Release: 02/27/2008

Scott and Glenda Burns were recognized for their sponsorship of a Night of Wine and Roses.

Portland State Athletics' 2008 Night of Wine And Roses was the most successful single fund-raising event in the history of the program. The Night of Wine and Roses, presented by Burns Brothers, took place Feb. 23 at the Peter W. Stott Center and proceeded to generate more than $200,000 for Viking Athletics' scholarships.

The Night of Wine and roses had 485 registered guests, more than double the attendees in 2007. Both silent and oral auctions took place at the event. Top auction items on the night were a Yacht Cruise on the Willamette River, a suite at Safeco Field for a Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox game, and a Chateau in Whistler, BC. In addition, the purchase of 41 Jerry Glanville/Mouse Davis autographed Viking football helmets at $200 each netted more than $8,000.

In addition to the Burns Brothers, Portland State Athletics would like to thank the night's other sponsors, including: Shipley & Associates, Stevens Printing, Turner Construction, West Coast Bank, Key Manufacturing, Gresham Sanitary, Arbor Homes, Stewart, Sokol & Gray, Southern Wine & Spirits, Pepsi, Magnacorp and Mt. Hood Beverage.

Yeah, that's good news. All the money raised for scholarships reminds me of my old question about how many football scholarships PSU has funded in relation to the maximum allowable for FCS. Anybody know?

Recent Wine and Roses Was Biggest Fund-Raiser Yet For Viking Athletics

http://www.goviks.com/news/2014/5/29/WR_0529142620.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The 2014 version of Portland State Athletics' Night of Wine and Roses was the biggest fund-raiser in the 14-year history of the event. More than $360,000 were raised on May 17 as Wine and Roses was a smashing success at the Portland Art Museum.

Wine and Roses, presented by Burns Brothers and Evergreen GaveKal, was attended by more than 450 Viking supporters and fans. The proceeds from the evening's silent and oral auctions and other fund-raising activities will go to fund athletic scholarships for Portland State University.

The evening included a special presentation to long-time supporter Peter W. Stott for more than three decades of contributions and commitment to the program. The number 18 was retired by the athletics program in his honor, acknowledging his great success in the 18-wheel trucking industry.

Also playing a role in the evening's festivities were former Vikings and current NFL stars Julius Thomas and DeShawn Shead. Both Thomas, an All-Pro tight end with the Denver Broncos, and Shead, a Super Bowl XLVIII Champion with the Seattle Seahawks, spoke to the crowd and thanked them for support throughout their PSU careers.

Other moments included a presentation on current All-American punter - and former member of the Army - Kyle Loomis; and a testimonial from former Viking quarterback Joe Wiser on the great opportunity presented him by an athletic scholarship at Portland State.

"The night was an overwhelming success," said Tygue Howland, Portland State Athletics' Director of the Annual Fund and Special Events. "There were many incredible moments during the evening highlighting the amazing things happening in Portland State Athletics right now; from hosting several new sponsors, to honoring Mr. Stott, to recognizing our two star NFL alums, to seeing our guests step up with a record level of support for our student-athletes. We were extremely pleased by the success of Wine and Roses again this year and would like to thank all of our supporters for their tremendous generosity."
