So far I've been able to watch the last 3 games, all losses against California State University at Fullerton, Long Beach State University, and today's loss against the NAIA Warner Pacific University. Kennedy has recruited a couple decent scorers in #45 Michaela Kay and #13 Bree Shepard. They are athletic girls who can play no doubt. Kay is a definite shooter and Shepard can get to the rim decently and shoot a little from outside as well. But in my greatest opinion (I'm curious to hear a solid argument against this), Kennedy has had enough time with Freshmen #5 Kian McNair and Junior #20 Ashley Torres Negron to realize that all 4 of these girls are not point guards. The former two girls can shoot and create for themselves to a degree, but the latter two girls struggle doing much of anything on offense let alone get the rest of the team involved...
My greatest concern is that Kennedy is playing these girls in the wrong positions.
Kay is not a point guard, she is a shooter and should be in the scoring position at the 2-guard or possibly the 3-guard.
Shepard is also a scorer, and along with Kay cannot handle the ball very well and doesn't look to pass unless she has no other option. She should never bring the ball up court, especially because she is so quick and can be so deadly at the wing in the half court but mostly in transition.
Kian McNair has brought the ball up for most of the time when Kay doesn't have it. And like the others, she cannot distribute the ball effectively and struggles handling the ball, especially in transition.
Ashley Torres Negron mainly gets the ball in the half court and she has consistently been able to get to the free throw line, without a doubt. But, she does so because she dribbles with her head down and tries to force and create her own shot when it is not there, instead of letting the game come to her. Again, a much more effective guard who plays better when she is open or in the catch and shoot position.
With such a young team, and with such little experience at the guard position, I only have one question...
Where is Montana Walters? A 2-time 1st Team All-State Point Guard from Oregon City High School and former starter as a Freshman at Santa Clara University. A Redshirt Sophomore, she brings college experience, a winning and competitive background, leadership, and the ability to spread the court, get everyone else involved and not to mention she has NBA range as a shooter... Instantly she would colossally improve the entire play of the Vikings if she was switched to point guard, with the ball in her hands, making the decisions up and down the court each possession. She has a natural ability to find open shooters and Kay and Shepard would contribute more points on the offensive end immediately as they would be relieved from the responsibility of trying to get everyone else involved, when instead they should be simply focusing on what they do best offensively, and that is putting the ball in the bucket. Additionally, our post play has been nearly non-existent thus far and I believe that is due to the fact that there is no point guards on the floor to look to the post for an entry pass. There are only shooters handling the ball and that is a significant issue. If you followed Oregon High School women's basketball at all in the last 5 years, you would know that Walters solves that problem as well.
But this is only possible if Walters plays sufficient enough minutes to display all these attributes and qualities that she can provide for a young, immature, and inexperienced Vikings team, struggling on the offensive end...
After tonight there have been 90 TO's and 41 Assists through the last 3 games... The point guard position is non-existent.
Its time to try something different
Quick look at how effective Walters is at the Point Guard position and how much help she could provide our girls
