Well, so much for my optimism that was shared by many that we would go into Pullman and beat the Cougs. I am not disappointed that we lost (they ARE in the Pac12), but I am really disappointed in how we played. Bad defense (54.7%). Terrible rebounding (47-34). And horrendous offense/shot selection (34.7%). We took THIRTY-NINE 3 pointers!!! This appears to be coach's philosophy, but damn, what team in Division 1 basketball plays that way successfully? The final numbers dont look that bad, but by my count, we made 9 of our 15 3pointers in the final 10 minutes after we were behind by 30 points.
I, for one, am tired of reading and hearing how great it is that we dont make very many turnovers. Of course we arent going to make a turnover if we dont pass the ball, but instead just chuck up a God-awful 23 foot shot with a defensive player close enough to smell our breath. I thought last year Chiv took some of the worst shots I have ever seen, but Crosgile might have him bested in the terrible shot category.
I cant help but wonder if playing this way will have an adverse effect on our ability to recruit any big guys. After all, if I was a good post player, I definitely would not want to play in a system where the guards continually hoist up terrible shots and NEVER pass the ball to the big guys.
Maybe this kind of basketball is fun for some people to watch, and maybe I am "old school", but I have serious doubts that this is a formula for winning basketball in D1. I am retired and love college basketball, and watch a ton of games, and I simply dont see any good teams playing this way.
