Wk 8 Prediction Thread Eagles vs Wildcats

Many on the board are a bit anxious Weber is coming to town and over the past several years, they have been a formidable foe. There appears to be a drop in level this year but there is always reason for concern. Does Eastern let down after the performance last week? Will the defense continue to play well? Is Weber as weak as they appear? Will the thought of a bye next week distract the team? Of course there are always the issues around TO's, penalties and special teams that can alter the course of a close game. Weber has always been a conundrum to me but one thing we know is Jay Hill will do his best to coach them up. I did put some of their frequent board people's comments on the Weber thread and it's not all roses and chocolates in Wildcat world.

Massey has Eastern as a 70% favorite in a relatively tight game. As fans, we are lucky to see this team rebound from a bad beat at NDSU this spring. Eagles are playing to their ability and a little something more which makes this journey so much fun. I don't expect a let down. Best seems focused on the 1-0 mantra. It's working and it keeps everyone from straying too far from what works. I'm all in. I think Eastern has WAY to many weapons, OL is playing well against attacking defenses, DL is showing balance between penetration and managing the edge and the DB's have been nothing short of outstanding the past several games.

Eastern gets two TO's this week and defense gets more than enough stops to allow the offense to outscore Weber by several TD's. Eastern is on a mission.

Eastern 44 - Weber 17

I believe Limu-Jones and Edwards will be back, the teams have been clicking, Defense could improve by eliminating broken tackles, and all personal penalties eliminated. I'm very happy with the management and application of new players for playing time confidence. I love going for two occasionally on PATs or a surprise on-side kickoff as Eastern continues practicing for '21 Frisco and the '22 season. Eagles 56 Wildcats 24

Interesting post from the Weber web site:

Weber, well, the Cats are at the top of the league defensively. BUT, offense is really struggling. Something has to change and I don't know if it will happen in time against the Eagles this Saturday. Is Weber good enough to win? Yes. But, will they? That is what's fun about playing the game. You never know.

Positives:

Eastern's defense is decent but it gives up a lot of yards. Western Illinois is terrible but found a way to claw their way back into their game finally losing by a TD and putting up 468 yards passing and running for 175 yards. SUU had over 300 yards of offense. What I am getting at is that Eastern is susceptible defensively. Eastern hasn't faced a defense like Weber's yet this season, and that includes Montana. Weber should be able to move the ball more effectively than when they played JMU or even State (best defense all season and that includes Utah when we saw them) and Eastern hasn't faced a defense as talented and skilled as Weber. That should give us some hope. Right?

UNLV 0-6
SUU 1-6
Western Illinois 1-6
UNC 2-5
Idaho 2-4
Montana 4-2
DI Opponents record: 10-29
DII Central Washington 4-2

Nothing in the Wildcat post to change my mind. ;) Technically, Weber is 2nd in total yards given up. Eagles are 5th. Stats aren't everything, but they hardly skew in Weber's favor. Won't belabor the obvious statistical disparities on offense or that Eastern is better than middle of the pack defensively or that Weber has had JMU, MSU and UC Davis at home and lost all three. Not clear how Weber is going to generate some offense and stop the most prolific offense in FCS on the road. A couple of fun stats: Weber has turned the ball over twice as much as Eastern and is ninth in red zone defense... No need to cherry pick any stats to make Eag fans feel better about the teams chances in any game because all of them are good

Ok, penalty stats suck

We're better overall, and much better on offense. But they're good enough to beat us if we play crappy. We need to strap it up and get to work, and we'll be fine.

That's bout what I thought. Might add watching them vs MSU the Qb was wearing a bulky knee brace and seemed hampered moving around which may allow pressure to be effective.

So prediction 38-30-38 seems like that's a doable thing.

I would say our measure is keeping them below 20 points. They have an offense that has been dominated by opposing defenses this season. We need to show we’re capable of dominating them as well. FWIW, it seems highly unlikely someone outside of the elite Power 5 teams could hold us to 20 or less if we’re playing well.

Watched most of the UC Davis @ Weber game... Two impressions, Davis isn't all that and a bag of chips and Weber hasn't seen ANYTHING like the Eagle's offense this season. My other observations, if Eastern puts Weber in long 3rd downs, the opportunity to create TO's in the passing game is very good.

So much of the play calling was inexplicable on both sides of the ball for Davis and Weber that I've no idea what those coaches were thinking. Will say that Weber always had 3 defenders around the WR target of the Davis QB. At first I thought hmmm... good defense, than I realized the Davis QB just didn't see the field and other WR's were running open. EB3 should pick this defense apart, especially if the WR's play like they did against Idaho. Eastern will be able to run off tackle too if the WR's clear out.

Weber lacked explosion on defense as their board suggested and Eastern has seen all the blitzes from Montana and Idaho already that Weber might employ. I suppose if Weber thinks a CB can get to EB3, that might be something new. Doubt we'll see that type of suicide defense but desperation is a stinky cologne.

Weber has a lot of pride and expect them to show up ready to play. Love Davis at RB. I suppose this game could be close :? Obviously, I don't think so but I can't read Ena or Shoemaker's minds. If they decide to get "tricky" anything can happen. Yes, this is my prejudice showing. They've earned a little grace, so Bless this team, coaches and fans

Go Eags!

Watching the game agianst MSU and looking at the stats from the JMU game, this team seems to be all over the place. JMU put up 30 plus with 200 passing yards, yet MSU has just about as good of team as JMU and they only put up 13.

I think the insane deapth we have at WR's is going to blow up their defense and the fact that we have RB's that can catch as well.

Even though they are a better defence than Montana. We can throw to everyone and expect a huge play and we can hand it off and expect huge results.

As long as EB3 gets away from preasure we are good. I saw a few plays agianst Idaho were eb3 started to run because of preasure but as soon as the defence backed off to get him he threw it on the run to a now wide open reciver.

Also weber offense does not look like years past. Their QB looked like he couldnt get away from preasure, not very fast. We hit him a few times and we are good. Our defense has been playing the best I have seen in a long time. It might be better than the 2018 frisco team.

I dont think we will put the 600 yards from last week up but we even put up 422 yards on Montana.
