Would you rather? Gittens/John

Would you rather have one year with Gittens or two years with Cody John?

Earlier this year I would have told you that I was fine with letting Gittens go as a graduate transfer. I think my opinion has changed the last two weeks. I am not sure John develops more than what he is right now. I don't see him as the leader of this team. I am not sure who will step up and be the on floor leader next year. Maybe Baker? Can Chapman be that guy?

I was impressed with how Gittens took Harding under his wing. I saw many times where he was counseling and coaching the young freshman. I kinda wish we could bring Gittens back for leadership and toughness. It may be something that this team really needs.

I would love to see Gittens for another year. We know who Gittens is as a player and person. We either don't know exactly who John is or we have have some duplication of him already.

I agree with Wazzu. Gittens is a far better player. I really wish he was coming back for his senior year. Sad knowing he will finish his career wearing another teams colors. I'm not a John hater. I appreciate his hard work and his devotion to the program. He still has two years to play and could develop. But, to paraphrase baller (another thread), he's reached his ceiling. I just don't see him getting any better. Whereas, I can see Gittens taking his game to another level. He would be a 5th year senior and still has a ways to go to reach his potential. He hasn't peaked. Rahe might need to reevaluate Gittens...

I think we can still expect more improvement from John. He went from a 15% 3 point shooter to a 28% 3 point shooter, still not very good. But I don't see why he won't get his 3 point percentage into the mid-upper 30s next year. He also improved his overall FG % from 37 to 46% and his foul shooting from 60 - 72%.
He lost out at the end because Rahe determined (rightly so) that the lineup was better with Senglin running the point and Harding playing the 2, than with John running the point and Senglin at the 2.

John's assist to TO ratio wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't too bad 74-55. Granted, Cannon's was better, much better (49-17), but Cannon's game doesn't compare to John's in other areas.
I'm optimistic that John will continue to improve and do well at the point next year.

As for the thread and who would I rather, Gittens or John. I'd rather have John next year. Because I think Weber will need someone with experience running the point. Gittens would be a back-up at the 3/4.

Don't get me wrong, though. I like Gittens, and sometimes I think that if he hadn't been hurt Weber would've won the Big Sky regular season and tournament. I just don't think he will bring as much to next year's team as John will.

Gittens has said he will play his senior season somewhere else, but fortunately he said somewhere not in the Big Sky. So really the question for next year is: Harding or John at the point? I don't think Rahe will start one of the new guards knowing who we already have but I like that they're there. I also think that's the reason we can get 2-3 really good guards/forwards every few years because they'll get playing time as freshman and will have time to develop, whereas the big schools offer redshirts.
