What happened?

Not trying to troll here, I just didn't see the game.

I watched Cal Poly get smashed two weeks ago and thought they might be the worst team in the Big Sky. I had been mildly surprised that PSU played Oregon State and Wazzu close (I realize WSU dumped a lot of points in during garbage time). I thought Portland State would probably win by decent margin.

Did they just sleepwalk through the game?

Wow, where to start? Slow start. Stopped on 4th Down and goal on our only real drive in the first half. CP was able to drive downfield all night. We barely slowed them down. Poor tackling. Some key penalties. You name it.

On offense it seemed we just never got anything going at all. It seemed like we only ran our most basic stuff over and over without success. Read option without the read part and no credible passing attack.

I'm not here to defend any coaches but we really didn't tackle well at all. Our LBs never got outside, kept getting cut and we never set an edge on D all night. The only part of the triple option we stopped at all was the dive. There's no special D you can run to stop that offense. The only way to shut it down is to play good sound defensive football, not get blocked, and tackle. We just didn't execute.

Offensively, we are in a tough spot. We have a QB problem. We can't throw the ball with any consistency so once teams focus on shutting down our running game we have no answer. We need a playmaker, someone that can make something happen. QB keeps get stale after a while.

Still, its a non-conf game so it ain't over yet. There's still plenty of time for good things to happen so I'm staying positive for now.

Well, it probably doesn't ease the pain, but Viking D is still quite a bit better than Eastern's D.

Every year lately, it seems like PSU has these no-show performances... these types of games where the team just seems asleep. On paper, the Vikings look like a top-half of the conference team.
