1. Coaching: I'm not saying that Sears was a terrible guy, or for that matter, a terrible coach. He was put into a really bad situation with a staff that wasn't really his staff. I think under the circumstances he did what he could to hold back the flood, but it definitely wasn't enough. Here's hoping he has a better go at it in Sacramento, just not when the Hornets and Cats meet. Regardless, Hill and his staff are energized, disciplined, and most importantly, ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. They are invested in the process of building a winner here in Ogden and from all accounts are on the right path. We can't expect miracles. Even Mac had his rebuilding bumps when he took over the team. Lets just enjoy competitive, tough-nosed, and improving football for the next couple of years. But, we as fans can, at least, expect that: COMPETITIVE football, and I for one, believe that that is what we will see here at Weber. We might not win a lot the next couple of years, but Weber will compete, and be known as a tough ass team.
2. Schedule: last years schedule was brutal!! Playing SFA was the right way to start the season. But then things got really ugly. Having to play Utah (who was a lot better than their schedule showed. They did beat Stanford and lost a lot of really close games), USU, McNeese on the road (one of the top teams in FCS) was terrible for our football program. The team had absolutely no heart after being beaten soooo badly and it took three additional weeks to right the ship enough to become somewhat competitive. But 2 FBS, and 6 ranked FCS teams really put a beating into the Cats. This season the schedule is a bit cleaner. Start the season with an FBS and at least get NDSU at home. Having UND, ISU, and UNCO on the schedule helps the Cats a lot. Also, SUU lost a lot from last years team and the Cats could pull an upset in Cedar.
3. Experience: One good thing about a terrible schedule and young team was that the Cats gained a lot of experience and were starting to learn what it took to win games by the end of the season. Even if it took a hurricane type atmosphere to beat the Bungles. Weber's team was the youngest that I could remember. I think the team averaged 26 true FR playing per game. Insane throwing those guys into such a fire, but it will, in the long run pay huge dividends.
4: Drop Down QB: We've been here before. Remember Alabama?? Jimmy Barnes?? Anyway, lets hope things are different. Billy was highly recruited before heading to BYU. He could be the player the Cats need to turn things around quick. We all know that the Line is strong, we have a couple of good WR's, and that our FB and RB will be excellent. The offense just needed a leader, one who could see over the line.
These four things really are reasons for the Cats to have hope this season.
