Just wanted to throw this out there. These are the winning percentages against in-state opponents (Utah, USU, UVU, BYU and SUU) by WSU coach.
Dick Motta: N/A (0-0)
Phil Johnson: 1.000 (1-0—one game coached against Utah State)
Gene Visscher: .455 (5-6)
Neil McCarthy: .523 (23-21)
Larry Farmer: .333 (5-10)
Denny Houston: .353 (6-11)
Ron Abegglen: .517 (15-14)
Joe Cravens: .344 (11-21)
Randy Rahe: .356 (16-29)
Historically, we have a .423 winning percentage against Utah schools (82-112). We have always done poorly against in-state teams and to say Randy Rahe is the worst ever against in-state schools is not correct.
No real way to make the comparisons more relevant, though, comparing the records/percentages of the coaches vs the Tier 2 in-state schools, which Weber has become a member of under Rahe's tenure. Salary comparisons would be interesting too, compared to the respective "current" markets. I have a hard time with the rally cry of "at least Rahe's not as bad as Farmer or Cravens." This loss against that team is truly unacceptable. It would be as bad as having a history of giving up 20 pts halftime leads-- oh, wait, Rahe has that distinction too. How about that comparison? My boy lost his mind tonight watching this game and pathetic coaching. For a change, I remained relatively calm because I've seen it all too often, over the last ten years.
I've been asked on this forum more than once if I'd like to go back to the likes of Cravens, as I have a little rant. At this point in time? Yes! Give me Cravens back. At least my expectations are realistic since Cravens isn't going to recruit some of the best talent this side of the Mississippi, or whatever crap is often spewed on this forum about how much more talented Weber is than anyone else in the conference and sometimes than most teams on their schedule. If they're so damned talented then why the 20 point meltdowns; why the anemic in-state showings; and why can they make the dance once every 6-7 years? Maybe better coaches who don't struggle with those things have the ability to take lesser talent and teach and coach them up.
It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches would have let that game get away-- what?-- about 4 times. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches wouldn't have seen the disaster of an offense on the floor and tried some different things. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches wouldn't have made an defensive adjustment to the same damn play UVU ran 90% of the night. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches would have lost the last 2 to USU.
OK, /rant off .... I'll go back to just watching the rest of the "Road to Reno," knowing fully whose at the helm.
