Who will be the last player to transfer out?

According to my math we are still at 14 players for next year. I'm surprised we have not heard anything yet. I have been assuming its Hayden Hunter, but I'm wondering if there is something else going on. I'm wondering if Mckay Cannan might not be coming here after his mission. He is due back in June, but you never know with returned missionaries. Sometimes they come back and lose the desire to play or they think they need to go to BYU. Just being suspicious. I would have thought we would have heard by now if one of our current players was leaving.

North Dakota just got a transfer guard. 6'2'' Wheeler Baker is a smaller version of 'Hot Dog' Huff. He is just their kind of player. I predict that he will do well there. What I'm not willing to predict is if he can make them win. They tout him as a point guard. but he looks like a wing to me. :coffee:

Looking over that transfer list, there are a lot of highly rated, at least out of HS, players who have not found homes yet. With so many transfers on the market, and that they generally have to sit out a year, It can not be that easy to find a place they want to play. There will be many who have to drop down to D11 or D111, and many who will be out of basketball altogether.

Speaking of which, has anyone heard if Golden or Coston have landed anywhere? I would expect that both of them could be headed to D11. :coffee:

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota men’s basketball head coach Brian Jones announced the addition of 6-foot-2 shooting guard Wheeler Baker to the program on Monday. Baker spent his first collegiate season at the University of Albany where the Great Danes advanced to the NCAA Tournament. As a lateral transfer within Division I, Baker will have to sit out the 2015-16 season per NCAA rules and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Never touted as a point guard.

Wheeler Baker, to me at least, is not a point. From his stats, it really seems like he is a definite SG. http://www.ualbanysports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15800&ATCLID=209528960" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Nice addition for Jones and the fighting Sioux. Coming out of high school, he was a solid mid-major recruit. Albany is a good program, and he played a part in their success during the 2014-2015 campaign. North Dakota should be pretty tough the year he plays. Next year they should be alright (depends on how good their JC transfers end up being), but the year after with Baker getting eligibility and Hooker being a senior North Dakota will have all the pieces in place, at least on paper, to compete for the conference crown.

As for Weber and the last player to transfer out. I'm shocked that we haven't heard anything yet. That last player has a couple of options. Could transfer to a local DII, DII or NAIA, end up going to a low-major DI, or hit up a year of JUCO. Then again, nothing has been announced, so who knows what is happening.

For what it's worth, a lot of people have speculated Hunter may be the odd man out, but I think I saw him just the other day near campus.

In the past 4 seasons, beginning with the 2011-12 season, there have been a total of 18 players leaving the team. 9 of those 18 were walk-ons and were not given a scholarship. They are: Logan Foster, Jordan Rex, Christian McDonald, Aziz Leeks, Brady Borklund, Jake Bigler, Jordan Brown, JC Kennedy, and Grant Jones. Conclusion: These players were never seriously considered as players who could help the team win games, but were at Weber for practice purposes with the longshot chance that they might be good enough to be offered a scholarship after their walk-on status was exhausted. Kudos to the coaching staff for their work in this area.

An additional 9 of the 18 who left were scholarship players. Two of those 9, Mike Brown & Gelaun Wheelwright (debateable) left of their own volition and found homes elsewhere at a lower level. The other 7, Wayne Bradford, Duce Zaid, Royce Williams, Josh Fuller, Chris Golden, JJ Coston and Ryan Van Pelt were counseled out of the program. Some of these did not find, or have not found, homes in other programs. None have surfaced at other schools at an equivalent or higher level than Weber. Conclusion: At the back end of the roster Rahe has been taking a lot of chances on players. In the most recent season he missed badly on Chis Golden & Coston.

From the 2011-12 season a total of only one scholarship players left the team. Mike Brown left on his own.
From the 2012-13 season, three scholarship players left the team. Gelaun Wheelwright, a projected starter, left by mutual agreement while Duce Said and Wayne Bradford were counseled out.
From the 2013-14 season, two scholarship players left the team. Josh Fuller and Royce Williams were counseled out by the staff.
And finally from this past season three scholarship players left the team. Chris Golden, JJ Coston & Ryan Van Pelt were all counseled out.

What conclusions can be drawn from this info? First Rahe is missing on 2-3 players each season, maybe a bit much to miss on as much as 25% of your recruits. Second the missing seems to be escalating in the past 4 years, but maybe 4 years is not long enough to draw conclusions on. Third, I think that the upcoming season will tell us a lot about whether Rahe can hold on to recruits when they feel that they can play but don't get to play very much. The team will be stacked at most positions so the pressure will be on the coaching staff to keep everybody happy. This is an important year as far as gauging how good Randy really is at team building. It isn't difficult to keep your top 8 or 9 players when they all get decent playing time. But this year there could be as many as 10+ players who deserve playing time. Can the staff hold on to those who are good but not getting decent playing time? Time will tell...

