WSU vs. UM: Clinch Big Sky Championship

Weber's game on Thursday could result in an outright Big Sky Championship for the Cats. Unfortunately, since the grizz played in Ogden they have been a different team. I don't know if it was the reappearance of the formerly suspended Elgin-Taylor, or if Tinkle is figuring out how to coach? Not to make matters worse for the Cats, the grizz have been playing great on their home court this year. The nice thing going for the Cats is their confidence. The Cats have been exceptional during Big Sky play on the road. Weber has two more road games, this thursday in misoula and on Tuesday March 3 against MSU.

one would assume it would lead to an outright but technically it would be a win to guarantee a share of the title on thurs.

if we win and then lose out we would be co-champs if um won out.

UM is the only undefeated team at home in the big sky. I think they will have a season high crowd for the game.

Finally... the Day of the Big Game is here!!

On another thread it mentioned that PSU might be Weber's biggest rival in the Sky... I thoroughly disagree!! I do think PSU is a definite rival for the Cats, and I love playing them; it gets me soooo fired up. No matter though, I think Montana is the Cats biggest rival right now. For the next couple of seasons, in football as well as basketball, Weber and montana are going to fighting each other for the Conference Crown. Um's basketball team is somewhat similar to Weber's. There team is composed of a number of under-classmen who look to be really promising additions to their program. Granted, Weber's freshmen have proven themselves to be far better right now. UM's has 3 seniors on their team (Hasquet, Elgin-Taylor, and Sharp) who are valuable to their program, however, even though these seniors will definitely be missed next season they are replacable. Montana will bring back their leading scorer in Anthony Johnson who has been on an absolute tear this season averaging close to 22 a game in conference play. They will have guards Michael Taylor, Shawn Stockton (nothing like his uncle, at least lets hope not), Ryan Staudacher, and will be adding a prolific athlete in Will Cherry (ESPN believes he is an 80 recruit: quick and passes well, isn't the best scorer). UM will have a strong group of Big Men: Brian Qvale, the starting center, will only be a JR (he is the pudgy guy that doesn't look like an NCAA athlete), 7' Selvig (hasn't shown anything as of yet, but is only a RFR; he's out for the rest of this season with a foot injury), Jack McGilis who can play the 2 or 3, he is an exceptional 3pt shooter, and will have Mathias Ward as a RFR (Ward was also heavily recruited by Weber State, but chose UM because it was closer to home). Not only that but the grizz will be adding Eric Hutchinson and Thurman Woods. Hutchinson is a mid 80's recruit and will immediately impact the grizz as a C and PF... WARD is probably wondering why he chose UM now. Woods is a high 70s product, but has been compared to UCLA great Charles O'Bannon (how long did he play in the NBA, and what happened to him after college?). The grizz are expecting great things from Woods. The grizz would be loaded with talent and depth and in all likelyhood would be the team most likely standing in the way of Weber State. Weber is losing McCoy and Davis, virtually the heart of this years team, but are adding three "Blue Collar" recruits, and getting Washington with two years of eligibility.

Of course UNC, MSU, ISU, and PSU will have have a lot of their players back next year, and each could compete for the Sky's title. But looking at talent, depth, and recruits, I believe that the battle for the Sky will be between UM and Weber for a few years to come. Of course, I'm frequently wrong, so for ISUSUPERFAN, I also think that ISU will have a great team next season. (OLDSKOOL, I'm know that MSU will be better next season than this season; they are young and have some great talent being developed by a good coach).... UNC and PSU are both going to be great next year. and as long as BALDY is around NAU will be tough. I don't think Sac or Eastern are going to be as competitive as everyone else, but who knows.... I think Katz is a great coach and that Sac will only get better (of course thats the only thing they can do).
