Winning percentages by coach

Just wanted to throw this out there. These are the winning percentages against in-state opponents (Utah, USU, UVU, BYU and SUU) by WSU coach.

Dick Motta: N/A (0-0)
Phil Johnson: 1.000 (1-0—one game coached against Utah State)
Gene Visscher: .455 (5-6)
Neil McCarthy: .523 (23-21)
Larry Farmer: .333 (5-10)
Denny Houston: .353 (6-11)
Ron Abegglen: .517 (15-14)
Joe Cravens: .344 (11-21)
Randy Rahe: .356 (16-29)

Historically, we have a .423 winning percentage against Utah schools (82-112). We have always done poorly against in-state teams and to say Randy Rahe is the worst ever against in-state schools is not correct.

Where are you coming up with these numbers? Are you including UVU/SUU. Problem is that Rahe has lost the most in-state games. You throw out SUU/UVU,we are sitting at (4-24), a mere LOUSY .166%....

I am getting these numbers from the media guide available online. And yes I am including SUU and UVU. Are they not in-state schools?

Rahe is lucky that SUU and UVU are in-state schools. Other than Cravens, non of the other coaches were luck enough to have them on the schedule... If they were, the winning percentages would be much higher for those previous coaches.... Thats a fact...

Yes Cravens and Rahe are the only two to have coached against UVU, but every coach since McCarthy has coached against SUU

McCarthy: 3-0
Farmer: 2-1
Houston: 3-1
Abegglen: 5-1
Cravens: 4-3
Rahe 9-3

No real way to make the comparisons more relevant, though, comparing the records/percentages of the coaches vs the Tier 2 in-state schools, which Weber has become a member of under Rahe's tenure. Salary comparisons would be interesting too, compared to the respective "current" markets. I have a hard time with the rally cry of "at least Rahe's not as bad as Farmer or Cravens." This loss against that team is truly unacceptable. It would be as bad as having a history of giving up 20 pts halftime leads-- oh, wait, Rahe has that distinction too. How about that comparison? My boy lost his mind tonight watching this game and pathetic coaching. For a change, I remained relatively calm because I've seen it all too often, over the last ten years.

I've been asked on this forum more than once if I'd like to go back to the likes of Cravens, as I have a little rant. At this point in time? Yes! Give me Cravens back. At least my expectations are realistic since Cravens isn't going to recruit some of the best talent this side of the Mississippi, or whatever crap is often spewed on this forum about how much more talented Weber is than anyone else in the conference and sometimes than most teams on their schedule. If they're so damned talented then why the 20 point meltdowns; why the anemic in-state showings; and why can they make the dance once every 6-7 years? Maybe better coaches who don't struggle with those things have the ability to take lesser talent and teach and coach them up.

It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches would have let that game get away-- what?-- about 4 times. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches wouldn't have seen the disaster of an offense on the floor and tried some different things. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches wouldn't have made an defensive adjustment to the same damn play UVU ran 90% of the night. It's pretty tough to believe that very many 10-year coaches would have lost the last 2 to USU.

OK, /rant off .... I'll go back to just watching the rest of the "Road to Reno," knowing fully whose at the helm.

McCarthy: 3-0
Farmer: 2-1
Houston: 3-1
Abegglen: 5-1
Cravens: 4-3
Rahe 9-3

And just for the heck of it, winning percentages without SUU or UVU games included:

Motta: N/A
Johnson: 1.000 (1-0)
Visscher: .455 (5-6)
McCarthy: .487 (20-21)
Farmer: .250 (3-9)
Houston: .231 (3-10)
Abegglen: .435 (10-13)
Cravens: .238 (5-16)
Rahe: .138 (4-25)

Yes, Rahe has the worst record against Utah, USU and BYU, but there is not one single coach in team history to have won more games than lost against those three schools.

The salary part is what really kills me. $400k a year could buy us some pretty good home games. Back2wsu really believes in Rahe and pointed out he has the most titles :blah: :blah: :blah: . But he also is the most paid and underachiever in the conference. We could be paying a coach half that $400k and still be right where we are at now....

when pointing out rahe's instate record vs the other 8 wsu coaches adding in suu and uvu is completely pointless. suu was D2 for many of the years we racked up wins against them. we should at least seperate the D2 wins.

since i like stats and someone else started this thread i will give it a go.

ill just focus on comparing rahe vs the in-state to the 2 worst coaches in wsu history - larry & denny.

1986-1988, Larry era.
3 seasons, 34-54 record

1989-1991, Denny era,
3 seasons, 43-42 record

6 yr span vs rahe's 10 yrs

Larry & Denny vs instate:

Byu: 1-5, 17%
Usu: 3-9, 25%
Utah: 1-5, 17%

Total: 5-19, 21%

They did get 1 away win, in logan.

Suu and uvu don't count as they were not d1.

Though let's look for fun...

Vs suu they went 5-1. they lost at home to d2 suu in OT in 1987. From 1982 until Cravens we only lost to suu 2 times out of 17 games.

We never played uvu until 2005.

In order for rahe to have out performed the 2 worst coaches in wsu history he would have needed 7 wins vs big 3 which is still only 7-23 (23%) instead of his 3-27, 10%.

7 wins is still pathetic and less than 1 a yr but we would jump for joy at this point to have beat the big 3 an extra 4 times.

In Cravens 7 yrs weber beat the big 3 5 times. And I bet everyone including the administration was pissed we sucked so bad not only vs big sky but vs instate.

Overall we have just 13 wins vs the big 3 since Abbeglen left. That's 17 years. In Abbeglen's 8 seasons he beat the big 3 10 times. He went 10-13, 43%. Don't forget that Abbeglen didn't even get to play usu with his 1995 team which would have been in ogden. So obviously he would have been 11-13, 46%.

If rahe could have matched Abbeglen's record vs the big 3 he would have had to have gone 13-17 instead of 4-26.

(i would need to verify my stats, but ill go with 90% accurate if not 100.)