I think Weber is primed for a big year if they get the right coaching! I believe that newcomers Cody John, Dusty Baker & Kiko Stavrev are advanced enough to help this team as first year players at Weber. Maybe even Juwan Williams and Jordan Dallas will be ready also. I predict that Ryan Cannon will redshirt and possibly Jordan Dallas also. Although I heard Rahe say that he didn't anticipate any redshirts this coming year there could be as many as three, but definitely one or two.

By the way, if Kiko Stavrev is quick enough to play defense against smaller guys I think he would be a helluva wing for us! Would love to have a 6'8" wing... Would love to hear others assessments.

As of now, Hunter will be on the team without a scholarship. Coston and Golden are looking to transfer to a DII in Florida. Van Pelt chose to transfer for academic reasons and has found a pretty good situation ... Weber does not offer engineering. Next year's team will be just as young and unproven as this year's team. Unless Joel, Jeremy and Hill improve dramatically and provide the stability this team needs it could be another interesting year. Optimism seems to grow on trees around here. Personally, I will not buy into any of the hype until next year.

Where on earth did you hear Weber State doesn't offer engineering? I have a friend currently in the engineering program

Interesting that Hunter who coach Rahe deemed most ready to help out of the recruited frosh 2014 class ...is now relegated to a walk on. Fact is that Weber ST. returns more production than every other Big Sky time other than So. Utah.

Not Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering, check it out. They have "Technology" degrees but they are not mainstream degrees in Engineering.

That is one detailed analysis.

1. This stuff is happening in just about every program right now. We are not special or unique, okay maybe other than the fact that we recruited a 6'6 power forward and then his 6'3 identical twin showed up to campus last Summer.
2. When Rahe first took over we had a bunch of glue guys that were happy to be playing D1 ball and they probably weren't the most talented bunch but they bought in 100%. As we have gotten more talented recruits we have gotten more players that want to be the man. There has been players that have wanted more time and larger roles on the team.
3. There are more talented kids that want to come to Weber State. So coach has been put in the tough situation where the incoming freshman are more talented than the guys on the roster. So players are counseled out.
4. EVERY SCHOOL MISSES ON RECRUITS! I think it is just really apparent this year because we missed on two. The larger problem was just not on the recruits but we tried to go smaller and it blew up. Unfortunately, we also had a really undisciplined group last year. When you look at recruiting misses, the ones that stick out to me are: Golden, Costen, Shai Fields, Frank Sessions & Wheelwright. One common thread between them all; I don't consider any one of those players team oriented, Weber State guys.
5. I like the fact that Hayden Hunter is still on the team even as a walk on. If he can figure out his shooting and confidence issues he will be a legit division 1 point guard. He had the prime opportunity to get minutes and shine last season. His reluctance to take a shot made us a zone defenses dream while he was on the court.

I'll give you civil engineering, but Weber State does have mechanical and electrical engineering degrees. Bo Bolen was an electrical engineering major

The school he is transferring to is ranked 14th in the U.S. for engineering in some polls. Weber doesn't even crack the top 200. Whatever degrees Weber has are weak at best.

Got to give Ryan some credit for giving up the dream of playing college basketball for a bigger and more important dream of getting a very good engineering degree. While most college basketball players are only in school because of basketball, and have unrealistic dreams of playing professionally, this kid understands reality and gets what's really important. Good luck to him.

Good for Ryan. He is a smart kid and will get his education paid for. That is important and I'm hoping, if not sure, that the coaches helped him find a good fit for his talents and educational goals. As for Engineering...Weber does have Engineering degrees, and the E.E. program is highly respected, but if you want Mechanical or Civil, it is best to do the pre-engineering and transfer. As for schools Ryan could go to...I would say either Montana Tech or Colorado School of Mines? Both are very strong engineering programs. No matter, good luck to Ryan! What a good kid and hard worker.

As for next season...I'm not sure what to think. The kid who isn't eligible is a legitimate PF, who already has the body to play DI. His replacement could play PF, but seems, from his video like a far better wing. Weber might be fine with available bigs this Fall and could, most likely, play Kiko as a PF if needed, but losing a guy who could have really helped us at the 4 for a guy who might be able to play at the 4 doesn't seem like a good thing to me. Weber has plenty of 3s. Ryan Richardson is a natural choice to start at the 3 next Fall. If not Richardson, Baker or Williams could step into that role. We needed a solid inside presence to back up our bigs. Oh well...Kiko has some skills and it will be good to have him join the program.
