WSU game

Well, so much for my optimism that was shared by many that we would go into Pullman and beat the Cougs. I am not disappointed that we lost (they ARE in the Pac12), but I am really disappointed in how we played. Bad defense (54.7%). Terrible rebounding (47-34). And horrendous offense/shot selection (34.7%). We took THIRTY-NINE 3 pointers!!! This appears to be coach's philosophy, but damn, what team in Division 1 basketball plays that way successfully? The final numbers dont look that bad, but by my count, we made 9 of our 15 3pointers in the final 10 minutes after we were behind by 30 points.

I, for one, am tired of reading and hearing how great it is that we dont make very many turnovers. Of course we arent going to make a turnover if we dont pass the ball, but instead just chuck up a God-awful 23 foot shot with a defensive player close enough to smell our breath. I thought last year Chiv took some of the worst shots I have ever seen, but Crosgile might have him bested in the terrible shot category.

I cant help but wonder if playing this way will have an adverse effect on our ability to recruit any big guys. After all, if I was a good post player, I definitely would not want to play in a system where the guards continually hoist up terrible shots and NEVER pass the ball to the big guys.

Maybe this kind of basketball is fun for some people to watch, and maybe I am "old school", but I have serious doubts that this is a formula for winning basketball in D1. I am retired and love college basketball, and watch a ton of games, and I simply dont see any good teams playing this way.

It will take the team a while to find the right balance. Granted, the shooting percentages were terrible :ohno: Not being able to watch the game, it is hard to work out if it was shot selection or whether the shots just didn't go in (that does happen to even the best teams time to time). With so many new players, we will only get better. At least we kept it to 19 points - that is better than last year. I wouldn't give up on the team just yet :) Still expecting good things to come once this team gels

Aussie - I did see the game, and it was definitely shot selection. And this year was WORSE than last year. Dont let the final score decieve you. We were behind by 30+ points with 10mins to go. As I said in my earlier post, we made 9 of our three pointers in the final 10mins when WSU had it on "cruise control" and had subs in the game.

I am certainly not giving up, but it wasnt the start I was hoping for.

Tough game. Love the talent. I think we will compete for Big Sky championship. Our game plan is going to be shoot a bunch of 3's. It is more exciting to watch and we have the firepower. Chiverton hardly played. Just wait until he gets back in the line-up. We will roll then. Plus, I would like to see the Kelly kid get more shots and playing time. In this game we just got off to a bad start.

I watched some of the game and thank goodness I had had a few before hand otherwise I wouldn't have made it as far in the game as I did. Does anyone know how to follow through on their shots? Looked like they were practicing for Track season with shot putting.
Yes the shot selection was horrible.
I am also wondering about our coaches choice of sweater. :-) My wife even commented that it looked like an Eastern version of Charlie Brown outfit :-)

I'm loving the Argyle Sweaters!! Shot selection was bad yes, first real game jitters? Maybe. One or two more passes maybe would have given us a better look. Remember last year the effort that our boys put up was three times the effort that Coach Earlywine got out of them. Hayford is a good coach and will continue to get the extra effort from the team. The Big Sky will never get two teams into the tourney, so we need to be ready for conference play. These early games will be used for team building.

I love the sweaters to. I sure hope you are right about the jitters. It will take time but I think we compete for the Big Sky championship. I respectfully disagree on the effort comment though. The best indicator of effort is defense. On Saturday WSU had our boys down 33 at one point while shooting 55%. We lost by 19. Last year we lost by 26 with WSU shooting 50%. In Earlywines last year we lost by 6 and held WSU to 41%. If we defend we will win a ton of games. We have the scorers without question. Once Chiverton starts getting more playing time we will roll. He is the best recruit that Hayford has brought in and needs to get healthy and play. The Kelly kid from Spokane is another one to watch. It was good to see him play so much.

They love the 3 ball... but man, 39 of them is a ton, with 17 from Crogsile himself. Need some better balance.

Good thing there is all that increased effort, otherwise we give up 50 offensive Rebs and 60 fast break points vs. CSN instead of the 24 offensive Rebs and 29 fast break pts we did! Still think coach gets it turned around and we win the big sky.

I hope the optimism is well-founded. I am skeptical at this point because the only positives I have seen thus far is a good performance by Seifert and the fact that it appears the conference is once again not very good.

The negatives far outweight the positives at this point: a point guard who is a questionable decision maker and takes terrible shots even though he is a 4th year junior with 2 previous years of D1 experience at a higher level (and we dont have a backup PG); our most talented guy is a senior who wont pass, rebound, or guard anybody and also takes horrendous shots; although our team was awful defensively last year and appears worse this year, coach has cut Forbes (our best perimeter defender) minutes; not only do we not offer much resistance defensively, but when the other team does miss, we dont box out.

In adddition to those things, our schedule is really, really tough with all of the road games to begin the season. I hope we dont get buried in a hole too deep to dig out of.

Not smoking yet. It isn't quite legal yet. Coach is good and will get the team ready. He dominated at Whitworth so winning the Big Sky should be easy. We have the talent. All they need is coaching.

I am all for this coach he has a great rep but WOW these two eggs they have laid are painful.
Yes he was successful at Whitworth and yes he doesn't have his "own guys," but it is never EASY to win a league championship whether you are in pony league or the NBA.
My biggest concern is playing "TEAM" basketball. Not a lot of offense/passing going on. I feel like it I am watching the "Guru of Go" - Reference ESPN 30 for 30. If you want that Bo Kimble is still in the area from what I understand let's get him to come in and get that offense going, but I am tired of watching sloppy basketball against crappy teams.

Rant over :pissed:

EWU 98 - great reference to the Bo Kimble/Hank Gathers era at Loyola Marymount with Paul Westhead as the coach. That was probably the last team to successfully play the style of ball that Coach Hayford is currently employing.

Thanks

Yah I thought he was in the area Shoreline . . .

Good news is that these are his own guys. Last year coach won with someone else's guys. Coach picked this team so I have faith he will win his guys like he has before.
