same time. I guess that is to be expected.
