WSU and NAU

The lady Viks got a nice pair of wins at home against Weber State and Northern Arizona this week. Home cookin' and the friendly confines of the Stott Center were just what the doctor ordered as we finally got back on track after 4 straight losses. In both games we kept momentum going in the second half, playing good enough defense to not allow our opponents to gain confidence in their ability to come back and make closing runs. Although I would like to see us switch up the defensive schemes more, we had a much better post presence, and I must give credit to all our posts for battling hard under the glass, getting tough rebounds, and winning the "points in the paint" stat (42 - 28 and 32 - 24). Yes, when we can get balanced scoring like this, our whole offense gets in a good rhythm and we become a much harder team to defend. Low post scoring opens things up for our guards to create motion and get good open looks at the basket. It also seems that the coaches had been stressing the importance of pushing the ball up the court in both of these games. We are a much better transition team than a half court team on offense, and we should continue to run when opportunities present themselves. Although we didn't get credit for a lot of fast-break points in either game, our up-tempo play kept our opponents from setting up their defense and contributed to the much improved point production by our post players. When we run and crisply move the ball around on offense, we can score a lot of points, and make up for our lack of height against the top teams in our league. Of course, this type of play might cause an increase in turnovers, but I believe we've got to take that chance if we are to continue our winning ways. I was also impressed with our ability to attack our opponents zone defense in these 2 games. There was better dribble penetration by our guards which set up a range of scoring options, both inside and out. We got better open looks than in previous games, and that is reflected in the balanced scoring totals and increased assists. Overall, it's apparent that our ladies have been practicing hard and working to improve some little deficiencies. I give kudos to all for the great effort in these 2 needed wins! Go Viks!

Hate to point this out, but these were the two worst teams in the league. Let's see how they deal with better players.

Re: Pdxfan,

This team has proven that it has the physical ability to beat better teams than WSU and NAU, as shown by wins over 2 top-25 mid-major schools earlier this season. Confidence has been lacking since the blowout loss at IS and our coach's harsh response to the team. Negative begets negative. If the ladies could get a little positive support and motivation from their coach I think they would respond with more confident, focused, and better play.
