Who are we?

Are we losers? Are we a one man team? Are we the team they think we are? Or are we something special? Do we have it in us? Or are we almost good enough, but not good enough? Do we have clutch? Can we win a big game? Who are we?

...a team that fouls. We have committed 60 fouls in our 2 DI games. Between the 2 games the opponents have shot a total of 75 free-throws and 64 points from the 75 attempts. We will not win many if any games if this rate continues.

The refs have been awful. We got screwed in Logan, and Saturday marked the most free throws made by Utah ever in the Huntsman Center and most since 1969. When Clyburn was at the line the Utah crowd chanted "Let them play", at the refs that gives you some indication how bad they were.

Look at the number of free throws for both sides. Utah was 40 of 45, Weber was 26-30. There was little chance to build any rhythm or flow in the game. This was an example of refs affecting the game well beyond expectations.

that was the most boring weber game i have ever seen. 55 fouls is pretty rediculous. utah was my 30th wsu away game and probably somwhere between my 115th to 125th wsu game i have seen in the past 9 years and i have never seen a game so long or lame.

i would think that game is a school record with no over times. i think the game ended at about 6:15 or 6:20 with the tipoff at 4pm. halftime was at 5pm and that was also strange.

the most frustrating part of the game was the refs were big sky boys. thanks guys.

our team is gonna destroy people once we get some refs that arent foul happy. he didnt shoot well against utah but we wont see another team that tall this year.

No doubt the officials were way too involved and loved their whistles on Saturday. But it's not their fault we gave up 90 points. We fouled more than Utah did. From my perspective, we fouled because we got beat on and off the ball; and because we are out of position defensively. And I haven't seen our transition defense look this bad sense the Larry Farmer era. Teams that watch game film are just going to focus on DL, and force others to step up. Such a huge disappointment when you think this could have been a team that could have knocked off one or both of those in-state schools. Those losses hurt attendance and recruiting.

Its really to bad that Weber had to face Utah and Utah State so early in the season. The team is still trying to gel, and regardless of what occurred last year, there are a lot of new faces on this team. Also, beating Utah and Utah State at their places isn't the easiest thing to do; especially with whistle happy refs. Its pretty easy to score 90 when you get to the foul line 45 times. Thats 45 opportunities to score with the time stopped. Yet, even then Weber probably had a chance to win the game, but they did two things that really hurt them. 1. Way to much dependence on DL to score 2. Early dependence on the 3pt shot. Weber needs to be moving the ball more, sharing the responsibility and getting more assists. Someone else has got to step up. I'm looking at Hughey and Morris, the Seniors. Those two have got to get things together. Also, we need Bull to wake up from his slump. He is to mental. He just needs to go out and play. I love Bull on the floor, because of his hustle and toughman attitude, but whenever he shots it I cringe. Currently, Richardson is leading the team in assists in limited time on the floor.

One thing that really helped Weber last year against the Utes was that the team drove it from the opening tip. That wasn't seen on Sat, there was A. two much fouling (some quite phantom like); especially from our Bigs. B. Stagnant Offense. The team wasn't using their strengths Speed, but mostly standing around the 3pt line and finally C. The team didn't seem like they even wanted to play till 10min left in the game. No energy...in reality it seemed like Utah was had more motivation, energy, and desire than the CAts. I'm hoping they bring it in their next couple of games. I'd like to see more balanced scoring from the Cats, and some unselfish play. I know DL is the man, and I definitely want him to be handling the ball, but for Weber to be successful consistently, the Cats need other players showing up to play alongside DL.

Our starting front line 5,4,3 had 6 SIX points Saturday. I also cringe when Bull shoots, I love his toughness but his shot selection is really poor. I know why Mahoney starts, but we have these huge Periods where we can't score. The lineup I like is Tresnak-Fulton-Hughey-Bamforth-Lillard and Rich if Hughey or Bamforth are on the bench. In my opinion we don't have enough offense on the floor with our current starting lineup.

According to Wildcat Carl and the Flying Dutchman, the refs at Utah were absolutely horrible. According to Rahe in the post-game radio interview, the refs were not the deciding factor in the game (of course he is not going to publicly criticize the refs out of fear of a fine, but he didn't even allude to the fact that the refs were an issue).

So, who is right? Rahe or Carl?

Another issue, I have noticed that the bigs are struggling this year. Granted, USU and U have some big guys and some talented big men, but they are still struggling. Will this get rectified when they play in the Big Sky or will this be the Achilles heel all year long?

