WSU football could face post-season sanctions

Very little new here, except for the details about the APR goals that are written into Mac's new contract. During the Q&A session at the end of the signing party, Mac addressed this issue to a small extent, and I was pretty satisfied with what he had to say. Progress is being made, but not nearly as much as he would like.

Yes but post-season sanctions are a big threat, especially with the team we have. That would suck big time, I don't understand why the meeting is in 10 days, not after the may release of the APR for teams last year.

I didn't think that there was too much to worry about. The team improved a lot this last year especially since there was a mandatory study session every week.

No matter what the NCAA decides,

1. The team should play their hearts out even if they are prohibited from post-season play
2. The team has to stay focused on academics
3. I am proud of the kids and Mac, and I BACK MAC!

A lot of it also depends upon graduation rates. Thankfully, this years team will have a number of guys graduate and also, the GPA for the team was a lot higher Fall Semester. Lets just hope they keep it up this semester. The NCAA doesn't punish teams that are improving and showing improvement. Weber just needs to keep improving their numbers and everything should work out fine.

I find it interesting that this came from the Trib...Two articles in one week.. WOW!!!

A lot of the problems that I have noticed over the years has been with transfers. Mac has been know as a players coach and doing whatever he can to help them out. It's obvious that there are pros and cons with the situation. I can think of at least 10 players who transferred to Weber, played one season and then left the program high and dry. I don't blame Mac for wanting to rescue some of these charity cases but it's pretty obvious it's coming back to bite them. Sure some of it stems from the previous coach but Mac isn't exempt from causing some of the problem. Luckily they are paying a lot closer attention to the players and that has definitely help with the improvement.

But the bottom line is that the players have somehow got to take responsibility for what they do. It just blows my mind that with all the opportunities (Tutors, study hall, Advisors, a computer lab etc...) there are a number of guys who always find a way to not succeed. To me it's pure stupidity to fail class and not take advantage of the free schooling. I don't expect the players to be straight A students but it's pretty obvious that if you go to class and try your best that you'll at least pass. I hope the players can own up and realize what's on the line in reference to academics.

I know a couple of those Sad-Sack knuckleheads who snatch academic defeat from the jaws of victory. I sure hope they get their s#!+ together THIS semester!

Not sure exactly where WSU's APR is right now, but problems with your APR can be a very big deal! You guys sound like you might be going through a little of what Montana State has been through. Coach Mike Kramer had the program rolling along with a couple of conference titles and a few trips to the playoffs. Unfortunately, he was building the program primarily with transfers/dropdowns, most of whom don't give a rat's ass about your program. They play, leave right after the season is over, and never graduate. Combine that with some of the shady characters he was bringing in as well, and the whole thing exploded.

Our APR dropped like a rock. The NCAA looks at a school's APR over a four-year period. Because they look at the most recent four years, it's what's called a "rolling" APR average, since you always have kids coming and going. Near the end of Kramer's tenure, our APR had dropped to levels where the NCAA finally took action. While there were no playoff sanctions, there might as well have been, since the result has been we haven't even sniffed the playoffs the last two years. The NCAA took away scholarships (six) and practice time (2 hours/week). The result of losing scholarships has been huge, as we are not on a level playing field with our conference foes, especially UM in terms of recruiting local Montana talent.

Coach Rob Ash has taken over the last two seasons, and our academic success has improved dramatically. Our team on the field has dipped a little, but at least we have been able to maintain winning seasons. We were still down scholarships for this signing season, and probably lost a couple of key in-state recruits because of it. But we should have most of those back in place in the next year or two if our rolling APR continues to climb. Coach Ash has even petitioned the NCAA to get some or all of the schollies back, on the basis that we are improving rapidly and that this mess was made of a prior coaching staff. No word yet on how that is going, but the NCAA is a pretty strict body, so I am guessing there won't be any leniency.

Good luck with your current situation. It's tough to watch as your football program grows into a fierce competitor, but then falls when your current administration isn't taking care of business when it comes to athletes in the classroom. That being said, I would much rather cheer for a group of young men with high moral standards, that excel in the classroom, and play their guts out on the field than the quick fix of having a winning team comprised of athletes that do not have any respect for the program or the school.

Hmm... not sure I knew MSU actually had a field, let alone level.

Anyway, looks like a great year for us, and the purpled ones seem to be saying they like what they see there, so let's get ready to rumble, again!

You teddy bears are such a cute bunch. Next time you see an intellectual conservation going on, please make sure to bring more than just your dUMb wit.

Looks like the NCAA is going to see how well the teams grades are at the end of this semester and then decide on whether or not Weber will be sanctioned. Its up to them, they hold their destiny in their hands.

Standard and SL Trib both reporting the NCAA granted a conditional waiver request to Weber State, keeping the Wildcats eligible for postseason play in 2009.

Great news. I am hoping that the last game of the regular season in 2009 (Cal Poly @ Weber State) will be a warm up game for the playoffs for both teams. Best of luck to the WSU in 2009.
