Who Is Better: Dame vs Jimmer

Dame didn't play his senior year and was drafted 6th. Jimmer played 4 years and was also drafted. There was a lot of discussion over the last 2-3 years about who was better. BYU fans would laugh at even comparing Dame to Jimmer.

We never got to see Dame play his last year to have a full comparison.

I say Dame of course.

lets wait until after the season before we can answer this question. At least until after summer league.

There is no question that Dame is a more complete player. Jimmy Bob's ability to score is about the same as Dame's. Damian is a better defender, passer and rebounder. There is no question who is the better athlete. Time will tell, but I think that Dame's game fits into the pro's better than Jimmy Bob's.

Sory Zoobies, it's not really that close. I will be surprized if Jimmy gets an extension offer after his third year. :coffee:

Jury is still out on that one. I don't think it will be complete after one year either. There was an article a week or 2 ago about who would be better between Jimmer, Dame, and Andre Miller. The author picked Andre Miller which seemed like the safe pick considering Miller's career is almost over. But between Jimmer and Dame, I do think Dame is the better player. Better athlete without question. But I also like Dame's situation in Portland better than Jimmer's situation in Sacramento. I think Portland can do something special. Where Sacramento has a bunch of ball hogs, bad owners, questionable coach. My biggest fear was Dame would be drafted by Toronto... And that Toronto is where careers die... (sans a few. Bosh, Carter, Calderon. But still a terrible situation over there). Portland is an ideal situation for Damian to succeed in my opinion... I hope he does.

I agree we need more data to sample. We do not have a good comparison yet.

Dame played 3 college seasons. Jimmer played 4. We do not have a senior season of each to compare. Though you could say both were in college for 4 years since both played as true freshmen at age 18. Dame had a year to sit out due to injury but Jimmer had more experience on the hardwood.

Jimmer has played 1 year in the NBA and Dame obviously just got drafted.

I am not sure if the draft number really means much. Both were lottery picks. It just comes down to which team needs what. If no teams needed a point guard in the top 10 Dame could have gone lower. Sullinger's stock dropped at the last minute and was supposed to be top 10. What if Portland drafted Harrison Barnes?

It was a shame Dame & Jimmer didn't get to play against each other in 2011. It will also be interesting to watch Dame in the NBA as a rookie knowing it could have been his senior year in college.

I am not a fan of BYU but I do like Jimmer. He is one of the best college players I have ever seen and 9 lottery picks come to mind that I have seen play in college, maybe more...

One of my BYU friends met him once, and said he acted like a self absorbed douche.

That is lame to hear. Well, he did go to BYU...

I worked in Orem during Jimmer's senior year with his cousin. lol. Working in Orem was torture and not just because I commuted from Ogden. Then a new job decended to me like manna from heaven. I was laid off from my job before Orem. The company in Orem wanted to hire 4 of us laid off. Two guys said Orem? No thanks and decided unemployment was better than working in Utah County.

Interesting...

Since I have a serious bias, I'm going to say Lillard. Though, like catcat said, watching Jimmer play was un-real at times. He has some serious ball skills. It was because of him that the Cougars were able to advance in the tournament as far as they did. If Davies is playing, last years BYU team has a great shot at making the Elite 8 and possibly the Final 4. Also, and not to knock the Cats, BYU's team when Jimmer was there, had a lot more depth and less injuries than Lillards last year with the Cats. Not saying the Cougars were better, but having Jaxon Emery, Davies, and Hartsock all available opened up Jimmer more. The Cats losing both Mook and Bull really hurt the Cats ability to open up the offensive side of the court. Lillard had to do more, and probably through this, it forced him to get a lot better. Personally, I don't think Jimmer would have been able to do what Lillard did. Nonetheless, both had good SG's to help open up the backcourt, and both had good posts who could be depended on to score regularly. Interesting how close both are stat wise. Too bad Lillard was injured before their last chance to play against each other in college.

Dame for sure got drafted into a much better situation. Portland is a much better franchised than the Kings. Besides that the Trailblazers have two point guards on their roster, Nolan smith and Dame. Dame should start or at least get a significant amount of playing time from game one. The Kings organization is full of selfish one on one scoring guards. I also don't agree that Jimmer had more college experience. They both were in college for four years and even though Dame got injured in year 3 he was still able to do things to improve his game. He, as well with the coaches, have said that sitting on the bench he was able to gain a different perspective of the game and that he improved a lot during that time.

My opinion is that while Jimmer had a much better college career, Dame should have a better NBA career. But it's way too soon to tell. All players benefit from who their coaches are, what franchise they play for, and who their team mates are. All of those things are important to a players development. And right now I'd say Dame is in a much better situation with all of the above. Turnover is pretty high in the NBA and that may change in 2 to 3 years though.

I'd also say both of them seem to have good work ethics.

Far too early to tell. Even though I'd love to see Dame's rookie year make BYU fans finally shut the hell up about Fredette. I don't want to put my foot in my mouth just yet.

I heard that his dad had actually blamed the media on those remarks, that they were skewed, and that he actually meant that Andrew would end up being the greatest Australian NBA basketball player ever. :kisswink:
