Bryant Eteuati jailed, may not play in crucial conference matchup. By Jessica Schreifels
****UPDATE 4 p.m. October 24, 2008***
Statement from John Kowalewski, campus spokesperson, regarding Bryant Eteuati:

"We have a long standing practice in the Wildcat athletic department with regards to student athlete discipline. Based on that long standing practice and the current circumstances, Bryant Eteuati has been suspended from the football team indefinitely for disciplinary reasons."

***END STATEMENT***

The Weber State University Football Team will be taking on Northern Arizona University in a potential history-making game this Saturday perhaps without their star wide receiver and kick return specialist Bryant Eteuati. Eteuati was arrested on Wednesday evening in Ogden.
Ogden Police Lt. Mike Ashment said Eteuati was pulled over for a minor traffic violation on 26th Street and Harrison Boulevard, where the arresting officer discovered that he not only had no insurance on his 2000 Lexus, but also had three outstanding warrants.

"The officer stopped a 2000 Lexus being driven by Bryant," Ashment said. "He stopped him because there was another officer on a (different) traffic stop, and (Eteuati) failed to go to the other lane."
Once the officer got Eteuati's information, he realized he didn't have insurance on the Lexus, and had warrants for his arrest for communication fraud, aggravated assault, and retail theft.
Ashment said Eteuati was arrested for the warrants, failure to change lanes, and no insurance. He was booked in the Weber County Jail and his vehicle was impounded.
Ashment said the communications fraud charge held bail of $5000. The aggravated assault charge another $5000. The third charge of retail theft had another $300 bail.
According to bookings at the Weber County Jail, Eteuati was still in custody on Thursday night, and could be there at least five days for failure to appear in court on the retail theft charge. He will be meeting with a judge today, who will decide whether the All-American return specialist will serve his five days in jail, or be released.
This means Eteuati could be stuck in jail for the biggest game of the season, and possibly his college career.
For both NAU and WSU, with perfect records in the Big Sky Conference (4-0), Saturday's game will be huge. If the Wildcats do beat the Lumberjacks, it will be the first time in WSU history that the football team has a 5-0 record in the conference.
WSU athletic administration would not comment Thursday evening on whether Eteauti will play in Saturday's game.
"We're not going to deal with this until tomorrow, so nobody will be making any comments," said Brad Larsen, WSU assistant athletic director for media relations.
The Signpost was unable to find any code of conduct for football players relating to consequences for being jailed.
Eteauti led the nation in all-purpose yards last season. He also broke the WSU record and is the current record holder for punts taken and return yards.
If Eteauti does not play in Saturday's game, it is unclear who would replace him as kickoff and punt return specialist.
Eteauti has returned 14 kickoffs and 18 punts this season, the next closest Wildcat is senior cornerback Jon Carraway, with two kick returns and two punt returns this season.

Bummer for Weber State. Even a bigger bummer for Mr. Eteuati.

Punt and kick returners can have a marked influence on the game but the number of touches are minimal in the grand scheme. I'm guessing Weber will miss him at wide receiver more but from what I've seen of the Wildcats, they have enough in the arsenal that this won't slow em down all that much.

Added advantage is minimal for the Lumberjacks as a result of this.

Should still be a close game. Hope whoever wins this takes the Big Sky Conference this year. Respect the Griz but tired of em. I think we can probably be in agreement with that collectively as fan bases?

Go Jacks.

GAME DAY!!!!!!!

Yes I think we can all agree that it is a breath of fresh air without the Griz on top of the big sky. I think today will be a great game, I am hoping that FSN-Utah picks it up otherwise its Bigskytv.org

Go Cats.

On pre-game show Mac said Bryant did not know that there were warrants out for his arrest, that is why he missed the court dates that lead to his arrest. We will see what happens in the upcoming weeks.

Go Cats. Good luck Bryant.

I didn’t really know how to react to this news when it came out late last week. I work with young men in the juvenile justice system, so there’s a part of me that is a little jaded, thinking that with the indefinite suspension, young Mr. Eteuati got what he deserves. When I saw him on the sideline during the game, I was wondering why he was allowed to travel with the team. Then I read today that he did not travel with his teammates, but that his mom drove him down so that he could support his team on his own. To me, that’s pretty impressive. It’s been my experience that most young men in trouble with the law want to hide from their problems, and I see Bryant’s efforts to get his mother to drive to Flagstaff as an indication of some strength of character. Either that, or he really, really, really, really wants a BSC championship ring. What do the rest of you think?

One of my thoughts is that he was not trying to hide from the warrants. The police department in Layton could have found him easily. His name has been in the paper at least once a week the past three seasons. They have known where he was going to be every Saturday in the fall, and every afternoon during the weeks. On campus at practice or at a game. Hello, no effort on their part to serve the warrants. It could have been taken care of at least a year ago.

Both statements are true!

We should thank Mr. Eteuati for his off field contribution to the team. They were very focused last week in practice. It is guaranteed that there are a handful of young players with too much testosterone and too little judgment who think they are "bullet-proof." Those young bucks watched their "careers" flash before their eyes when they saw that even an all-American could be pulled from the team! That event was more impactful than a dozen old farts telling them what to do!

As for Eteuati's future, I believe in redemption, but only after a wrong is made right. Bryant needs to humbly and forthrightly step up and do so. Then and only then he should play as long as he is within the rules.

Do wrong and you are punished. Do right and you are rewarded. What could be a more visible lesson to young knuckleheads? How else do we civilize our young males? To dads, moms, teachers, correctional officers, friends and family everywhere, this is perhaps the most important part of the blessing of the game of football.

Did anyone else notice how it took a routine traffic stop to finally catch Eteuati. This is a guy whose picture and name is in the newspaper every week, yet he has warrants out from a few years back. What does this say about the police we have out there? I'm no expert on law enforcement, but what would have happened if Eteuati hadn't been pulled over? Would he have ever been caught? Seems like our local police are pretty bad at doing their jobs. I'm not sure if it's laziness or incompetency. Probably both.

That being said, I hope things work out for Eteuati. It would be a shame to let a few incidents bring down the rest of his life.

Actually I read somewhere that the warrants were only issued a few weeks ago, like the 6th and 13th of October. I don't know why it took 2 years for the warrants to be issued but that would be a big reason why he was not picked up earlier. I also saw something where his court date is Nov. 3rd and his lawyer thinks they can get everything righted so he can re-join the team. I agree with all the others that he needs to be held responsible for his actions but once he does give him a second chance.

All indications are that Mr. Eteuati is done at Weber State. If I have my facts straight, he will not be reinstated unless the charges are dropped or his is found not guilty. His preliminary hearing isn't until 11 November, so unless the charges are dropped before that, he will certainly miss at least the PSU and ISU games. The hearing on 11 November is where he answers the charges, and if he pleads not guilty and the matters go to trial, the next hearing will not be scheduled for several weeks to months, which will likely keep him out of the EWU game and the playoff games too. Unless I’m missing something, Briant will not suit up as a Wildcat again. This makes me sad. What about the rest of y’all?

I heard that he only has one more charge that he needs to get reduced, and that he will be cleared to play, if everything goes according to plan.

Et's trial is thursday... There is an excellent chance that the charges will be reduced and that he will be reinstated on Friday, thus allowing to play on Sat in the LOLT Arena.

Hopefully we really will find out on Thurs.

I don't care if the charges are not as bad. I've talked with a hand full of Cats' around campus and they said they would kick him off the team. He's still a nice dude, but maybe it's time to just kick him off. I don't know what I'd do if I were Mac.

I think that Mac and WSU have done the right thing, sit tight and let the court determine guilt. None of us know the whole story so we are just speculating with the info we have. WSU will do what they feel is right when he is charged, based on the severity of the crimes. The program is bigger than just one player, with Mac back for 4 more years we have a bright future ahead, with or without Bryant.

I think kicking him of the team would be the worst possible thing they could do. Even if he doesn't play keep him close to the program and help him trough the tough times. Don't get me wrong he should pay for his crimes but nothing good would ever come from giving him the boot.