Also we played a pretty good Utah team, I was impressed with Utahs sheer size and athleticism. I think Boylen may have saved his job, and we didn't even see highly recruited true Freshman starter O'brien out 4 weeks. Clyburn is the best payer Utah has seen since Bogut. I loved his game. Utah has 5 wing players at 6'7 Clyburn,Glover,Obrien,Dimaria(not impressed with this Juco), and Fuller Idaho player of the year Redshirting I think, they just signed highly recruited George Matthews wing for 2011. Utahs starting 2 guard Glover is 6'7. I've always liked Jay Watkins, their PG Watkins was ok. I thought Washburn was a nice looking player as well. I might be crazy, but I think they can contend for the MWC title, I think they beat byu atleast once this year, I also think they win in Logan by 10 Wednesday night.

We need some athletic wing players. Al Hamilton comes to mind.

I've never heard Rahe rip the refs postgame, but he was sure riding them during the game. They were AWFUL. They took us out of our transition game completely which I'm sure we were relying on heavily because of Utahs size, to have a chance to win.

Considering:
- in my opinion Utah is a much improved team
- Our starting front line scored 6 total points
- Lillard was cold the first half, and Bamforth never got anything going
- The refs took us out of our running game
- we shot a poor 24% from the field until we hit our last 11-17 that bumped us to 37%
- we were 4-19 from behind the Arc
- Utah had an extra 14 points from the foul line

/we could have really been blown out big, but we even made a run in the 2nd half to bring it within 3 I think it was.
-Tresnak I think is getting better for. True Freshman
-Fulton played his best game yet as a R Freshman
-We forced a lot of turnovers
-We shot really well from the line 26-30.

Most of what has been said, I completely agree with. I still think Weber is as good or better than the Utes. The game played on Saturday, didn't really indicate how good either team is. Saturday's game was a clear cut example of how refs can ruin a game. Those three should never be allowed to ref another DI basketball game. Hell, they probably shouldn't be allowed to ref girls church basketball, they were that poor. This same exact scenario hit Weber last year when the Cats played Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara, I think they shot over 40 FT's they hit 38...Weber shot a very low percentage and depended to much on 3pt shots. But the team was still coming together. There are a lot of new faces again this year, three new starters, but I think the team will be fine, once they get some more time under their belts together.

As for the starters...Wow, I totally agree with you Skeeter, except with Mahoney, which I think you also were second guessing over. Mahoney needs to do a better job of staying out of foul trouble and being an offensive threat. I think Fulton is the better offensive player. He has the potential of becoming a defensive threat as well. No matter, which way we look at it, Weber needs to be generating more offense in the post.

Pretty sad that they needed 45 attempts to beat Weber. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that the game on Sat was fairly one sided in Utah's favor. Stupid Big Sky refs, trying to get promotions to the MWC or the PAC-12... Don't they know, that the best games are those that are fair and equal, that allows the game to have a smooth flow and are fun to watch. Oh wait, thats right these are Big Sky refs we are talking about. I wonder if any of them could have graduated from High school...they are pretty stupid.

I'm not one to defend officials, but am surprised how many on line are throwing them under the bus. If we defend the way we did Saturday, we will loose to Alaska. The refs didn't get beat on the ball or play flat-footed. Our league is lead by a suspension-happy commissioner, which is why Coach isn't going to say anything on the radio. Plus I would guess he knows the level of defense his team is playing. Dutch complains about the officials every game I have ever listened to.....maybe just to hear his voice or in leiu of having anything of substance to say. I seriously worry about this next game......maybe because I still remember the loss to Fairbanks a few years ago.

I just can't get over the fact that the Pukes shot 45. I guess when they don't get 45 attempts they lose...look what happened in Logan (the Aggies instead got 40 attempts...Wow, seems like the road instate team is going to get screwed this year. This is hard to say, but the fairest game between instate teams was at the Marriot Center). But Hdq has a good point. Weber's defense has been a bit slow, which is really strange. This years team should be quicker and more athletic than last years team. I don't get it. Pane and Clyburn killed us off the dribble. If Pane plays like he has all the other games, Weber wins in Logan. our Guards have got to play better defense. Also, Morris, needs to man up and play like a Senior.

I like that we have the capability to have a deficit yet still be able to win games. These past two games are excellent experience for our team for league coming up.
