Women's Basketball

Saw on weberhq that Bethann Ord is leaving Weber for Binghamton University in New York. Interesting move, but one that I welcome. Not that I'm a huge fan of women's basketball (not like Tal getting in fights with BYU fans at lady bball games), but Ord has been an enigma for Weber State Sports since her hiring. After a really rocky start, she seemed to settle down a touch and ended up having a couple good seasons. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't she own the best season record for the Lady Cats. Regardless, I wish her luck (Binghamton definitely doesn't have the facilities like Weber) on her new venture.

With this vacancy, I predict that the administration goes after a local coach who understands the area a bit better and can recruit more local players (ultimately saves the department and school money).

I disagree with some of what you are saying. Hiring a local coach will not suddenly change the recruiting dynamic in Utah. It wouldn't mean that all of those players who go to the UUs or YUs would now become Wildcats. Plus, there are not dozens of D1 players coming out of Utah every year; usually just a handful at best. Ord has done an outstanding job in recruiting and has landed some good local talent. I don't think you could ask more of any coach.

I don't have a clue who will be brought in to coach our ladies, but I have a lot of confidence in our Athletic Department and the process they will use to get the next coach.

Onward and upward.

Personally, I have a lot of respect for what coach Ord has done at Weber and I wish her and her family all the best going forward.

The silence coming out of the Athletic Department is deafening. Has anyone heard anything about what is going on since Bethann announced her departure? Who is the acting head coach? When will the search for a new head coach be completed? Who are the most likely candidates? Are all of our players staying? Are all of our signees still committed? Does any body know anything? :wtf:

I'm now wondering if Coach Duft is interested in coaching the women's team? I don't think it is totally out of the realm of possibilities. I think that he could get the position if he wanted it. :coffee:

I know Coach Duft has a high school daughter who is a pretty high-level player on the AAU circuit, so if he wants to coach his daughter in college, it makes sense that he might consider coaching the women's team now. But he is also the head assistant for the men's program, so he might be next in line for the men's job if/when Rahe leaves/retires. Will be interesting to see what develops in the next few weeks/months.

Rumblings are that we will be getting a new coach within the next few days. Sounds like they have had some good candidates. :coffee:

On this month's Ask the AD podcast, AD Bovee said that a decision will be coming next week on the new women's coach. He also said that construction on the North End Zone Project will begin at the end of August, and complete in a year's time. Basketball schedules will be coming out within the next few weeks as well.

Ord 2.0 from what I can tell. Hope that Harris proves me wrong.

At the HS level, as a head coach, she was a consistent 71% winner. That equates to 21 wins a season. That is not easy to do at the HS level. You have to have some good basketball knowledge to do that. Her record is much like Ron A's before he took the job in Alaska. I don't know her or her coaching style yet, but I'm excited to see what she can do. She has some talent in the program, but that talent is young. I'm hoping to see growth from what coach Ord had established. :thumb:
